• In the past century, 90% of the Cheetah population has disappeared
• There is currently only 12,400 cheetahs left in the world.
• Cheetahs used to dominate many large parts of Asia, but today, cheetahs are nearly
extinct in Asia.
Reasons why the cheetah is endangered
• Many cheetah cubs have not been reaching adult age because they have been preyed on by other carnivores. (i.e.: lions and hyenas)• Farmers kill them for attacking their
livestock.• Cheetahs are main target or poaching (illegal
hunting)• Their fur is used in coats and such, and can
be very valuable.
Reasons why the cheetah is
endangered
• Habitat of the cheetah (open lands), is being taken away by humans
• There is only one type of cheetah left. Originally there were 5 types, but four
out of these five are now extinct.• Humans have killed off the small
antelope that the cheetah usually hunts for food.
Reasons why the cheetah is
endangered
What is being done about the endangerment of cheetahs?
• There are special breeding programs to help to keep the cheetahs continue to repopulate• There are wildlife reserves where cheetahs
roam• Livestock farmers are being educated about
how to prevent cheetahs from preying on their livestock
What is being done about the endangerment of cheetahs?• There are anti-poaching laws in many countries across the world where cheetah
population is normally high.• News and media share numbers and
information regarding the cheetah population to keep the world up to date on
their condition.
What is being done about the endangerment of cheetahs?
• Certain lands are preserved for cheetahs so that humans cannot take
them over.
What can an individual do to help prevent the
extinction of cheetahs?
• Donate to non-profit organizations for cheetahs• Donate to charities that help endangered
animals• Work at a zoo, where cheetahs may live and
help them to begin to re-populate
What can an individual do to help prevent the extinction of
cheetahs?• Kids learn about endangered animals in school• Some kids do projects and presentations on
endangered animals and cheetah for school. • Watch the new and learn about the progress of
the efforts• Volunteer at reservations that hold cheetahs
and other endangered animals
