Ecotoxicology is essential for evaluating the effects of industrial processes on the environment. It combines the disciplines of ecology, toxicology, biology and chemistry to study the effects of pollutants and chemicals on organisms and extrapolate immediate effects to populations and ecosystems.

OVERVIEW

Through our multi-disciplinary Ecotoxicology and Product Testing laboratories, Bureau Veritas offers ecotoxicology, eco-fate and physico-chemical testing, including:

• Permit Toxicity Testing

• GLP Testing – testing of chemicals in accordance with OECD GLP principles, often performed to support regulatory functions (e.g., product registration under REACH)

• Freshwater and Marine Toxicity Testing

• Sediment Toxicity Testing

• TRE/TIE/TTE - Toxicity Reduction Evaluations, Toxicity Identification Evaluations, Toxicity Treatment Evaluations of Toxic Effluents

• Specialized Testing

HOW CAN BUREAU VERITAS HELP YOU?

Our services range from permit bioassays and related toxicology testing to customized experimental design and interpretative toxicology reporting. These include R&D, method development and validation, method optimization, product characterization, testing and analysis. We also specialize in working with “difficult” chemicals, such as poorly water soluble, reactive, or volatile compounds.

Bureau Veritas is committed to providing our customers with accurate and defensible data of the highest quality, together with service that exceeds expectations.

SERVICES

Acute and Sublethal Toxicity

Acute and sublethal toxicity testing in marine and freshwater supports effluent discharge compliance and environmental effects monitoring programs. Tests are conducted in accordance with applicable Environment Canada, US EPA, and OECD/OCSPP methods.

Bureau Veritas has been providing ecotoxicity testing for more than 30 years. We routinely test more than 25 species of bacteria, algae, plants, invertebrates and fish.

Our expertise is called on by universities, at seminars and at international conferences. We have also provided a number of focused presentations and short courses to various industry groups, government, and academic institutions.

Bureau Veritas is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation Inc. (CALA).The SCC has also granted Bureau Veritas Laboratories OECD Good Laboratory Practices recognition, which includes:

• Analytical testing (product preliminary analysis, residue and/or environmental)

• Environmental toxicity studies on aquatic and terrestrial organisms

• Physical-chemical testing

TIE/TRE

Toxicity Identification Evaluation is a site-specific study to isolate, identify and confirm the causative agents of toxicity in an effluent or sediment. Bureau Veritas’ TIE is based on procedures promulgated by the US EPA. Toxicity Reduction Evaluation identifies toxic components that may be removed or reduced in an industrial effluent. Typically, TIE is completed before TRE is initiated.

Freshwater and Marine Sediments

Bureau Veritas has extensive experience testing sediments from contaminated sites and dredged sediments slated for disposal at sea or for bioaccumulation potential. Routine methods for assessing the toxicity of sediment-associated contaminants include:

• 10-d Chironomous dilutus Survival and Growth

• 14-d Hyalella azteca Survival and Growth

• 10-d Marine Amphipod Survival

• Echinoid or Bivalve Larval Development

• Solid Phase Microtox™

• 20-d Neanthes arenaceodentata Survival and Growth

• 28-d Leptocheirus plumulosus Survival, Growth and Reproduction

CHEMICAL PRODUCT TESTING

Acute and sublethal aquatic toxicity, biodegradation, environmental fate and physico-chemical testing support registration of chemical products with Environment Canada, Health Canada, US EPA, ECHA, IMO and OSPAR. We also offer chemical product testing to comply with eco-labelling programs including EcoLogo™ and Green Seal®.

We are experts in multiple test exposure formats, from static setups to fully customized flow-through dilution systems.
