Carnival timeas Rio kicksoff toaSambabeatserious business – it’s ahugely important model to thefast-growing company.

Back in the day this was thecar that set Kia on its path torecognition in the UK byoffering value-consciousbuyers a shedload of metal fortheir money.

But the goalposts havechanged, and launches likethe Venga, Sorento, Sportageand new generation Picantohave underpinned themarque’s status as amanufacturer of qualityrather than budget-buyvehicles. And they all nowinclude a seven-year warranty.

Fortunes have movedswiftly for Kia in the fouryears since the company set agoal to become a worldwidetop ten volume player.

Having achieved thatposition the vision is to shakeup the top five and, withsuperminis representing onein four of all new car sales inthe UK and set to dominatethe European market evenmore too, there’s genuine

scope for growth.Rio is the car Kia believes

will, more than any other,help deliver that aspiration -hence the decision to add athree-door model early nextyear.

The confidence iswell-founded because this car,which will cost from £10,595,has much to recommend it.Like its eye-catchingstablemates, the Rio has beendesigned under the scrutiny ofdesign guru Peter Schreyer.

Dynamic and sporty, thesupermini is longer, widerand lower than the model itreplaces, with a coupe-likeroofline and freshinterpretation of the familytiger nose grille.

And even though it offersmore passenger space thanthe previous Rio, it is noheavier despite extra size andhigher spec.

Careful weight managementalso plays its part in one of therange’s most importantmodels, a version which

boasts a mere 85g/km ofemissions and 88.3mpg fueleconomy, better than anycurrent internal combustionengine on the marketincluding hybrids and ecospecials.

This 1.1-litre diesel is one offour power units that will beavailable in the Rio fromlaunch or soon after. Thereare 1.25 and 1.4-litre petrolengines, with a 1.4-litre

turbodiesel to follow.They offer power outputs of

74 to 107bhp and the 1.4 petrolwill also be available with anauto gearbox while all thediesels feature Kia’sEcoDynamics package offuel-saving andemissions-reducing measureslike Intelligent Stop & Go.

No examples of the 85g/kmmodel were available to driveat the Rio launch event –

because they haven’t beenbuilt yet – but using the 1.4petrol version as a yardsticksuggests current Kia fans andpeople downsizing from largercars won’t be disappointed.

A 250-mile route taking infour major motorways, a minitour of the Cotswolds and asubstantial amount of urbandriving revealed the Rio to bea well-refined car of balance,poise, comfort and stability athigh speed, if not one of greatacceleration.

The four trim grades arenamed 1, 1 Air, 2 and 3, allwell kitted out so there is noneed for expensive options.

Even entry level featuresthe likes of daytime runninglights, body-colouredbumpers, headlamp levelling,front electric windows, heightadjustable driver’s seat, tripcomputer and MP3-compatiblesound system, while 1 Airadds air-con.

NewLexus super saloonhas the Tardis factor

T’S the car Lexus believes will herald anew chapter in the company’s history,and it has just been unveiled atCalifornia’s upmarket Pebble Beach.The new GS super saloon will reach

British shores next year with the promise ofa more engaging driving experience, bolderdesign and a more spacious, contemporaryinterior.

Models heading in our direction have beenconfirmed as the GS 450h full hybrid and GS250 petrol-engined derivatives, though moredetailed information will not be released fora few more months.

Confidence looks to be the theme for thisnew generation GS, which faces off with abold spindle grille that is set to become asignature feature of future Lexus models.

And the engineering team has also drawnon the Tardis factor by increasing cabin andboot space, yet leaving the exteriordimensions virtually unchanged.

But their main objective was to provide amore engaging driving experience, so the carhas a new aerodynamic body, wider stanceand stiffer structure along with a quickershifting transmission plus distinctive enginesound and exhaust note.

The revised platform is more rigid than thecurrent model and the track - wider by 40mmat the front and 50mm at the rear - works incombination with a revised suspension for

superior cornering.Creature comforts have always been a

trademark of Lexus and painstakingattention to detail has been applied to new GScabin.

