Benhall Open Gardens - 9th and 10th June 2012

Benhall Open Gardens will take place on the weekend of 9th and 10th June 2012 in aid of Benhall Church. Opening times will be noon until 5.00pm. The variety of gardens which will be on view is excellent and will give lots of inspiration for both novice and experienced gardeners. On Saturday 9th June, 13 gardens in Benhall Green will be open for viewing. Entry to the gardens will be by ticket and visitors will be issued with a programme showing where each open garden can be found; a description of each; and the location of other facilities, such as toilets and refreshments. The main parking area will be at Benhall Club, but there will be other areas available, for those who do not wish to visit all the properties on foot. These will also be shown on the programme, and helpers on the day will also be able to direct you and give advice. Refreshments on the day will be on the village green; together with a plant stall. On Sunday 10th June, 6 gardens will be open in the Silverlace Green/Benhall Low Street area. This may sound a small number compared to the previous day, but included in the six, are several very large gardens which will take quite a while to view. A plant stall will be located at 'Woodside'; and refreshments will be available at the Walled Garden nursery. Parking will also be available at the Walled Garden and each of the six properties. Again, the programme will give full details and directions.Tickets/programmes priced at £5 per day (£9 for both days) will be available beforehand from the Walled Garden and the Railway Farm Shop – but will also be on sale on the day from outside Benhall School (for Benhall Green); and outside 'Ramblers' (for Benhall Low Street and Silverlace Green). For those who do not wish to view the gardens, please do join us for refreshments each day - and hopefully also buy some plants from the plant stall!A big thank you to all those who have already come forward so far with offers of help. June Sampson would still be very pleased to hear from any others who would be willing to bake cakes and help with refreshments –

Cuttings from the Walled Garden: Jim Mountain

The Walled Garden. Celebrating 25 years as a retail nursery.

The Walled Garden, originally a two acre kitchen garden built in the early 1800s to provide fresh produce for Benhall Lodge, is this year celebrating the 25th anniversary of its opening as a retail nursery. It's outstanding feature is a wall made up of 300,000 red bricks. Thousands of nail holes in the walls show where fruit trees once grew. Remnants of whitewash on the bricks show where greenhouses once stood. A fig tree near to the east wall shows where a fig house used to be. Coke, brought by horse and cart from Saxmundham railway station, was used in three boilers to heat the greenhouses. 4” cast iron pipes moved the hot water around. Rainwater collected in tanks along the middle wall, transferred to galvanised water tanks inside the greenhouses and warmed by being above ground, was used to spray peach trees in the early morning. Rainwater from the tanks was bucketed and used to water vine roots. Water for the garden was pumped from the pond or from the north end of the garden from a pond by the road. Soil dug from the estate and used for plants grown in pots was delivered to the garden as turves stacked 2-3ft high and layered with pig muck and more turf until a great pile was built. Pigs were also kept in the car park. After the first world war the nursery supplied soft fruit to the local area and bedding plants to outlets such as Woolworth's in Great Yarmouth. When George Storey began working at the garden in 1926, wages were 35 shillings a week. Mushrooms and rhubarb were grown in a heated, windowless 'dark house' in the middle of the garden and salads grown in beds near to the drive. Produce taken to Thorpeness and Aldeburgh by pony and cart was sold to residents and hotels and in later years sold from the back of a van on Saturday mornings around Benhall Green. After the second world war, the nursery was used by Jimmy Fraser for the growing of cut flower chrysanthemums which were sold at Covent Garden. Lettuce were also grown. After he retired the site was empty for a while before Jim and Marion Mountain acquired the lease in 1987. They had previously had a small holding at Newbourne where they grew salad crops before moving to Snape Maltings. There, they set up the Farm and Garden Shop.

