This Charter sets out the terms of thepartnership between Edge Hill University andits students. It summarises what a student canexpect from the University and what isexpected of them in return. It has beendeveloped jointly by the University and theStudents’ Union with oversight from theLearning and Teaching Committee. It coversall students on taught programmes currentlyregistered at the University and is subject toannual review.

Our values

The University and the Students’ Union are committed tohelping you achieve your full potential through theprovision of excellent teaching, learning and supportservices. In turn we expect you to show commitment andwork hard.

The University embraces diversity and we value and usethe positive contributions of all. We expect everyone totreat each other with respect and courtesy and to act in afair, honest, open and independent way, accepting thatwe are all part of one University community.

The University’s promise to you:

We will provide:

1. Professional staff, committed to the quality of your experience and their own development.

2. Well designed, well taught courses, which are informed by up-to-date research.

3. Clear and accurate information on the academic and professional requirements of your course, and the outcomes you are expected to achieve.

4. An integrated induction throughout your first year, to support your transition to University life and academic study.

5. Teaching and learning activities that will challenge andextend your thinking, helping you to develop your personalskills and enhance your employment prospects.

6. Fair assessment of your work and feedback within four working weeks. If there are reasons why this cannot be met, we will tell you and give you a date when it will be available.

7. A Personal Tutor to support you with regular contact and a wide range of personal and learning support services appropriate to your needs.

8. Clear and up-to-date information on timetabling. If your timetable is changed or a class is cancelled, we will tell you in advance wherever possible.

9. High quality learning and social facilities with up-to-date, accessible library and ICT provision.

10. Clearly identified channels of communication for you to raise any queries, suggestions, feedback (positive or negative) or complaints.

11. Clear information on fees and payment methods with specialist advice if you are applying for a loan or other forms of student funding.

12. Policies and procedures to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the Edge Hill community.

We will:

13. Actively seek and listen to your views on all aspects of your University experience and provide you with a timely response.

14. Operate fair and accessible Appeals and Complaints Procedures.

Your responsibility is to:

15. Take ownership of your learning, take your studies seriously and use the information and support provided to plan your studies and your work.

16. Fully engage in your University induction programme.17. Familiarise yourself with your timetable and attend

all timetabled classes promptly.18. Adequately prepare for all timetabled classes and seminars.19. Keep any scheduled sessions, interviews or appointments,

giving appropriate notice if you have to cancel/be absent for any reason.

20.Make sure you are familiar with and comply with all the requirements of your programme of study or esearch and its regulations.

21. Make sure you spend sufficient regular time in independent study and participate fully and responsiblyin all timetabled group learning activities.

22. Hand work in on time to set criteria and deadlines.23. Take notice of the feedback you receive to help you

improve your work and assessments.24. Seek early advice and support whenever you need

clarification on any aspect of your programme, or want to improve your performance, or if you have a problem, be it academic or personal.

25. Make full use of the services and facilities available to support you.

26. Keep us informed of any change of circumstances which may affect your studies.

27. Use the feedback mechanisms to let us know what you think.

28.Make arrangements to pay your tuition fees, accommodation fees and any other expenses relating to your programme or charges for the use of any University services or facilities.

29. Comply with any Edge Hill University safety policies or procedures, respect the campus environment, be respectful of others and behave in an appropriate manner.

Your Students’ Union undertakes to:

30.Actively seek your views in relation to all aspects of yourUniversity experience and be the recognised representative channel between the Student Body and the University and any other external bodies.

31. Promote the interests and welfare of all students at the University through the provision of appropriate representation, support and advice services.

32. Contribute to your personal development through the provision of social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities and forums for discussions and debate.

33. Seek out and take account of your feedback to ensure the Union operates effectively.
