Blaxhall Village Hall Reaches 100 Year Milestone

Blaxhall Village Hall is 100 years old this coming December and we are going to have a party to celebrate. On the afternoon of Saturday 17 December there will be tea and cakes; archive displays; a film show and a bone china commemorative mug for you to take home as a keepsake of the event. Tickets are now available at £5 per person. Children under 12 free. Get yours now! Contact either Jill Suckling on 01728 688317 or Rodney West on 01728 688611 for your tickets.

The village really pushed the boat out 100 years ago with classical singing and dancing performances plus, of course, lots of food. The whole show was set on the road with an Opening Speech by Lord Ullswater, the local worthy.

This December 2011, for one night only the spectre of Lord Ullswater will return to deliver, again, his original speech. There will be inputs by various institutions of the village and we would like to ask the readers of Ebb and Flow, if they have any stories of ‘do’s’ past at the Hall, or photographs, videos etc that they would like to share with us. If so please contact Rodney West on the number above and we can arrange some way of copying them.

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain

In the last 24 years when we have been running The Walled Garden, we have never left it for longer than a couple of weeks. In August we bought a bungalow for Marion's mother. It is a 1970s building with various poorly done improvements so we knew that there was a certain amount of work to be carried out. Because of the design of the building, there is a large amount of cold external wall and we felt that insulating what we could would help to keep the heating bills under control. So we ordered 29 large sheets of insulated plasterboard. By fixing this on the inside of these cold wall, we knew that not only would this make a huge improvement in reducing heat loss but it was also an opportunity to hide much of the plumbing and newly installed cables. This seemed a straightforward amount of work, but then there was the kitchen to replace and the bathroom and so it goes on, ad finitum. I have been working on this a minimum of 3 days per week. Quite a lot of time is also spent reading up on new techniques for carrying out the work and buying the parts. So the nursery has largely been left in the hands of the staff and they have managed really well without us. Do we really need to carry on working a 6 day week for most of the year in the future? There has been enough rain to fill up my irrigation tank. This has a capacity of 40 cubic metres, and if for every inch of steady rain, I capture about 10 cubic metres, that saves about £13 though there is the cost of electricity for pumping it. Our local mains water is hard and when misted over plants for any length of time leaves a chalky deposit on the leaves. The rainwater is soft and beneficial. It leaves no deposit and does not raise the alkalinity of the composts and so is good especially for plants such as Azaleas and Camellias which like acid soils. The rain was just enough to revive those trees the leaves of which were turning brown and falling, not because of the natural autumnal drop, but because of the dryness of the soil. Acer freemanii 'Autumn Blaze' which usually lives up to its name has this year struggled as its leaves withered and dropped before it was able to come fully alive with its fiery display.Today I have the satisfaction of having completed two outstanding jobs. At the end of every financial year, we have to count our stock and present our accountant with a valuation. One of the problems with a fine warm autumn is that the plants in pots and patios keep flowering. Instead of being pulled out in early September, these plants are still flowering away in mid October. By then the days are shortening and the strength of the sun decreases. Sunlight is the power that makes leaves and ultimately flowers, so the later plants are put in, the less time

they have to grow to flowering size. To solve this problem we produced out wallflowers in small pots instead of cells. We even put some controlled release fertiliser in the mix to keep these hungry plants supplied with nutrients. Customers were able to buy bigger, branched wallflowers which they could plant later and have the assurance that they would be large enough to flower in the spring. Wallflowers may not flower through the winter as pansies do, but at the end of winter, they erupt into flower and glorious scent which is ample compensation for the long growing time. Interspersed with a few tall tulips it is easy to produce a memorable display and all is over by the time the summer flowering plants come along.

Village Hall Cinema

The November date with the Glemham silver screen was Faintheart, a lighthearted take on the world of historical re-enactments. This very funny film was well received by an appreciative audience, and the Viking theme was supported by some truly amazing dressing up and a fine line in pickled herrings.

The next date for the Great Glemham Village Hall Cinema promises to be just as amusing. It is:

Saving Grace (15)

on Friday 9th December 2011 (doors open at 7.15, programme starts at 7.45)

When her husband dies, prim and proper Grace is left with huge debts and is likely to lose her lovely Cornish house and garden. Her gardener comes up with a plan to make use of her talent for gardening and grow a certain cash crop in her greenhouse. They are blithely unaware that the whole village, including the local constable, knows what they are up to, but everything starts to unravel and it seems their plans are likely to go up in smoke.

This delightful comedy makes the most of its unlikely criminals and a whole villageful of quirky characters.

(Please note that the Village Hall is strictly no smoking)

Snape W. I.

The AGM in November was very well attended indeed and the individual tables, dressed with gold coloured table clothes, made by the W.I. President Gay Page, looked most attractive. As is usual at this meeting, wine and elderflower fizz were served with a selection of assorted nibbles.