Two weeks after signing the lease, the 1987 hurricane flattened the outbuildings, collapsed part of the wall and disintegrated the glasshouse. After months of clearing weeds and debris, the nursery opened for business. The site was divided into a retail area, growing area and ornamental garden. An irrigation system and electricity supply was installed and container beds, polytunnels, glasshouses, shop, office and mess room built. In 1992 Jim and Marion bought the nursery outright. The wall was repaired and topped with new copings from Reades. The garden was created, the pond and pergola constructed, yew hedges planted and paths laid. In September 1995 work started on building the house and was completed in August 1996. Throughout this time Jim and Marion lived in a caravan on the nursery. In 2002 an 880 square metre computerised heating and ventilation controlled glasshouse was erected. The Walled Garden is now a successful retail nursery specialising in plants suitable for the comparatively dry, mostly alkaline soils of East Anglia. Garden furniture, terracotta pots, annual and vegetable plants, growing sundries and composts are also sold. The gardens are mature shrub and herbaceous borders. A wisteria walk leads to the central fish pond where the popular Walled Garden Teas, now in their fourth year, are held.

A forlorn and overgrown site before many months of work clearing undergrowth and repairing buildings

Local History & Characters

Haunted History

Anyone with an interest in local ghost stories and a strong nerve might be tempted to pay a night time visit to Potsford Wood, between Wickham Market and Letheringham. If you’re brave enough to do so you’ll be greeted by the reputedly haunted crumbling remains of Potsford Gibbet, now little more than a single oak stump, perhaps 350 or more years old.

On Tuesday the 14th of April 1699 Jonas Snell became the last victim of this gruesome device and one of the last in the county. Gibbetting was outlawed altogether in 1834.

Jonas had been accused, and found guilty, of murdering his master John Bullard, and his son, with a maul (heavy hammer) whilst in his employ at Letheringham Mill - a crime motivated partly by theft and encouraged by alcohol, but reading Snell’s statement from the time there have also to be questions over his sanity. Not only did the double murder seem largely pointless and unnecessarily brutal, but Snell even wrote a colourful poem recounting the events whilst in Bury gaol in which he described himself as led by Satan.

He was hanged on Wickham Market gallows - a couple of hundred yards south west of the current roundabout - and from there dragged in chains through the town to the gibbet, the location of which at the time was a busy crossroads. It is said the skeleton remained for many years and even that birds built their nests in the poor fellow’s skull.

That would be the end of the story, except there are those who say Jonas remains there still ...

E&F would love to receive more old photos, stories, history from across the benefice, so please email us if you have something we could feature.

Village History Walk

By popular demand the Benhall and Sternfield History Group is “running” another local history walk. The Walk will take place on Saturday 14th April, beginning outside the front of Benhall St Mary's School at 10.00am and ending for lunch at 29, Benhall Green, on the way to the Ford. The total cost will be £5 and will include very good homemade soup and roll, followed by apple pie.We are setting off slightly earlier this time because we plan to walk up the street across the B1121, along Gray's Lane and across the Bypass to Benhall Church and back.

Do telephone to book so that we can arrange the catering. 01728 602563

We look forward to seeing you on the day.

Snape News

Snape W. I.

For our March meeting, Melissa Billen of MBD Interiors arrived with armloads of the latest fabric and wallpaper pattern books to get us inspired for the evening's presentation. Melissa also brought along some of the beautiful mood boards and sample boards that she had prepared for past projects together with photographs of the completed interiors. Entitled '1 Room - 5 Easy Steps', Melissa's talk, which was part slideshow, part interactive, showed us how to tackle the re-decoration of a room the professional way. She explained the key stages of the design process from putting together a brief through to realisation and, for those of us not adept at using a scale ruler, showed us how to draw up a room using graph paper. This inspiring and informative talk made clear the importance of understanding the space in order to maximize its potential as well as avoiding costly mistakes such as ordering the wrong size sofa. Our thanks to Melissa for a very enjoyable evening, and to her assistants, Geraldine and Leah, who came along to help.

At our meeting on 4th April, Ann Edwards will be speaking about the work of the John Innes Institute, the world-renowned soil science research centre, which this year is celebrating its 100th year. John Innes looks at how the environment affects what we grow and eat. They have led the way in developing disease resistance in food crops and will be introducing a new variety of broccoli as an ultra-super superfood. Purple tomatoes, anyone?

Spring is in the air which reminds us that our annual jumble sale is approaching. This year's sale will be on Saturday 21st April from 10.00 -12.00 noon. Please bring clothes, bric-a-brac, toys, plants and garden produce, cakes and preserves. We also need extra help on the day.

