What is Ecolabel?Environmental performance certificationVoluntary method of environmental performance certification and labellingIndentifies products that meet specific environmental criteriaAn impartial third party identifies the criteria and verifies and adherences and awards ecolabelsBased on environmental policy tool known as life cycle assessment (LCA)

Origins Growing global concern for environmental protection on part of governments, businessesBiz recognized Envt.concernsFound advantages in special products involving environmental declarationsGained attraction of customersMore Biz made claims and Greenwash began Concern for Credibility amongst customers 1994, Enter GEN; 2 Decades, 27 Organizations across the globe

ObjectivesEncouraging environmentally sound innovation and leadershipBuilding consumer awareness on environmental issuesProtecting the environment

BenefitsEnvironmental Benefits Substitution for environmentally preferable materials

Industrial Benefits Valuable tool to communicate environmental benefits of a product

Consumer Benefits Guidance in decision- making when buying a product or service

Governmental Benefits Provides an effective and easy to use tool for procurement programs

Types of Eco LabelsType I: Voluntary, multiple-criteria based 3rd party program that awards a license that authorizes environmental labels on products indicating overall environmental preferability

Type II: informative environmentalself-declarationclaims

Type III: voluntary programs that provide quantified environmental data of a product, underpre-set categoriesof parameters set by a qualified third party and based on life cycle assessment

1. Ecomark: A government operated seal of approval program for environmentally preferable consumer products. To increase consumer awareness, the Government of India launched the eco-labelling scheme known as `Ecomark' in 1991 for easy identification of environment-friendly products.

2. The UPS Carbon Neutral shipping label indicates that UPS customers have offset the climate impact of the GHG emissions produced by the transportation of that shipment. UPS calculates the emissions and purchases carbon offset credits equivalent to the GHG emissions created in shipping the package to make it "carbon neutral".

3. This label estimates how much energy the appliance uses, compares energy use of similar products, and lists approximate annual operating costs. Appliances that meet strict energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are eligible for the blueEnergy Starlabel.

4. The agency's function is to develop programs which will increase the conservation and efficient use of energy in India.12

Case Studies

With the new European Eco Design Directive the objective is the integration of environmental aspects into the product design with the aim of improving the environmental performance of the product throughout its whole life cycle. Air conditioners have been identified as energy related products (ERP) because they have an impact on energy consumption during use. Therefore a new set of rules for energy efficiency measurements and specifications have been identified which will be integrated in the new energy efficiency label. The new legislation came into effect in January 2013 and Toshiba products will comply fully with all requirements under Lot 10 or alternatively Lot 11 where required, please see our dedicated website Web:http://ecodesign.toshiba-airconditioning.eu/en/
