Greetings fellow Plastic fans. Spring is upon us. We've had our first two shows of the year and my beloved Padres haven't yet been mathematically eliminated from the playioff picture. I haven't heard an After Action Report from Southern Maine on how DowneastCon 2010 went. I did however, attend ValleyCon last weekend for their 2oth Anniversary Show. There were a bunch of great pieces on the tables and even more heartening was the vendor room. The room was full and busy all day. That bodes well for our hobby. These early spring shows are a great way to re-connect with the hobby after the long cold winter. I spent the day chatting with folks I hadn't seen since last fall. My Thanks and Congratulations to Al LaFleche and his guys for a great day and fine show... oh and Happy Anniversary. This coming weekend, for those of us in the Southern part of the Region, our bretheren to the south - IPMS NJ in Region 2 are hosting their annual show, "MosquitoCon". I usually see a bunch of folks from Long Island, CT and NY at this one. It's always a great show and a good time. Remember, our Regional - NOREEASTCON is a scant 30 days away head to the LISMS Website http://www.lisms.org and check out their show plans. I know they need Trophy support so if you can sponsor a category. The trophy sponsorship page is also the vendor form as well. Untill next time, Happy Modeling, Doc

IPMS Region 1 Update

News From Battleship Coveby Joe McDonald Sr.

The Board of Directors at Battleship Cove finally selected a new director to replace retiring Captain Jack Casey. They selected Brad King presently Director of the British crusier museum, H.M.S. Belfast. He has been in senior management of the Imperial War Museum with 29 years of experience as a museum professional. We wish him success and hopefully he will be as supported of our efforts as the past five CEO's have been.

In another vein, Kevin La France who has been feeding folks aboard the "Big Mamie" for the past decade has left to retire in Florida. His replacement is Stephanie Morse, a long time cafeteria employee. Big step and gamble in present circumstances. We wish her success.

Kit Review - Russian Train Artillery by Joe McDonald Sr.

About 3 years ago I bought an ICM or Zevda kit that contained a Gaz Jeep, a caisson and an artillery piece.

When I saw a Russian train of artillery by ICM I thought I'd do another one, Wow! Different! This one has an artillery piece (a different more detailed one) (with a crew of three); a caisson (a different more detailed one with a driver); and motive power (a different one - no jeep - two horses this time). Nice moldings, nice idea and they make a nice vignette.

Tamiya 1/48th FW-190D-9 Hal Marshman Sr I am aware this kit has been around for several years, but this is the first time I've completed one, so I thought folks might like to know my opinion of the kit. I've included some pics, so you might judge for yourself. The kit is typically Tamiya, in that the moldings are nice and crisp, dimple and press marks free. Cast in light gray plastic, Tamiya provides you with engraved panel detail, sufficiently deep for your enhancement techniques to take effect. The clear parts are crystal clear, devoid of blemishes, and thin enough to look right, but not so much as to be fragile. A drop tank is provided as the only ordinance. Two sets of cooling gills are providing, so that you can display them either open or closed. The decal sheet is adequate, and provides markings for 2 different planes. I might mention that this kit was developed from their earlier FW-190F-8, and as such includes a few extraneous parts, such as a radial engine front. Tamiya's kit isn't perfect, as it provides a fully walled gear well, but the original well was opened at the inner front, exposing some of the engine bottom to view from the outside. It has been said that the gear legs are not sufficiently long enough and I agree, they just do not look right. Might be another 1/16th inch could make the difference. All this having been said, the kit goes together exceptionally well, with no filling required. For my build, I added scratch built seat belts and buckles, brake lines, and

the dorsal antenna beneath the rear fuselage. My cannon are vinyl covered paper clips, while the navigation lights are MV model train lenses. I use 2lb test monofilament fishing line for my antenna cables. In this case, I've ldeliberately left the cable slack. All blown hood FW-190 variants lacked the built in tensioner, so when the canopy was slid back, the cable would sag.