The Group 9 Meeting on Thursday 26th April at 7.30 p.m. will be a talk by Bill Baston entitled 'Birds of East Anglia'. This will be held at Kelsale Village Hall; a timely reminder of the wealth of wildlife we enjoy here, especially during these lovely Spring days.

Snape Annual Parish Meeting

This will take place on Thursday 19 April, 7.00 for 7.30pm (tea & coffee will be served), in Snape Village Hall. Our guest speakers this year will include the RSPB to give an update on the newly developed site at Botany Farm, Farnham and an update on the site at Abbey Farm, Snape. Also from the Emergency Planners, who will enlighten us on how our community should act in the event of an emergency and this may not necessarily be flooding!

Snape Golden Jubilee Celebrations - some village residents are keen to mark the event, if you have any ideas/suggestion or would like to be involved with organising an event for the Golden Jubilee weekend period then please bring them along to the meeting.Snape Playing Field Committee - some key members of the committee have been lost this year, bringing the number on the committee down to 5. New members are desperately needed to help us keep going and to ensure that a play area is continued to be provided for the children. We are particullary keen to involve parents of children who use the playing field as they are not currently represented on the committee, however any one is welcome on the committee. It is not an onerous task, we meet every 6 or 8 weeks for about one and a half hours.

Please do come along to the Annual Parish Meeting to find out more or ring Melanie Thurston 01728 688849 for further info or come along to the next Playing Field Meeting which takes place on Thursday, 26 April, 7.30pm in the village hall.

Brian Boulton will have a selection of his photographs on display.

Barrie’s Letter

The Rectory,Stratford St Andrew,Saxmundham,IP17 1LJ01728 [email protected]

Dear Friends,

The first week of April this year coincides with Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday on the first and ending with Easter. Ironically this also means moving from All Fools Day to Easter. The events we remember in these eight days encapsulate the whole range of human emotions. On Palm Sunday we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Why did the crowds celebrate; it was only in part the miracles that they had witnessed or had heard of from others; it was probably more from what they hoped and expected Jesus was going to do . The Jews wanted a King who would free them from the Roman occupation and make them a free nation again.

Just like the Jews many of us crave for a God who will come in and at a stroke put the world to right. Instant transformations make good television (some of us are old enough to remember “Challenge Anika”) but if they do not deal with the underlying causes they tend not to last.

As the events of Holy Week unfold Jesus tries to prepare his disciples for the hard task that lies ahead of them. They fail to understand this as they continue to think the unthinkable. The leadership of the Jews are fearful of Jesus, not because he threatens to lead a revolt against them, although that may not seem to fanciful when they witness him driving all the traders and money changers out of the temple, but because much as they hate the Roman occupation they fear that any revolt will lead to a clamp down by the Romans and they will loose what power they have. This is similar to the situation in Syria today – we may not like the regime but if it goes will the situation be better or worse ?.When Jesus is taken to Pontius Pilate we see incomprehension but also fear and weakness. As the crowds turn on Jesus as he carries his cross to the place of execution and as they mock him as he dies, is it resentment that he did not deliver what they wanted him to do or contempt at a fallen leader ?

We witness the despair and bewilderment of the Disciples despite that Jesus had tried to prepare them for all this. Then on Easter morning we witness the love of the women who go to the tomb to perform the last acts of kindness , to do what seemed right in the circumstances, however little it might be.Then they find the empty tomb and meet the Risen Jesus and this is just a step too far for them to take in and understand immediately. The Disciples, equally find it hard to understand that despite all the events of the week, the expectations, the disappointments, the rejection, the failure, the pain, the anguish and the despair, the ultimate triumph was God's declaration that nothing this world can do , however bad, can separate us from God's love.

So even if you start of feeling an April Fool, live and celebrate Holy Week and rejoice in the triumph of Easter.

Barrie

Daffodil Show

The Benhall Daffodil Show was held on Saturday 17th March in Benhall Club and although the entries were down from last year's record level there was a wonderful display of daffodils inside from the 117 entries in the show. The children from Benhall School had also entered pictures for the colouring competition and taken part in the flower arrangement competition designed for them.