Apart from adding extra passenger spaceand a long, sculpted dash, there are reviseddoor openings for easier entry and exit, andbetter boot access to go with an almost 25 percent increase in luggage capacity.

Premium examples of standard equipmentinclude a new energy-saving auto climatecontrol system called S-Flow which uses the

occupant-detection system to focus airflowonly to the front area where passengers areactually seated - a first-in-class technology.

And a next-generation Remote Touch isstandard on all models for smootheroperation of climate, audio, phone controlsand sat-nav. The cabin also has a newanalogue clock carved from an ingot, andambient lighting, while white LED lightssequentially illuminate the areas around thedoors, centre console and footwells.

Among the class-leading 10 airbags in thenew GS, there are knee airbags for both

driver and front passenger while rearoccupants have seat-mounted side bags. Newwhiplash injury-lessening front seatsincrease the chance that occupants will be inthe optimum position at a moment of impact.

Options include a pre-collision system,which uses the dynamic radar cruise controlset-up to provide early warning of objectsthat might result in a collision.

And the system also uses an infraredcamera to monitor the driver’s eyes. If thedriver is not looking forward when acollision appears imminent, the system willsound a warning.

If the driver still doesn’t respond, thesystem will automatically brake up to twoseconds prior to impact.

Other available safety systems includenight vision, head-up display, blind spotmonitor and lane departure warning.

And next-generation Lexus multimediabrings the likes of enhanced Bluetoothcapability with automatic phonebookdownload, DVD audio and videocompatibility, MP3 sound enhancement, 5.1Surround Sound, and a high-res eight-inchcentral control display.

For the ultimate in audio performance, an835-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson audiosystem is available providing 7.1 SurroundSound through 10 channels using a new classdigital amplifier and more efficient GreenEdge speakers. In fact the new systemproduces almost three times as many wattsper channel as the previous generation.

MOTORSUp! up! andawaywith newVWHIGH-FLYING Volkswagen is aimingto go up in the world with a new cityslicker expected to take the motoringscene by storm.

The up! will make its debut at nextmonth’s Frankfurt Motor Show aheadof a springtime sale date and is seen asa car to cater for every budget.

Its principal rivals include the likesof the Fiat 500 and while the little VWshares the Italian’s funky looks, theup! also boasts space, efficiency andcomfort.

As a replacement for theVolkswagen Fox, the up! is likely to

start at around £8,000 and claims tooffer maximum space on a minimalfootprint, making it ideal for citydriving.

It is actually one of the smallestfour-seater cars around but boastsexceptional passenger room due to along wheelbase and forward-mountedengine.

The 251-litre boot is alsosignificantly larger than is typical inits class and when the rear seat is fullyfolded, cargo space is increased to auseful 951 litres.

There are three versions for

different needs - take up! is theentry-level car; move up! thecomfort-oriented model and high up!the top version.

And from launch there will also betwo models based on the flagshipgrade, called up! black and up! white.

A new generation of three-cylinderengines with outputs of 60 and 75PS,fuel saving BlueMotion technology,Stop/Start and – on the 60PS version –emissions of less than 100g/km willgrace the new models while there arealso plans for a version with electricdrive. HIGH-FLIER: The new Volkswagen Up!

A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 originallybought and owned by Sir PaulMcCartney goes under the hammerat H&H Classic Auctions nextmonth.

The model, the same as the DB5which starred in James Bond filmGoldfinger, was ordered by Maccaprior to The Beatles’ 1964 worldtour and is in Sierra Blue withblack leathertrim.

And theBritish MotorIndustryHeritageTrust hasconfirmedthat thisvehicle -chassis1653/R - wasindeed firstregistered to McCartney.

According to the factory record,it was built on July 3 anddespatched to the musician’saccountants, Bryce, Hanmer &Isherwood on September 22.