How about the finish I applied. Well, all paints are Model Master Enamels, RLM numbers 63,76, 75, 82 (bottled as 83), and 81, plus non buffable aluminum. I added a smidgeon of red to the 81 to add to the violet tint, and a touch of 82 to the 76 for the "84" (not a proven RLM color, but used in sufficient amounts that modelers have given it a spurious RLM number, I suppose for identification purposes.) I found a piece of artwork on the net of this scheme, and found it so attractive I had to reproduce it.The airplane is purported to be that of Lt. Theo Nibel of Jg-54, during Operation Bodenplat, 01 Jan, 45. Nibel's Focke was brought down while strafing at low level, by a partridge strike in the radiator. I did the fuselage and fin with the "84", the rudder in 76 mottled with 75. Upper wing surfaces are 63 with disruptive bands of 75. The fuselage upper decking is 82 and 81, with mottling of both on fuselage sides and fin. What about the bottom? I must admit that here I am extemporising, not actually knowing what the real undersides looked like. What I've done is applied an "educated guess", knowing that many langnasen in the last few months of the war were done just so. Leading edges 75, main panel unpainted aluminum, wing caps, gear covers, and control surfaces in 76. Now you may ask, "Why would an airplane be such a mishmash of uncoordinated colors?" Simply put, by late 1944, allied bombing had forced the building halls underground, into tunnels, and such. All supplies, including paints, were in very short supply, and the ground transportation system was hectic at best. Many sub assemblies were being made in barns and garages by unskilled labor, who

might not have access to the latest paints, and were working with crude equipment. The wonder is, how under such dire circumstances, were the Germans able to produce so many machines? In any event, here's my version of Tamiya's 1/48th scale FW-190D-9, hope you like it. have fun, Hal Sr

The President's ColumnWell, let’s see here. It would appear that the Spring show season is off and running and in a big way. A number of members went to Maine in March, bringing home some serious hardware. Other members turned up at MASSCAR the next day. The following weekend the troops were off to Springfield for the Wings and Wheels event, again bring home their just rewards. From the reports I’ve heard and some first hand info I gathered, it would appear that people have been doing some serious building over the winter. You can see some photos from the shows on the club web site, IPMSBayColony.com , go to the Forum and you will find them posted there or you will find links to other sites where the photos are posted. (Thanks guys for those posts and pictures.)

Next up is NoreastCon down on Long Island. This is a great venue for a model contest, right in an Aircraft Museum on the old Republic Field. The banquet will be held at the 56th Fighter Squadron restaurant. For more info contact Robert DeMaio at [email protected] .

June 3rd thru June 5th, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Harry’s Hobbies will be having their annual sale. I bring this up so

you can’t say you weren’t warned, but mostly because they have offered us a table for Saturday June 5th. The object being that we man the table for the day. The table will be outside but sheltered. We can display built models, answer questions, recruit members, work on a project, etc., whatever, as long as we are there. MASSCAR did it last year and have been invited back. You don’t have to be there all day but if you could bring something to display and be there for an hour or more please let me know. I think Harry said they would supply coffee and donuts! (And yes we can display on Friday also if we have the volunteers.)

If you win an item at the meeting I am requesting that you write a review of the item and forward it to Bob for the newsletter. If it’s a kit, do an ‘in-box’ review. Tell us what you find in the box. How many sprues of parts and what color they are molded in, is there any flash, etc. Give us your general opinion of the kit. A review can be negative, but if it is tell us what you found wrong. Please just don’t tell us ‘this kit sucks’ without some explanation. If you wish to use a scale, such as a 1 to 10, please tell us what those extremes represent. If you get a tool, try it out first. Tell us what you used it for and on what materials and how it worked.

Back around the beginning of the month I stumbled on to an article on the internet I thought would be of interest to some of you, especially those that are gearing up to compete in the Bob Zoglio challenge. The article was rather long so I am condensing it to fit within this column. Evidently it became tradition in the Japanese Army Air Force, for the higher ranking officers, officers from Samurai families, and those that have proven themselves to name their planes. This name would normally be related to the squadron or the squadron emblem and was painted in kanji characters on the bottom of the rudder. These same officers would name the other planes flown by the junior officers and enlisted pilots.

