CONSUMERS haved beenwarned not to accept helpfrom any stranger when us-
ing an automated teller machine(ATM).
Standard Bank media liaisonofficer Kershia Singh said ma-chine users shouldmake sure thatthe card they get back from theATM after the transaction is theirown.
Standard Bank was contactedbyEchonewspaperafterincidentsofATMscamhadbeen reported tohave been taking place at thebank’s ATM in the Greater Eden-dale Mall.
TheATMscam is happening toother ATMs for different banks, not only at the Standard BankATMs.
According to the victims thereis a group of women who pretendtoofferhelpat theATMoutside thecenter near JAM store at themall. One of the victims said shewent totheATMtomakeatransactiontwoweeks ago.
“As I was approaching theATM, a lady with a short hair justappeared in front of me. I let herused the ATM first as she was al-ready in front of me. She did notwithdraw anymoney but she tookout a slip and she toldme she wasdone. “I went ahead and insertedmy card. The moment I put in thecard it asked for the pin. As I wasbusy doing that, it said ‘cancel’.The lady with the short hair wasnot far from the machine and shetoldme to press the second buttonof the ATM on my left.
“Insteadshewastheonepress-ing the button for me. I told her tostop as I was cancelling the trans-action,” said the victim.
She saidwhen she tried to can-cel, the card was already swal-lowed by the machine.
“At that time another womanjust showed up and advisedme topress the second button. Sherushed to press it forme and I toldher to stop. The card didn’t comeout and Iwent straight to the bankand cancelled the card.
“Oneladytoldmethat thesamehadhappened toherweeksbeforeat the same ATM”.
SouthAfricanRiskInformationCentre(SABRIC)chiefexecutiveof-ficer Kalyani Pillay said criminalsjamtheATMssothat thecardisre-tained when the victim tries totransact.
“Theyare in the vicinity so thatthey can shoulder surf for the PINnumber. They then pretend to as-sist the victim who is then con-vinced that the card has been re-tainedbytheATMandleavethear-ea. They then take the card out ofthe machine, dislodge the card, trap that they had inserted andthen immediately use the card tomake unauthorised withdrawals.
These card traps are often re-ferred to as “Lebanese loops,” shesaid. GreaterEdendaleMallpublicrelations officer Lindani Shangesaid they have had no reports ofsuch incidents at their StandardATM near Roots.
He, however, as a member ofthe Business Against Crime ro-rum, the mall is aware of the in-crease of such scams..
“The forumhas suggested thatthebanks, shoppingmalls and theSAP collaborate and work harderintheireffortstoeducatethepublicon safety and security when usingATMs”, said Shange

Why is UKZN treating the isiZuluwith contempt?
ONEofthesickjokeswhichIgrewuphear-ing was about a certain guy who got aPh.D in isiZulu. And this guywas gradu-
ating.Sovariouspeoplewereenjoyinghisgrad-uation party and one of the learned gentlemenwho had attended the party asked: “What wasyour Ph. D. on?”
“Zulu, Zulu language…” he responded.“Hmn, esiZulwini pho?” (meaning, ‘obvi-
ously, it’s nothing to be proud of.’Well, yes, I grew up amongst people who
heldthisview. But Ididnotsharethesentiment. When I think of the amount of beautiful litera-ture I have cherished withmy intelligent friends thathasbeenwrittenby isiZuluwriters–Iamtalkingaboutshortstories, novels, plays, poetry, prose, grammarbooks, religious books – Isee nothing inferior aboutisiZulu. So it was ratherdisturbing to note the re-cent developments at theUniversityofKwaZulu-Na-tal with regards to theirnew policy on isiZulu.
How can the university say isiZulu will becompulsory to all during the first year and thenit will not be offered at any other higher level? This is absurd.
It is like the typical SouthAfricanpractice ofappointingablackmanagerinaprivatecompa-ny just so that he or she will be a black face ina pool of white-dominated management. Wecall it window-dressing in our rainbow nationculture, don’t we? It feels like the university isdoing the same sort of thingwithmy language.Theyarepretendingas if it is suchan importantlanguage–onethateveryonemust learnduringthe first year.Butonly foroneyear, okay, just forone year.
Iwonderwhattypeofarrogancepropelsoneto disrespect the Zulus in this fashion in theirland of birth. The isiZulu speakers are consid-ered tobeamongst the largest tribes in theAfri-cancontinent.Theyareaproudpeople thatarea victorious part of the broader Nguni tribes.
The Zulus are respected for being the firstcolonisedpeople todefeat aBritisharmy, albeittemporarily.History tellsus that theZuluswerethe last tribe in southern Africa to succumb toWesternculture,includingthewhiteman’sedu-cation and his religion, not so much becausethey were stupid, but rather because they didnot see the need to renounce their culture andway of life since they were satisfied and happywith their clan heads and king. History tells us
thattheZulusannoyedtheBritishEmpirewhentheir Christian Bishop (Colenso), became anEnglish-Zulu as he adopted black culture, drankAfricanbrewandmarriedblackwomen.
Hence that Bishop was to be honoured byhaving one of the country’s oldest townshipsnamedafterhim(Sobantu).TheZulushavegiv-en aname to themost popular liberation strug-gle armedwing in the continent, knownasUm-khonto weSizwe (meaning the spear of the na-tion), in honour of King Shaka Zulu, thelegendarymilitary strategist. As though that isnot enough, the longest-serving intelligence
head of theANC in exilewasa Zulu leader who now hap-pens to be the president ofthe country – it is none otherthan Jacob GedleyihlekisaZuma himself.
The Zulus are the onlytribe that has a highly pat-ronised,visibleandcultural-ly relevant king – probablymore relevant than thewell-financed and popular Brit-ish monarch. I was in awe
when one traditional healerwas onUkhozi FMdemandingthataninternationalcelebrationbestaged to honour King Shaka. Despite the factthat nothing came out of that clarion call, it in-trigued me to hear the traditional healer sayKingShakawantstoberecognisedinternation-ally because his people and their language areall over the world.
ImarveledwhenMbongeniNgema’sSarafi-na musical enforced my belief that Zulu danceisaworld-classperformance.Westerndance isnosuperiortoZuludance, andsoisthelanguageof the twonations. Is theUKZNreinforcing thebelief that foreign languages are more impor-tant than the language of the indigenous peo-ple?There is something arrogant about under-mining the significance of the isiZulu languagein the landof theZulus. But again it is commonto see the Zulu people treated with disrespectinSouthAfrica. It is common to seeaTVdramaseriesdepictingZulusasbackward, farm-boys,stupid or something like that. I amsure the his-tory of the so-called “black-on-black” violencethatwasdrivenfromKZNdidnothelpourrepu-tation as so-called mindless stoogies.
There isonlyone thing Icansay to theUKZNmanagement: Idonot thinkthatshowingdisre-spect toothershasdesirableoutcomes.Thede-cision to treat Zulu language in thismanner of-fends some of us.

