Motivations
quantum world)。
Six Grand Challenges and Compelling Research Opportunities for
AMO Science in the Next Decade
1. Revolutionary new methods to measure the nature of space and time
with extremely high precision. This new capability creates unprecedented new
research opportunities.
2. Ultracold AMO physics is one of the most successful new AMO research area
of the past decade and led to the development of coherent quantum gases, such
as Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). This new field is poised to make major
contributions to resolving important fundamental problems in condensed matter
and AMO science and in plasma physics, bringing with it new interdisciplinary
opportunities.
3. High-intensity and short-wavelength sources such as new x-ray free-
electron lasers, very-high-order harmonic generation (HHG), and
attosecond lasers promise significant advances in AMO science,
condensed matter physics and materials research, chemistry, medicine,
and defense-related science.
4. Ultrafast quantum control will unveil the internal motion of atoms within
molecules, and of electrons within atoms, to a degree thought impossible
only a decade ago. This is sparking a revolution in the imaging and coherent
control of quantum processes and will be among the most fruitful new areas
of AMO science in the next 10 years.
5. Quantum engineering on the nanoscale of tens to hundreds of atomic
diameters has led to new opportunities for atom-by-atom control of
quantum structures using the techniques of AMO science.
6. Quantum information is a rapidly growing research area in AMO science
and one that faces special challenges owing to its potential application in
data security and encryption. Multiple approaches to quantum computing
and communication are likely to be fruitful in the coming decade, and open
international exchange of people and information is critical in order to
realize the maximum benefit.
(Institute for
Quantum Science and Engineering (IQSE)),IQSE

Our aims:
• To establish an interdisciplinary study of advancedcomputational algorithms and their applications inlarge scale computations in science and engineering, which has been long overdue at NTU.
• To provide a platform for experts in computationalscience and engineering to get together, to developnew algorithms of common interests, and to benefit from each other’s expertise.
• To build up supercomputer network for large scale computing.
22
GPU Supercomputer of CQSE
• CQSE is now acquiring a GPU cluster
which constitutes of 16 units of Nvidia
Tesla S1070 (total 64 GPU, 64 x 4 GB),
the first GPU supercomputer in NTU.
• The peak performance is 64 Tflops,
which is at least 50 times higher
than that of any PC cluster with the
same price tag.
• With our GPU supercomputer, we can
tackle many large scale computations
without using the prohibitively expensive
supercomputers like IBM BlueGene/L.
• We have developed highly efficient
CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture )
codes for our computationally intense problems
(QCD, quantum Monte Carlo, and
self gravitating gas, etc).
