This photo shows coastal management at Hornsea in Yorkshire:

(a) Identify the coastal management feature at A. (1 mark)

Groyne(b) Briefl y describe how coastal management feature

B protects the coastline. (2 marks)Rocks prevent damage to the sea wall by absorbing wave power and trapping beach sand.

Coastal management

Coastalchange

Outline the main advantages and disadvantages of hard engineering methodswhich are used to protect coasts. (6 marks)

Coasts can be managed in different ways to defend them against the sea.

Hard engineeringA traditional approach to protecting coasts involves building structures.

Protects cliffs and buildings

Expensive

Sand reduces wave energy and maintains tourism

Expensive

People and activities avoid erosion by moving inland

Expensive

Reduces slippage

Foot of cliff still needs protection from the waves

Prevents sea removing sand

Exposes other areas of coastline

Rocks absorb wave energy

Expensive

Waves break on reef and lose power

Expensive and may interfere with fi shing

Holistic management or soft engineeringThis approach looks at factors such as tourism, as well as the nature of the rocks and waves.

Part (b) says describe. You need to

develop your answer to get full marks.

Coastal management1 Study Figure 1.

Figure 1: an example of coastal defences on the south coast of England.

Identify the type of coastal defence shown in Figure 1 and briefly describe how it works. (2 marks)

Type of coastal defence:

How it works:

2 For a named location, explain the costs and benefits of using either hard engineering or soft engineering (sustainable) approaches. (6 marks)

Named location: Cromer in Norfolk

Along the north Norfolk Coast around Cromer hard engineering approaches have been used for the last 50 years. A main type of defence is groynes. These are made from expensive hardwood and only have a limited lifespan before they get damaged or disintegrate. However they are very effective at slowing longshore drift and preserving the tourism beaches.

Another type of hard coastal defence is

Read the question carefully. You only need to talk about either hard or sustainable (soft) coastal approaches. To get full marks, you need to write about costs and benefits.