Coach responds to Thabo’s article
SirI AM writing in response to the article thatappeared in the Maritzburg Echo on Thursday, 22 August 2013to disagree with his coaching comment.Thabo should have a good look at South
African football as a whole unit, from thenational team to the u/11 competitiveleagues. We are not winning any major Fifa
regulated competitions. This is primarily because our grass roots
coaches don’t want to use sports sciencein training programmes. They are not qualified or they don’t know how to use it. Orare they afraid of people like Thabo whochoose to pass their judgement on sportconditioning programmes that are working everywhere else.
Why does every team in the PSL have aconditioning coach. He/she does not havea football brain but they know how to condition the body. Further there is no suchthing as getting fit with the ball. You needto train all the components of fitness (agility, flexibility, cardio muscular endurance)ect. Skills and drills are the exercise onecan use to do soccer specific training. Every
athlete from the age of 4 must be trainedto do exercises that build the muscular system, skeletal system and the cardio respiratory system. They should perform it according to their
age specific in intensity and volume.

After a goalless draw in the first legin Soweto more than a fortnight ago,the1-1drawonthenightandonaggre-gate sees the Buccaneers advance onaway goals.
RooiMahamutsascored thecrucialgoal early in the second half for theSouth African side.
Esperancesettledquicklyanddom-inated the opening minutes of thematch, pinning Pirates back in theirown half and enjoying the majority ofpossession. Yet Bucs gradually got afoothold in the game and threatenedwith theirathleticismandspeedonthecounter attack.
On 18 minutes the visitors’ pacesliced open Esperance’s defence andsentTlouSegolela throughongoal, but
the winger opted for a difficult pass toLennox Bacela rather than shootinghimself,andthechancequicklyevapo-rated.
On 29 minutes Segolela almostcaughtoutgoalkeeperMoezBenCher-ifa with a cross-shot to the near postthat forced theEsperanceNo1 topalmthe ball away for a corner kick.
Two minutes later Senzo Meyiwagot lucky at the other end, as he onlyhalf-stopped an awkward long rangeshot from Houcine Ragued – the ballloopedupandbouncedoffthetopofthecrossbar for a corner kick.
Shortly thereafterhewascalledup-ontomakeanothertrickystop, initiallyfumblinga shot froma freekickbut re-covering in time to prevent HarrisonAfful from having a tap-in.
Pirates started the second halfstrongly and only an amazing savefrom Ben Cherifa stopped Daine Klateheading home Segolela’s cross in the

Yet the Soweto giants then went tosleep at the back and allowed Esper-anceto level thegameat1-1inthe55thminute. Winger Youcef Belaili provid-edalowcrossfromtherightandsubsti-tute IhebMsakni swept the ball home.
On 58 minutes Happy Jele had agreat chance to put Bucs back in frontwith a freeheader fromanother excel-lent Segolela delivery, but he only suc-ceededinhitting thepost, whileBacelamade a mess of the rebound chance.
