The long time to endure the "brown cloud“ that was produced in the steel industryalready ended in Peine in 1964 with the opening of the new basic oxygensteelmaking. In 1996, the ultra-modern electro steel mill was introduced andsecured the future of the „Peiner Träger". Already in 1798 a restaurant with a brewery started ist business that has beendeveloped since 1890 by the family Härke into a modern company. The Härke beer specialties gained an excellent reputation and are among the top products of theGerman brewery tradition. In the center of the town the old building of thebrewery is now an industrial heritage in which beer is still brewed.

Due to its proximity to the VW factories in Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Hannover andSalzgitter many other companies of the automotive supplier industry as Benoac, Aksys, Rüttgers or Faurecia have settled down in Peine.