There was a steady stream of visitors to the show and by 12 noon the room was crowded. The ladies serving the lunches were kept on their toes with a backlog of orders and for the first time ever the salad and baked potatoes ran out! The stalls and the raffles were very well supported. The sum of £833 was raised for church funds. Many thanks to all our visitors to the show who spent so generously and for all those who helped before, during and after the show to make the day a huge success.

The winners in the show were as follows:=

WINNER OF THE CUP FOR THE ARRANGEMENT CLASS

Marie and Keira Nunn

WINNER OF THE CUP FOR MOST POINTS IN THE SHOW

Gregor Robbins

WINNER OF THE FRIEND CUP

(Children's Painting Competition) Maddie Ayres

There was also a new cup presented this year for a children's competition of ‘Flowers in a glass jar’ and the winner was Matthew Caley

Well done to everyone who participated.

Snape Choral Evensong – 29th April at 18.30

The next evensong will be centred on the theme of the Good Shepherd. It is surprising how many wonderful pieces of music and poetry have been written on this theme, one of the first being Psalm 23 – “The Lord's my Shepherd, I’ll not want”.

The Alde River Singers, led by Bill Gloyn and accompanied by Victor Scott, will be delighted to welcome any new faces, and voices, to our rehearsal at 16.00 at Snape Church. We will then have tea at Snape House before the service at 18.30 – kindly hosted by Kitty Waddell.

For Singers and congregation alike, these evensongs - now held for over five years - are times of great joy. It is a marvellous opportunity to reflect on the language of the 1662 prayer book, now 350 years old, and enjoy hearing and singing some of the music that those words have inspired.

The Singers are made up of local and visiting friends - some of whom come from long distances to be with us, Do come and join them – as a singer or in the congregation.

We would love to see you there.

Please contact Kitty or Barry for more information.

“POETRY AND SONG”An Exhibition by the Heritage QuiltersSaturday and Sunday 19th and 20th May 10am-4pm

Proceeds to EACH – The East Anglian Children's HospicesAdmission: £2.00 (accompanied children free)

It hardly seems possible that it is three years since Heritage Quilters held their last very successful exhibition, but in the interim they have not been wasting time. When you walk into the hall we are sure you will be dazzled and thrilled by explosion of colour and shape that will greet you.

This year the space will be filled with inspirational quilts, wall hangings and textile art, all on the theme “Poetry and Song” and we think you will be surprised at how varied our interpretation of this theme is.

We will also have on display items made by our younger members, and we are sure that like us you will be amazed not only by their enthusiasm but also their skill. Unfortunately they can only join us at school holidays, but they are an important part of our group.

There will be a draw for a selection of cushions and bags as prizes, all made by the members. Delicious cakes and other homemade refreshments will be served all day and there will be a sale table with books and fabrics to tempt you. Demonstrations will also take place throughout the two days.

Fundraising News from Benhall Preschool

PAST EVENTSAs you are aware Benhall Preschool is raising money for a new building due to our current one becoming very costly to maintain and are doing this by organising lots of different fundraising events and asking for support from the local area which had an amazing turn out. Firstly we would like to thank Babs Maycock for organising a extremely successful jumble sale and raising an amazing £570 for our new building, the event was held the Riverside Centre at the end of February. We would also like to thank the many people who attended the event as well as those who donated jumble. We would also like to take this time to thank the following people for donating to the preschool: Mr and Mrs Boast, Angela Nichols and Marian Woods.

UPCOMING EVENTSOn March the 31st The Preschool are doing more fundraising by hosting an Easter Egg Hunt with Eggs kindly donated from Waitrose. We will let you know how this goes in Aprils addition along with news on our Easter cake stall week commencing on 26th March.

Making the Most of Our Local Seasonal Produce - April

It's impossible not to notice that blossom and spring bulbs are now bursting into colour in gardens, fields and hedgerows. So what besides lighter evenings, showers and glorious spring sunshine does the month of April have in store for us? Cuckoos and swallows are now returning to enjoy our warmer weather and we are also beginning to venture out to enjoy our gardens in their full glory again. Easter also falls in April this year meaning a time to indulge in toasted hot crossed buns and deliciously fruity Simnel cake. As we are still very much in the midst of the hungry gap our local seasonal produce is still fairly sparse. Nevertheless we are still able to make the best of the available produce by using new ideas and recipes to add a touch of difference.