Factory-fitted extras includedSelectaride suspension, Motorolaradio, chrome wire wheels and aPhillips Auto-Mignon record player.The purchase price was £3,800 10s0d plus £793 6s 8d tax.

In 2006 it was entrusted it toBritish car specialist Walter Baroniof Milan for a bare metalrestoration, the work on which wasfinally completed earlier this year.

The auction is at the ImperialWar Museum in London onSeptember 21 and while it’s notknown how much the car will fetch,an ex-George Harrison DB5 sold in2007 for 464,736 dollars.

AMAZING the difference afew well-consideredchanges can make. Takethe latest Vauxhall Corsaas a case in point.

As part of its effort to lure moreyoung drivers to the marque, thecompany gave the car a smart newstyle courtesy of a redesigned nose,fresh headlamps and some vividnew colours.

And if looks are anything to goby, the move will pay off in spadesbecause there’s no doubt thepopular supermini now appearsmore chic than ever.

The facelifted model, following onfrom other top Vauxhall sellers likethe Astra and larger Insignia,features a chrome signature barunder the bonnet housing thecompany’s new Griffin badge.

Daytime running lights are fittedas standard and chrome details arenow a feature around the fog lampswhile fresh paint jobs include

orange, lime green and an off-whitefinish called Guacamole.

The Sunny Melon colour on thetested Excite model costs an extra£100, but it’s so eye-catching thatthe additional outlay is worthwhile.

For a supermini the Corsa is aspacious car – there’s room forthree across the back and the centrerear position is comfortable, whileyou get ample headroom andupholstery that feels both upmarketand durable.

Changes inside the cabin includea range of different coloured doortrims, centre consoles, air vent

rings and door handles, though themost significant is a new Touch &Connect multimedia system thatreplaces the old CD60 unit.

It forms part of an instrumentpanel that resembles a spaceman’sface, with large eye-like air vents,hazard warning flasher nose, arectangular mouth-like touchscreenand three air-con dials on the ‘chin’.

Oddment space is also useful withdoor bins, a glovebox, threecupholders, an iPod input and apair of coin slots.

The end result is a much moremodern, well insulated andenjoyable small car; one that canalso swallow 285 litres of luggageand considerably more with therear bench lowered.

In urban conditions the Corsa isat its best, feeling well balanced,comfortable to drive and capable ofsqueezing into tight parking spots.

Only when you need to openthings up are the 1.2-litre engine’s

limitations exposed. It takes an agefor the car to pick up its feet, reallylabouring on anything moreinclined than a level surface,though once you get there the Corsafeels stable at the motorway limit.

Vauxhall’s official Combined fuelfigure is a healthy 53.3 miles pergallon, which is a lot better than the42.1mpg I registered.

Every version now comes wellequipped while the Excite modeladds the likes of Bluetooth, air-conand alloy wheels.

Prices for the latest Corsa rangestart at £8,995 for a 1.0-litreExpression ecoFLEX three-doormodel, but the limited editionfive-door Excite, with 85bhp 1.2-litrepetrol engine, is £13,360.

Morgandevelops electric supercarA NEW high-performanceelectric sports car prototype isbeing developed by Morgan with aconsortium of British technospecialists.

The Morgan +E programmewill deliver two engineeringconcept cars early next year,both based on a development of

the Aero Supersport’saluminium chassis.

But the 4.8-litre BMW V8engine will be replaced by a newderivative of Zytek’s highpower-density electricpowertrain driving through aconventional manual gearbox.

The project is being

part-funded by a £100,000 grantfrom the Niche VehicleNetwork, which promotes thedevelopment of new technologyto take advantage of marketopportunities for lower carbonvehicles.

“This is an excitinginvestigation into the potential

for a zero-emissions Morganwith near supercarperformance,” says Morgan’sOperations Director, SteveMorris.

Zytek’s first experience withan electric sportscar was in 1997when it converted a Lotus Eliseto electric drive.
