    Luton Town vs Ebbsfleet United

    Football Conference

    2009-10 Premier 2-3 6-1

The Hatters and The Fleet have only met twice in the clubshistories when the two clubs locked horns in the 2009-10season, the first season Luton dropped down to the Confer-ence.

The home match for Luton fans is remembered for all the

wrong reasons, a terrible performance which saw Ebbsfleetdeservedly win 3-2. After Liam Hatch had put the Townahead, rather against the run of play, Ebbsfleet turned thematch on its head with two goals in four minutes from MagnoVieira just before half time. Tom Craddock hit a second halfequaliser for the homesters but just two minutes later it wasthe visitors who would retake the lead with Moses Ashikodiscoring the games final goal.

It was a shock result for the Luton fans, the Town had been

putting a run together having won their previous three games(and indeed also won the three games after this match) whileEbbsfleet were struggling in 20th place , the last relegationspot so the match was being seen by many as a forgoneconclusion but come the end of the match their were fewcomplaints from the home faithful that the better team on theday had won.

Come the return fixture at Kent again Luton had put a run ofwins together having been victorious in the previous four

games and with Ebbsfleet still struggling at the wrong end ofthe table it was seen as a good chance for revenge. Howeverthe first half didnt play out that way with Ebbsfleet going intothe break a goal to the good thanks to an own goal fromJanos Kovacs!

The second period was a different matter entirely though asLuton ran riot, two goals in as many minutes from ClaudeGnakpa and Kevin Gallen within five minutes of the restartturned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, Claude scoring from acorner swung in by Keith Keane and Gallen getting on theend of a flick on by Tom Craddock following a throw.

Now with their tails up Luton took the home team apart andin the 66th minute a flowing Town move finished with Crad-dock putting the Hatters 3-1 to the good. A further two goalsin two minutes (again) turned it into 5-1 with Claude glancinga Howells cross into the back of the net in the 76th minutebefore the Frenchman completed his hattrick moments laterafter receiving a poor clearance and slamming the ball home.

The sixth and final Town goal came in injury time, MatthewBarnes-Homer joining the action when he got on the end of aShane Blackett long ball to shoot past the Ebbsfleet keeper.

    8/8

The 6-1 win was the first time Luton had scored six awaysince the 1963-64 season when the Town won 6-2 at Brent-ford in Division 3 of the Football League. And although thelast five goal away win wasnt that long ago, 5-0 at ColchesterUnited in 2002-03 (FL Division 2), it isnt a regular winningmargin for the Hatters on their travels and you have to goback to 1967-68 for the previous time Luton won by five ormore when a 5-0 win at Exeter City (FL Division 4) was

    recorded.

This isnt the complete story when it comes to fixtures be-tween the two sides as Luton have met both the two teamsthat merged to form what is now known as Ebbsfleet United.

Ebbsfleet United were formed in 1946 as Gravesend & North-fleet (the name change to Ebbsfleet United occurred asrecently as 2007 following a takeover from MyFootballClub,an ambitious idea which would allow anyone to buy into theclub and vote on decisions on how the club would be run), asyou may have guessed the founder clubs were GravesendUnited (founded 1893) and Northfleet United (founded 1890).

The Towns solitary first team fixture against Northfleet was inthe FA Cup back in 1926 with Luton winning 6-2 at KenilworthRoad, while Gravesend where opponents in the SouthernLeague Division One in 1900-01 with Luton winning the homefixture 5-2 and drawing away 2-2.

However you can go back further still, Gravesend first ap-

pearing on the Towns fixture list in 1896-97 when Lutonvisited them twice, the first ever match being played atGravesends Overcliffe Ground and while Luton took the leadthrough Samuel Davies in the sixth minute the home teamequalised in the second half as the match finished 1-1.

The next game was played a few months later and this timeLuton won 4-2, both games were friendlies which were usedto bolster the fixture lists back in the day. Two seasons laterGravesend would play their first game at Luton, with the Town

winning 3-1 before a 2-2 draw was played out at Gravesendshortly after, again both were friendlies.

As for Northfleet, the first match between the two clubs waswhen Luton Reserves went Northfleet in 1894-95, a toughmatch was expected as Northfleet had won every game thatthey had played so far in that season. The Reserves caughttheir hosts cold and went into a 4-0 lead, but Northfleet werenot about to lose their 100% record without a fight and pulledit back to 4-4 before the final whistle went! Typical Luton

    springs to mind!!

Hugh Galbraith scored Lutonsfourth in the 4-2 win at Graves-end in the 1896-97 friendly,Luton had led 3-0 at half timebefore being pegged back to

3-2 with Galbraiths goal beendescribed as a splendid longshot.
