Trip itinerary, daily highlights / features:
Tuesday, April 24
Enjoy a lovely departure from the interstate highway, north of Charlotte. We’ll drive
through the Uwharrie Mountains – bucolic splendor all around us. Our backroads route will
also take us past historic Quaker meeting houses, and through the pretty town of
Hillsborough.
Overnight at the Hampton Inn, Wake Forest (town, not university), NC.
Wednesday, April 25
Our backroads drive will continue this morning, taking us through Youngsville, Louisburg,
and Medoc Mountain en route to old Halifax – a state historic site.
In the afternoon, we arrive in beautiful Edenton, and the Granville Queen Inn – home for the
next two nights.
Thursday, April 26
Enjoy visits around Edenton, in the nearby village of Hertford, and to the Merchants
Millpond State Park.
Overnight, Edenton.
Friday, April 27
We’ll drive across the Albemarle Sound to explore the netherland of Carolina bay lakes (Lake
Phelps, Alligator Lake, and the biggest of them – Lake Mattamuskeet) and ancient farmland.
We’ll visit the Somerset Place plantation; and the site of the old Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge.
Ferry across the Pamlico Sound (30 minutes) to Aurora; drive to New Bern.
Overnight in the lovely Harmony House Inn.
Saturday, April 28
We’ll enjoy our day in and around New Bern, including a visit to the stately Tryon Palace –
former colonial governor’s residence; and a scenic drive to the fishing hamlet of Oriental.
Overnight, New Bern.
Sunday, April 29
We’ll enjoy our drive home, via the SC Pee Dee region. We’ll take breaks as needed,
including lunch, and a short visit to Pearl Fryar’s topiary garden (just off the interstate).