So what's the pick of the crop for this month? Our seasonal best for April includes:

Kale, Spring Greens, Spinach and Rhubarb.

Kale

Curly kale is not usually on the top of one's shopping list. It's a well known and well avoided brassica that is treated almost always in the same way as cabbage and either steamed or boiled. You can liven up this very tasty vegetable by frying gently in smoked rape seed oil (The Artisan Smokehouse, regulars at Snape Farmer's Market, have a very good smoked oil), add garlic and a little chilli if you are feeling brave and stir it into warm pasta or rice. This side dish is wonderful served with chicken or fish.

Kale can also be enjoyed fried with butter and a clove of chopped garlic or if you're feeling really adventurous try substituting it for basil for a super rich and wholesome pesto sauce.

Spring Greens

Spring greens are a firm favourite in our household. These fresh and sweet tasting leaves need nothing more than steaming and copious amounts of butter to be utterly delicious.

For a break from the norm you can add a handful of chopped spring greens to stir-frys. Better still fry some crushed garlic, locally grown onions and mushrooms in butter and add a few handfuls of chopped spring greens once the mushrooms and onions have softened. Stir until the greens are wilted, season well and serve topped with crumbled goat's cheese.

Spinach

Our soup recipe of the moment includes a healthy helping of iron rich spinach. Broccoli and spinach soup is rich in nutrition, low in fat and surprisingly more-ish. This very quick and easy recipe is ideal for a satisfying lunch or supper:

Fry two locally grown onions in rapeseed oil in a large sized saucepan until they are opaque. Add 400ml of vegetable stock. Next add a large head of broccoli florets (the calabrese variety is best). The stem can go in too if chopped. Add roughly six handfuls of spinach (do this a bit at a time and add a little more boiling water if necessary at this point to wilt the spinach down). Once everything is boiled and soft add approximately 200ml of the milk of your choice and half a tub of soft cheese. Stir all together until the ingredients are combined, puree with a hand blender and season to taste.

Other favourite recipes that use spinach are spinach and cheese pancakes and spinach bhaji (the English version!). For the spinach pancakes make the pancake batter for savoury pancakes as usual. Meanwhile fry onions, garlic and spinach until the spinach is wilted (this usually uses far more spinach than you think you'll need). Once the pancake is lightly golden both sides, add two heaped tablespoons of the spinach mix on to the middle of the pancake (in a line), grate on a generous helping of cheddar cheese, fold the pancake sides over the mixture and gently heat until the cheese is nicely melted and gooey inside. Serve immediately with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Our flavoursome spinach bhaji is a very simple side dish. It can be served with many meals but is particularly good with curry. Simply fry two locally grown onions and a clove of chopped garlic in rapeseed oil until the onions are soft and golden. Add a pinch of cumin seeds and stir. Add at least six handfuls of chopped locally grown spinach. Fry this mixture until the spinach has completely wilted down. For a spicy version add a pinch of chopped red chilli (with or without seeds, dependant on how hot you like it).

Rhubarb

Lovely ruby stems of Rhubarb start to make a re-appearance during April. This wonderful vegetable (commonly known as a fruit) is most popular used in crumble. For a healthy and delicious alternative to your standard crumble try adding oats to your topping. You can rub these into the flour, butter and sugar before sprinkling on top of the stewed rhubarb and baking it in the oven. You can also use muesli as a topping (the low or no sugar varieties are best). Substitute two thirds of your flour for muesli and rub in with a generous amount of butter and a good helping of sugar. The stewed rhubarb is also delicious added to plain yogurt, on ice-cream, rice pudding

Apache Approach

Apache Approach is a fundraising event in recognition of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces in present day conflicts. The event will take place on Saturday 28th April 2012 within the beautiful grounds of Framlingham College with a backdrop of the Mere & historic 12th century Framlingham Castle. Within the grounds the stage will be set with military activities & displays, including a military band. At 2 pm an Apache helicopter will fly in & land.

