ECD 110 – Early Childhood Growth and Development
Welcome to ECD 110
Welcome to the online section of ECD 110 – Early Childhood Growth and Development.
We will be delving into the fascinating world of growth and development in young children. The practicum activities and assignments will, hopefully, challenge you throughout the semester.
Make sure you view the entire PowerPoint because you are responsible for knowing this information as well as the info in the Practicum Orientation PowerPoint and course syllabus.
What to Expect
The course is organized by weeks.
Most weeks you will have some reading, a short quiz, assignment, and discussion board.
A proctored test is required for completion of this course, per OTC policy.
As with any course, to be successful you must commit to spending time on completing the reading and assignments.
Syllabus and Course Outline
The Syllabus and Schedule of Topics (course calendar) are the MOST important documents you have for this course. Both can be found on the Blackboard course menu.
Most questions can be answered by reading the Syllabus.
You should ALWAYS follow the Schedule of Topics. It contains the weekly schedule, assignments, and point values.
Practicum
This course has a practicum component – 50 hours of direct contact with young children aged birth to 8 years.
The Practicum Experience Orientation PowerPoint will answer most of your questions regarding your practicum experience.
Remember – your practicum paperwork is due no later than Monday, 01.26.15.
This gives you 2 weeks to find a practicum site and get your paperwork completed and submitted.
Weekly Lessons
Each lesson is contained in a folder that includes:
Chapter Reading
Chapter PowerPoint
Practicum Assignment
Discussion Board
You are responsible for knowing the information in the reading assignments and PowerPoints – any of this information may be used for test material at a later date.
Discussion Board
Most weeks you will participate in an online discussion about issues in the field. This takes the place of face-to-face discussion you would have in a seated class.
For this class, initial postings will need to be at least 100 words and are always due by Friday. Initial postings are worth 10 points each.
You will respond to at least one other student in the class. Responses should be at least 50 words each and are always due by Sunday. Responses are worth 5 points each.
Weekly Assignment
Submissions
ALL assignments (except the Discussion Boards) will be submitted via the assignment link within the weekly folder.
To submit assignments, click on the title of each assignment. A window will open where you can attach your assignment file.
Upload your documents – do not paste text in the comment box.
Acceptable file types are Microsoft Office .docx, pptx, xlsx and Adobe .pdf.
Due Dates
There are TWO due dates each week in this class.
Your INITIAL post in the discussion board is due by FRIDAY at 11:59 PM.
ALL assignments and responses to the discussion board are due by SUNDAY at 11:59 PM each week.
Some assignments may require 2 weeks to complete.
Grading
Assignments are due on the assigned due date. Late work is not acceptable; however, emergencies, serious illnesses, etc. do occur.
Late assignments will incur a 10% deduction each day up to 5 days.
After 5 days, the grade will revert to a “0.”
Online Student Conduct
Use proper capitalization, spelling, and grammar.
Include descriptive but concise subject lines.
Never transmit or promote content known to be illegal.

If you live within 30 miles of an OTC campus, you must take the proctored exam at OTC unless you utilize ProctorU.
More details can be found in the syllabus, course Blackboard site, and the OTC website.
Administrative Withdrawal
In an online class, it is very important that you log in to Blackboard at least 3 times each week. You should also be checking your email regularly.
If at any point during the semester, you fail to complete any work for 14 days, you may be administratively withdrawn from this class. If you are having issues, please contact me via email. Don’t wait until you have been dropped.
