Overview

ECO Singa pore is organising a n ECO Living Programme fo r b loc ks 1 to 8

at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone ‘B’

Reside nts’ Co mmittee (RC) with vo luntee rs from Sta rbuc ks.

ECO Living Prog ramme is a c om munity g rassroo ts p rog ramme tha t a ims

to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit

for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste

audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for

improvement. It would be a yearlong programme that will continuously

engage residents and encourage them to make a commitment to

change.

A training session was conducted for volunteers to prepare them for the

first energy a ud it on 23rd April.

Overview of training for Energy Aud it 1

Energy Audit 1 will be the first audit conducted for the residents who

signed up fo r the ELP during the buzz sessions.

Training session fo r Energy Aud it 1 was cond uc ted ove r 2 sessions: 11am-

12.30pm , 1pm-2.30pm .

The session w as b roken into three ma in parts:

1. Presentation

2. Role p laying o f ap proac h3. Debriefing and add ressing outstanding queries

In to ta l, 41 Sta rbuc ks volunteers a ttend ed the t ra ining c ond uc ted by

ECO Singa pore.

Deta ils of training for Energy Audit 1

We gave a short overview of the purpose

and proc ed ure o f ELP for the benefit o f

the first-time vo lunteers.

Then, we exp la ined how an energy audit

requires more than just looking at the

utilities bill and is actually a process of

fac ilita ting c hange in the c lient. To do so,

we need to create a vision for them to

see and give concrete steps they can

take towards that vision. We would also

need to overcome their resistance to

change.

The vo lunteers we re then taught how to estima te the

energy usage of air-cons, fans and refrigerators, as well

as g ive spec ific t ips to red uc e this usage.

The vo lunteers a lso had the chanc e to familiarise themselves with the

operational procedure and the forms they would be using for the

ac tual day.

Finally, some of the volunteers role-played various scenarios and

everyone had a c hanc e to c omment and suggest imp rovements.

Feedback / Area o f Imp rovement

The time a lloc a ted for the training was too short to suffic ient ly prep a re

the vo lunte ers. In future, tra ining sessions should be 2 hours long. The

volunteers should also be given a set of the forms to be filled and an

example of utilities b ill, in orde r to familiarise themselves bet te r.
