EBR ELA Instructional Framework
Literacy and Language Guide: A Workshop Approach to Reading, Writing, and Word Study
The Journeys Common Core Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop Approach is designed to get students thinking, talking, reading, and writing about text in a way
that supports learning and fosters a love of reading. The Literacy and Language Guide combines the rigor of the Journeys Common Core program with active literacy learning through effective resources that you need for your Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.
The ELA Instructional Framework is a common core aligned thematic unit which maximizes teacher autonomy. ELA teachers in grades K-5 can use the framework to create more specific, daily lesson plans for the students they teach. Exemplars from the Journeys Core Program were used to create a common
thread within the unit of instruction and are listed as anchor texts. Texts of varying complexity are included as related texts to align with the standards and themes within each unit. Throughout the unit, students will experience routine writing, analytical writing, narrative writing, and the research extension task.

2015-2016 Grade 3 ELA Instructional Framework Unit Focus: Students learn about the value of companionship and the joy of finding friends in unexpected places. Students recognize the effects of characters’ motivations, thoughts, feelings, and points of view on events in stories.

Review the story Amos & Boris. Consider how the central message is demonstrated by the main characters in the text. Write an essay that explains the central message of Amos & Boris. Describe how each character’s thoughts, feelings, and actions convey this central message. Make sure to use evidence from the text to support your ideas.

Research Extension Task
Students will research famous friendships (real or fictional). Teachers should brainstorm these friendships with the students through prior knowledge, as well as introduce new friendships to the students through read-alouds, flipcharts, historical texts, videos, etc. Students will work together to research and identify what made these friendships strong. What were the friends’ feelings, thoughts, and actions that made them good friends? Students will then identify what they can learn about friendship from these famous “characters”. They will combine their learning into one final product that conveys the central message of the importance of friendship and how to be a good friend. Offer students a choice of how to display their final products. Ideas include: a friendship “Wanted” poster, a recipe card for friendship, a cartoon illustrating friendship, a how-to manual, a brochure, an original song/rap, a letter, or any other ideas the students generate.
