Wheeled Trash Cart Collection InformationOne of the most important rules to remember is to allow enough room around each cart so the collection vehicle can empty each cart. Make sure to allow at least three feet (3’) around each side of the cart and make sure there are no low hanging tree limbs, branches or shrubs overhead. Make sure that there are no fire hydrants, mailboxes, utility poles, or other carts within three feet (3’) of each cart.

To ensure proper collection, residents should make sure that the carts are not overflowing with trash and the arrows on the lid face towards the street. Improper setout of the trash cart could result in missed trash. As always, make sure that all trash, recycling and bulk items are curbside by 6:00 AM on the day of your collection, regardless of what time the collection vehicles typically make it down your street.

Overflow Trash BagsOn occasion, residents may have extra trash that cannot fit inside the wheeled trash cart. In such cases, residents can acquire City of Haverhill overflow trash bags which residents can fill with additional trash and set out next to their trash cart on trash day. There is no limit to the amount of overflow bags you can place curbside. No appointment or scheduling needed. City of Haverhill Overflow Trash Bags are sold in a roll of five (5) bags for $7.50, and can be purchased at any of the following locations:

Haverhill’s recycling program reaches new heights: Record percentage of recyclable materials diverted from trashSince the launch of the Haverhill’s wheeled trash cart program in May 2016, the city’s trash tonnage has decreased an average of 18 percent, while recycling tonnage has increased 25 percent over the same time period, from May through October. The Recycling Diversion Rate (the percentage of recyclables actually diverted from trash) has climbed to a record high of 24 percent! We all share in this success, and together we can achieve even greater heights!

Inside this GuideLearn about the ways we can all work together to further improve our city’s recycling efforts, both through curbside pick-up and through the many disposal options available at Haverhill’s Recycling & Compost Center.