During the initial business part of the evening, our Group Convener Jan Rodgers spoke about the recent successful Group meeting held at Snape Village Hall; she then explained in more detail about the membership and organisation of the Group 9 Institutes. Sue Partington read a resume of the past year's meetings with reports on the Book Club, the Knit & Natter Group and the Rambling Group. Mention was also made of the Community event at Snape Fun Day, the Annual Bumper Sale, the Coffee mornings and Soup lunches, the Theatre visit and River trip and the money donated to Snape Playing Field, Snape School, First Responders and the British Legion.

A new committee was then elected comprising of Gay Page (President) with committee members, Sue Mercer, Lavinia Fuller, Jane Hudson, Victoria Hambley, Joyce Devonshire, Brenda Frost, Liz Anderson, Brenda McConkey, and Di Hinves. Bottles of pink Cava were then presented to long serving retirees from the committee.

After glasses had been refilled, 'Question Master' Chris Scott and his wife Maggie were welcomed; they had set members a fun quiz, which brought forth many comments of “we should know this” together with a great deal of hilarity. The final result was a tiebreaker finish between two teams. Chocolates were kindly shared by the two teams, with wooden spoons going to the 'winners' of the booby prize

Some really lovely prizes were then won in the raffle organised as usual by Sue Mercer, and a big thank you must also go to Julyan Heazell for bringing members the large basket of mushrooms, freshly picked that morning from her field, together with some quinces for jelly making.

The Christmas Party Meeting is on Wednesday 7th December with some super entertainment, delicious eats and wine, a special festive raffle, singing Christmas carols, and a Yankee Gift Swop from Santa too! On Wednesday 14th December the W.I. Christmas Dinner will be held in the evening at The Crown Inn, Snape.

Snape W.I. wishes you all a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Peaceful 2012.If you would like to join Snape W.I. you will be made most welcome, there is a membership of sixty-two, who are a lively, friendly and very supportive group.

Snape School Activities

One of the many advantages of small classes is that children can be taken out to learn in the community. Year 3 and year 5 children have enjoyed several visits to the Jamie Oliver kitchen at Orford. They use local produce to produce their own delicious lunches, learning many skills in the process.

Phoenix Class has made an impressive start to playing the violin, with the help of a tutor from the Suffolk Schools Music Service.

The children look forward to their Open the Book Assemblies. Once a fortnight, members of local churches visit the school to present bible stories in dramatic form and to sing with the youngsters. The stories are taken from The Lion Children's Bible. The costumes, scenery and props are very impressive and the children always respond enthusiastically. (See photos on back page)

Remembrance at Snape

Snape and Farnham Branch of the Royal British Legion were joined by a large congregation on Remembrance Sunday. The recent tidying of the vegetation on the edge of the churchyard enable the service at the War Memorial to be conducted in the churchyard rather than at the roadside.

Barrie’s Letter

The Alde River Benefice

The Rectory,Stratford St Andrew,Saxmundham,IP17 1LJ01728 [email protected]

Dear Friends,

One of the realities of writing these letters is that I am having to think forward in time; when you read this it will be early December and Christmas will be looming closer whereas I am only just out of Remembrance mode. Obviously Jesus has the starring role at Christmas, never before or since has God abandoned his power and position to be born as a human baby. Why would God do such a thing? Maybe he wants to be close to us and a baby is not a threat to powerful people, although Herod did feel threatened. Maybe a baby is not seen as coming with any sort of agenda or baggage, although his followers later wished to establish very clearly that he was a descendant of their great King David. Maybe as Mary's maternal instincts kicked in, the needs of her baby meant she had little time to ponder the strange events of Jesus' conception and her visits by angels.

Remember the birth did not take place in the comfort (such as it might be) of her own home with the support of the village ladies who would normally assist at a birth and with whom Mary would have been familiar. Rather the birth took place a long way from her home, at the end of a long tiring journey, in an outbuilding of a pub still occupied by cattle. Did the women of Bethlehem come to Mary's aid; the Bible doesn't mention any but then women tended not to get a mention until much later when Jesus seeks to acknowledge their position amongst his followers.

So why such an inauspicious birth ? Maybe God recognised that it was important for God to enter the world at the very bottom of the pile, the circumstances of Jesus' birth means that no one can claim that God is only concerned with people above them by wealth, circumstances or social standing – no, such a birth should make it clear that no one is beyond the reach of God's love.

So as we draw near to Christmas Day it's good to remember amongst all the hustle and bustle of preparation just how great a length God had to go through to show us how much he loves us and how close he wants to be to each of us, to be in that relationship of a parent and child. As we wrap presents for those we love, remember that God's gift of love came not beautifully wrapped but as a vulnerable baby. What should our response be to such a gift – embarrassment as we have not a present to give in return, perhaps we can find something and quickly wrap it up. This gift from God is not given in the expectation of a gift in return, almost the opposite, it is a giftwhich if received with enthusiasm and gratitude will be the start of a relationship in which we the beneficiaries continue to receive gifts from God on a continuous basis in this world and a home in his presence in the next. So this Christmas welcome with open arms God's gift of love.

Happy Christmas

Barrie

Little Glemham Lion Harvest Festival and Auction.

