What is Pollution?
Pollution is the contamination of the environment, which damages and spoils it, so
that it is no longer clean, healthy or able to provide the best possible conditions for humans or animals. Most pollution is caused by waste –
products that humans do not want.
Visit the different pictures stationed around the
room.
For each picture explain what is happening and what TYPE of pollution
you think it is.
Connect with previous learning…
Now complete the column relating to the
affects of pollution.
How do you think each of the examples affect the environment and
its inhabitants?
Fly Tipping/Litter
LAND POLLUTIONCan lead to poor growth of crops, loss of
wildlife habitats and other types of pollution such as WATER POLLUTION
Oil spill
WATER POLLUTIONThis includes the contamination of rivers,
lakes and oceans. It affects the waters quality making harmful to both humans
and animals.
Power stations
AIR POLLUTIONAffects the natural balance in the air. Can lead to ACID RAIN. Can cause SMOG. Can
lead to breathing problems in humans and animals.
Scientist believe air pollution causes GLOBAL WARMING.
Toxic Waste
LAND POLLUTIONCan cause huge health problems for
humans and other wildlife. Lowers the soils fertility making it hard to grow food.
Deforestation
LAND POLLUTIONTakes away the earths natural resources
leaving the earth barren.
Electrical waste
WASTE POLLUTIONWaste that cannot be recycled and is not
bio-degradable. It takes up space, spreads disease and releases dangerous
chemicals.
Congestion
AIR POLLUTIONUpsets natural balance of the air.
Contributes to breathing problems such as asthma and is believed to contribute to
the problem of GLOBAL WARMING.
Market Place
Each pair will be assigned a form of pollution and their possible solutions:
• Acid Rain• Human Waste• Eutrophication• Radioactive Pollution
1. Each pair is given information on one form of pollution and their possible solutions. You must convert the information into a poster using no more than 25 words. You may use as many
pictures, symbols, cartoons, sketches, numbers and initial letters as you like.
Instructions
2. One person from each pair stays with the poster and explains what it means to people who come to them.
3. One person from each goes to the other pairs to get the information.
4. Original pairs swap information and ensure the table is complete.
Watch the clip and
think about pollution and its
causes…
Who/what do you think is
responsible for the state the world is in?
Is it… Humanity? The Government? Greed? Selfishness? Businesses? Past generations? Scientists? Young people?
Who’s to Blame?
Q (D) Science and the Government have pollution under control’ (6 marks) i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your point of view (3)ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3)
Complete the question in your lesson template.
Swap with a partner and mark each others work in GREEN PEN
The type of question is (d) and the marks for the question are (6).
REMEMBER to mark each point in the margin – there should be three of each.