From The Bridge

When posted to his first squadron Flying Officer Toyoda was assigned to a Ki-43 named, liberally translated as, ‘flaming rectum’. Toyoda flew this plane on many missions and also some of the other aircraft in the squadron when it wasn’t available. Toyoda credits this plane with saving his life on a couple occasions when the throttle jammed in the full military power position. When the plane became war-weary and was assigned to the spare parts bin he was given a new aircraft and because of his demonstrated flying skills was allowed to name it. He gave it the name ‘flaming rectum’.

After the war Toyoda started a manufacturing company and with the aid of some reconstruction loans began to build automobiles. He developed a stylized version of one of the two kanji characters from the name ‘flaming rectum’ into his automotive division logo. Today that stylized logo is applied to the nose and rear end of all the cars built by the company he began.

For those that are not going to Noreastcon we will be having a ‘hobby shop run’ on Saturday May 1st. We will meet in Harry’s Hobby parking lot for a 10:00 am departure. We will visit an art supply store I think you will enjoy, the Hobby Bunker and Spare Time Shop. Possibly we will ad another stop or two depending on weather and traffic conditions that day. Please let me know if you are interested. That will give us a head count. We will be carpooling so I need to know if you are willing to drive and how many you can carry. Those of you that are planning to go as a passenger be prepared to kick in with some gas money. There will be co-pilot duties for those that call shotgun. I will prepare maps and addresses of the destinations

for each car. If there are any members that live closer to Boston and don’t want to drive to Harry’s, it may be possible to meet us in-route.

Before you know it summer will be here. You may be thinking about places to visit or possibly you are looking for some building ideas. We live in a history rich area. King Philip’s War, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War were fought in this area. Saratoga, Concord and Lexington, Bennington, Bunker Hill, Dorchester Heights, and Fort Ticonderoga are all within driving distance. We had airships at Squantum, Naval Air Stations at Quonset Point, South Weymouth and Brunswick. Commonwealth pilots trained on the Corsair at Brunswick. Battleship Cove, navy ships at Newport, subs at New London. Shipbuilding at Portsmouth, NH, Fore River and Charlestown, not to mention the wooden ships from Salem, Essex, and numerous other locations along our coast. Westover and Bedford, F-86’s at Logan. Forts in Boston harbor, Portland Harbor and Newport. It’s an almost endless list of history and monuments to it.

Just a reminder, I carry a plastic file box to each meeting. This contains the club lending library. There are some books for reading but it’s mostly Kalmbach and Osprey modeling books on numerous subjects. Members can borrow these, just sign them out. They cover aircraft, armor, ships, auto, figures and Sci-fi modeleing.

We are now in the 2009 – 2010 membership year, our 41st year. Have you renewed your membership? The membership fee is still only $10 per year. The family membership plan is still available. If you would like to pay a couple years in advance we can handle that. Mail your payments to me or see me at a meeting, checks to be made payable to Bay Colony Historic Modelers.

Just stumbled on a Squadron Flyer from Feb. 1992. There’s been a lot of discussion on high kit prices as of late. So let me give you some of the highlights from this flyer.

New from Tauro, a 1/48 Macchi MC.205 for $27.95, Italeri KC-130 ‘Fat Albert’, list of $33 on sale for $19.99, Hasegawa 1/72 F-4E Thunderbird, $25.00, Hasegawa 1/48 New F/A-18 lists at $78, Monogram’s 1/48 P-61 Black Widow is back in stock for $11. There are a bunch of 1/700 Japanese destroyer kits on sale for $2.99 each, and the Matchbox Flower Class Corvette is on sale for $99.99. The Gunze Sangyo High Tech 1/35 Jagdpanther is back in stock at $110, and Tamiya’s 1/35 Patton M60A3 is on sale for $25.99, down from $37.98 . Looks like some of the prices are already up.