Once again the Lion inn hosted another successful evening in what has become a tradition at the pub going back a number of years.

The Rector Barrie Slatter conducted a Harvest service with customary hymns and prayers, this was followed by an auction of the huge amount of produce, cakes, pies and sundry items donated by many kind people from Little Glemham and beyond. Bidding at times was brisk with plenty of encouragement from the Auctioneer Stephen Bayfield in pushing the total raised to a magnificent £450, which will be used to help support the Village Church.

Avril and Adam who own the Lion Inn, generously, once again provided a lovely supper for everyone, so special thanks to them, and all those lovely people who gave, bought and attended and helped make the evening another Village triumph.

Great Glemham Village Archive

After 2 years of planning, design and making the Archive Cabinet is now in Great Glemham Church to the right of the main entrance into the church building. It still has a few minor jobs waiting to be done (locks upgraded and gas struts on the lid) but the main cabinet is now finished.

The Steering Group would like to thank Barry and the PCC for all their help in this venture which could not have taken place without their unstinting support.

We now feel that it is time to open up the group to form a working committee to organise and run the archive for the future use of the village community. To this end we are asking anyone who has an interest in the past history of the village and who would like to offer support and help with this great project to contact and join us to put forward their ideas.

We are also asking everyone in the village to donate anything that they have suitable for the archive. This can be records or photographs of the old premises in the village, records or photographs of village events and records or photographs of village residents. We are happy to copy these items and return the originals, or accept residents' copies. Please do remember that today's events are tomorrows archive. It is intended to have a rotating display in the top of the archive cabinet and this will be made up of donated items.

Tuesday Teas in Gt Glemham

Jason Gathorne-Hardy offered to hold Tuesday Teas (usually held in the village hall) at White House Farm on 18 October. So the word was spread, and lifts offered, and cakes were baked. The result of which was a splendid tea in the lovely surroundings of The Farmyard Barns where we all enjoyed the Autumn exhibition of new and recent work by Norfolk-born photographer Justin Partyka that adorned the walls. There was also an added treat of viewing some recently re-discovered Gathorne-Hardy family photos taken by Robert Gathorne-Hardy and Anne Hill, of the village and estate in the 1920s, showing on Jason’s computer. Our thanks go to Jason for the invitation, and as a thank you we left him a choice of cakes (that he tells us lasted him for over a week!). We all enjoyed ourselves immensely and he has promised us a return visit in the Spring.

Local History

Moore's Yard, Bigsby's Corner, Benhall

Moore's Yard is situated on the left hand side of the road, just before the bend on the old A12 as you leave Benhall travelling towards Saxmundham. It was started in 1921 by William Moore Senior as an Agricultural Contracting business, using steam thrashing engines, traction engines and haulage lorries and the machinery was fabricated, maintained and stored on the site. The photograph was taken on 25th May 1934 and shows the Marshall & Son's thrashing tackle that belonged to the Moore's; and five men - can you identify any of them? Powering the thrashing tackle is a Garret no.4 Compound Superheater tractor with piston valves, registered new on the 17th June 1914. The scene shows the semi-detached houses which are still present, just next to the road. By the 1970's the business had expanded, with some 25 emloyees, who carried out the agricultural work, drove the 18 haulage lorries and fabricated, repaired and maintained the machinery, which included combine harvesters & tractors. The site was in use 7 days a week, hauling for Birds Eye Peas, sugar beet, chalk spreading, general

The Trust puts the 16 communities along the Lake Niassa/Malawi shoreline at the heart of all its activities, with representatives of the 20,000 local people deciding what projects to pursue and contributing both labour and materials.

Supported by the Trust but led by the people themselves, an Association called UMOJI (meaning 'as one') has been created, with one elected member from each village. The Association helps draw attention to a previously neglected area, and gives its members a unique platform to share their views.

Glemham Hall Visit

On a lovely sunny day in September 2011 the Blaxhall Archive Group visited Glemham Hall. We were met on the front driveway by Major Philip Hope-Cobbold and here he gave us an introductory talk about the history of the estate. We then went inside to view the many rooms both upstairs and downstairs.

Several young local girls worked there when they left school, as did one of our group Mrs Ena Plant over 60 years ago. She was able to tell us about her experiences there as a member of the staff and Major Philip Hope-Cobbold gave us many very amusing anecdotes about life at the Hall.

We really enjoyed seeing the attic bedrooms where the servants slept and we even saw a room full of chamber pots.

We looked around the gardens by which time we were ready for a cup of tea and cake served by our host.

We recommend a visit its well worth it. Contact Glemham Hall and Gardens – “Invitation to View” – www.invitationtoview.co.uk Tel 01296 573948 (booking Line)

A Request From the Editor

With our growing popularity the E&F inbox often receives100 or more emails per month, many of them with a subject line ‘article for ebb & flow’. In order to make our life a little bit easier it would be helpful if you could put a few more details - especially village name and desired publication month. Hopefully that will help is fit as much in as possible and not miss anything important! Many thanks, Ed.
