In the end of 1990-ies, within the electric propulsion business, it were several problems on gensets, particularly on high speed gensets. The yellow diesel engines were also hurts, but the other colors of diesel engines as well, have had even more challenges. It look likes that the high speed engine including the base frame was not able in a long period to be loaded at rated load. Identical own frequencies created resonances, which Broken bolts on diesel engines, i.e. manifolds and flywheel housing Damaged bearings on generators Fatigue fracture on the common base frame This vibration challenges caused some modification on the generators on site. I.e. angle iron needed to be welded on the bearing flanges of the generators to move the own frequencies, to avoid resonances. In addition we had a challenge by smaller high speed gensets to stabilize the voltage out of the generators. Generators with a low moment of inertia caused this problem and gave challenges towards fluctuation of electric reactive power between the geneators. In year 2000 we started an project to investigate how we could vary the speed of the connected diesel engines according to the power or load requirements onboard. Simple adjust the speed on the diesel engine according the power requirement. As we didn`t either wait with our car at the traffic light to get green, with full throttle of the engine under the bonnet. When a ferry is connected to the landing point, why shouldn`t a solution be developed where the speed of the diesel engines where reduced, and maybe close to the idle speed. This concept has another dimension in controlling, as the we have introduced the speed of the diesel engine as a variable. We have several dynamic systems which have to be synchronized and controlled: Propulsion is influenced from the sea Speed of the propulsion motors is changing due to the requirement in thrust and waves Important to secure a stable constant power outtake from the power station The power station will reduce the speed of the diesel engines individually depending of the power required The control system need also to make sure that the power station is able to connect an larger consumer or the Energy Management system will increase the speed of the diesel engine before consumer is connected, to make sure that power is available. It`s important to handle these variables in one system
