Blast Cleaning
Surface preparation is used to remove existing paints, corrosion, graffiti or oxidization, it is also used to allow coatings to adhere to the surface. Blast cleaning generally provides the best method of surface preparation.
Advantages of Blast Cleaning:- - Fastest method – compared to wire brush or chipping hammer - Used to remove existing coatings and give surface profile to ensure a strong bond with new coating when applied. - Fastest production of all the different techniques of surface preparation. - Fully controllable. - Low vibration as opposed to alternative methods.
Types of Blasting:- - Wet Blast – used in situations that are dust free, or a gentler blast that wont damage the underlying surface is required. - Pressure Blast – usually used for removing rust from bridges or other steel structures. - Suction Blast – used for more gentle cleaning, and requires less equipment. - Wheel Blast – Used in fixed installations with ball shot to clean and peen surfaces by impact.
Open or Contained Blasting:- - Open Blast – used on site by contractors where the media will not be recovered. - Blast Cabinets – usually used to blast smaller objects in a contained environment. - Blast Rooms – These rooms provide an enclosed environment for containing dusts and collecting and recovering media.
8
Abrasive Blasting Media
A large variety of blast media can be used in the blasting process, and each have their own performance and cost. The main categories of these medias are: -Expendable Abrasives – low cost, one-use abrasive -Reusable Abrasive – more expensive, but can be used several times where collection and recovery is available.
Expendable abrasives are majorly designed for open nozzle blasting, such as mobile blast units where the media cannot be recovered because after one use, the media breaks down and is discarded. None of the products we sell contain ‘free silica’, which allows them to be used without the hazards of silicosis – which occurs if traditional sand is used. Ecco stock a wide range of types and grades to suit your application. The type of abrasive is usually chosen depending on the material or coating to be removed and the substrate material for example; steel, stone or brick.

Blast Helmets
Nova 2000 The Nova 2000 is fast becoming the most popular helmet for professional blasters, due to its quiet and comfortable design. It is lightweight and fits firmly around the head. This helmet apparatus consists of three main components: -Helmet assembly -Breathing tube assembly -Air supply hose All three components must be present and properly assembled to constitute a complete EN271 and AS/NZS 1716 approved Compressed Airline Breathing Apparatus.
Apollo 60 This air fed blasting helmet is the ultimate in safety and comfort. It features a double shell construction that provides air circulation around the operators head. Noise levels inside the helmet are kept low, thanks to the exclusive air distribution. Air is brought into the top of the helmet, passes over the entire head and is filtered out through a knitted neck band that gently seals against the operators neck. All air fed blasting helmets are required to be CE Marked by law. The Apollo 60 is marked as complex items under BS EN 271.

Blasting Nozzles Our nozzles are available with a choice of liners in a number of styles, lengths and bore sizes. Our Venturi nozzles are available with either a 32mm or 25mm diameter entry. To ensure that these nozzles have a long working life, nozzles should always be placed in the appropriate nozzle holder using the gasket supplied. This gasket should then be replaced at the first sign of wear. We supply a whole range of nozzles including; tungsten carbide aluminium jacketed nozzles, tungsten carbide spinner blast nozzles, nylon jacketed nozzles, straight bore nozzles and Syclone nozzles, double venturi nozzles, hollow blast nozzles jacketed water jet nozzles, angled nozzles and boron alloy nozzles. All Ecco nozzles including the long life, a choice of fine thread, or the coarse contractor thread, provide quick release from the nozzle holder, therefore avoiding grit entrapment. The aluminium jacketed, or PU jacketed nozzles are optional, however both protect the Venturi or Straight bore nozzle insert from damage. If you would like further information on any of these nozzles please contact us.

Remote Control Systems The popular Ecco Remote Control Deadman Valve (remote control system) incorporates two valves in one body, the lower for compressed air inlet and the upper for controlling the exhaust outlet of the abrasive blast cleaning machine.
The remote control Deadman Valve is fitted to all blast machines as standard. It allows the machine to be depressurized from a remote Deadman handle fitted at the blasting nozzle position and is designed for easy used and maintenance, with the need for tools kept to a minimum. These handles are essential for safe operation of the blast machine.
Moisture Separator Moisture separators are required in shot blasting to remove the moisture from the system before it slows the process down. Moisture in the system can prevent abrasives from flowing properly, therefore a moisture separator is vital to stop water/moisture entering the media and causing blockages.
Abrasive Metering Valves Micro Valve – Typically fitted to a portable blast unit for use with all types of media. Accurate abrasive control and long life. Steel Grit Valve – Fitted to a portable blast unit for use with all types of medias. Thompson Valve - An air operated abrasive metering valve which opens to the preset position on receiving an air signal, eliminating the initial surge of abrasive. Garnet Valve – Cost effective, manually operated ball type abrasive feed control valve, specifically designed for use with garnet abrasive. Flat Sand Valve – The flat sand valve is utilised to provide precise metering of abrasive from the blast unit to the blast hose.

EBAN 4000 Coating Thickness Meter - Measures all coatings on steel and iron substrates using the magnetic induction principle, ensuring the correct coating thickness has been applied. Other models of the EBAN 4000 can be supplied upon request. TESTEX TAPE and TESTEX GAUGE - A unique replica technique and a simple snap gauge make possible accurate, low-cost blast surface profile measurements. Testex makes surface replicas easy to obtain and produces average maximum peak-to-valley readings that ensure optimum blasting effectiveness. Replicas can be retained for future needs. TRICOMB Wet Film Gauge - Ensures the quality control of the paint thickness while the coating is still wet. Applying too much coating can be expensive. Digital Thermometer - Allows the measurement of the substrate temperature to be taken immediately. This ensures that the substrate can be maintained at a temperature sufficiently above the dew point to prevent moisture forming on the uncoated surface. RH% Dewpoint Meter - Allows the determination of the relative humidity, dew point and air temperature before the application of a coating. Specifications usually detail that the relative humidity and the dew point temperature must be strictly adhered to, and that the surface temperature is monitored. Bresle Test - Many coatings fail due to salts such as chlorides and sulphates contaminating the surface prior to the coating application. This contamination can be tested quickly and simply using the Bresle Test.
