THE PRESIDENT ’S COLUMN :
DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
We ended 2014 with the loss of two more members, Alice Jeppesen and Larry Spuur. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of members we lost last year.
The Christmas party was well attended and thanks to Jim Vanderplaat for sharing his Christmas collection.
Let’s all look forward to the coming, great collecting year. I have lots to learn and thank you in advance for your help and patience. It would help me greatly if members would wear name tags to the meetings to help bring me up to speed.
I would like to hear more about the Library programs and see the Springfield program start up again. Signup sheets will be available.
Young people are the future of our hobby. I became a collector at age eight. My mom was a collector and talked to me about the history of people on the stamps. Like most, I tucked everything away during the busy family years, although I always had a box to put all the stamps away that came on the mail. Retirement brought time and a re-newed interest not only in the U.S. but all the countries of the world.
After a move to Oregon from Montana, I found the Eugene Stamp Club and many new friends. Hope to see you at the meetings!
Welcome to 2015! With the election in November, and the installa-tion of officers in December, we’re ready to go! Jim Jackson did a fantastic job last year supplying articles, and I hope he continues this
year! (And I remind EVERYONE, they are free to submit articles on any philatelic re-lated subject.) In order to provide a large enough picture for the final exam in Jim’s Shipka Pass article, it will conclude next month!

THE BULGARIAN BATTLE OF SHIPKA PASS ISSUE (PART II)

One reason the Shipka Pass N. Imperato forgeries are ubiquitous in collections is that they are quite good! Careful examination is re-quired to separate them out.
But there are differences. Arrows point to the distin-guishing features. The per-forations for the genuine are 11½, but I measured the forgeries closer to 11¼.
Three “signs” are pointed out by Varro E. Tyler (Focus on Forgeries ©2000), and I found four additional “signs.” (For those not able to see color with this publi-cation, I will also describe
the location of the arrow in relation to the stamp.)
Red arrow “a” sign (top of stamp)
Black arrow: “Rifle” sign (upper left on stamp)
Yellow arrow: “P” sign (center left on stamp)
Orange Arrow: “hand” sign (lower left on stamp)
Green arrow: “2” sign (uppermost upper right on stamp)
Blue arrow: “scrollwork” sign (center-upper right on stamp)
Fuchsia arrow: “H” sign (lowermost-upper right on stamp)
For the following close-up scans, refer to the color arrows above to find the location of the sign.
Genuine:
•“a” sign (red arrow), the upper portion of the fifth character from the left in the horizontal inscription looks like an “a”. The top of the “a” is flat. (V. Tyler)

This article will conclude in the next issue of the Echoes with your final exam! You will be supplied with a large scan of Bulgaria 1902 Scott 71, 10s blue green. Examine it closely and see how many signs you can discern. Once you have identified the genuine and the forged stamp, you will be ready to check your own collection!!