For those of you who have seen these aircraft carrying out their training activities in the skies of Suffolk this will be an opportunity to see the Apache at close quarters. Air & Ground crew of the Army Air Corps, based at Wattisham here in Suffolk, will be on hand to demonstrate their equipment & answer questions from members of the public. .

Wattisham Station Commander Colonel Neale Moss said: “This is a chance for Wattisham to engage with local people, who give us such fantastic support, & do what we can to help raise money for military charities. It is important that we give something back to the community, who put up with our noisy flying night & day. We can show the public a little bit of the fantastic kit we have & what we can do with it”.

There will be representatives from Help for Heroes, Combat Stress, Walking with the Wounded & The Afghan Appeal Fund who will be able to describe in detail how they support our servicemen & women in times of need.

Admission will be free of charge, although donations for the above charities will be gratefully received. Do come & support this important fundraising & awareness day in support of our troops & enjoy an informative & fun afternoon.

Members of the public are invited to attend from 1 pm when the Car Parks will be open. The Apache will depart at 4 pm which will mark the end of the event.

Life on Snape Marshes - Spring 2012

This just has to be the best time of year on our local SWT reserve. The days are getting longer, the weather improving - although we had very little proper winter weather - the birds are singing and the vegetation is growing fast in advance of the cattle arriving to graze it from the end of April.

The numerous snipe will soon be heading off to their breeding grounds. Although we'd love them to stay, the days of snipe as a breeding bird in Suffolk seem to be at an end - temporarily we hope. Despite this, we still have numerous other bird species to enjoy. Resident species such as meadow pipit, Cetti's warbler, barn owl, marsh harrier, kestrel and mute swan are very soon to be joined by summer visitors such as reed and sedge warbler, nightingale, turtle dove, cuckoo and whitethroat. An exciting visitor in the form of a hen harrier came to the marsh for a day in early January and we live in hope that we'll see it again before the summer.

The marsh has now been grazed for three years after a gap of 22 years, so we're also looking forward with interest to see what new plant species will emerge as a result.

Work parties have been going on throughout the winter and we now have an excellent group of volunteers keen to help improve the reserve. The new fence at the top of the marsh will be finished for when the cattle arrive. We've also cleared out the pond that we dug last year and it was full of life, with water boatman, pond skater, whirligig beetle, several frogs and our star find, a great diving beetle, which is big enough to eat sticklebacks. We also recently saw an adder which had clearly just emerged from hibernation. So although it has been hard work, in all sorts of conditions, it has been satisfying to see the results and the wildlife for which we're doing it all.

Women’s Fellowship

OnThe meeting on 6th March was very well attended and the ladies enjoyed a presentation by David Boulton entitled “Images of Norfolk” which he had set to music. David is a full time photographer and took the members on a journey from his home just outside Norwich up to and around the Norfolk coast and back. The journey included photographs of the Bure Valley railway, Norfolk Broads where there are now only seven wherries in operation. Blickling Hall with its wonderful garden and grounds. Upton Fen with its bluebelll woods and rare Emperor dragonflies and swallowtail butteflies. Walsingham Abbey and its snowdrop gardens, the deer at Holkham Hall. Ranworth church which is known as the Cathedral of the Broads and East Somerton church ruins. There are 650 medieval churches in Norfolk which is the most in any county in England. Photographs of the seals and birds at Blakeney Point and many other wonderful sights of the county. It was an entertaining and informative evening.

The meeting on Tuesday 3rd April is a talk by Nahida Goodchild - “What a pickle” with chutneys and Indian scarves to buy. If you have not already paid your subscription of £8 please bring this along on the evening.

The Royal British Legion (RBL) – Snape and Farnham Branch.

March Meeting.

A very good attendance heard about forthcoming RBL events around Suffolk and in particular details of:-

“Poppy Lottery Fundraising on the Doorstep”. This initiative, which began over a year ago, involves 13 professional fundraisers, wearing branded RBL clothing and with official identification, visiting homes in specified areas of the UK (and now including local postcodes). Householders are asked to join by completing a weekly direct debit of £1 with an option to play for 13, 26 or 52 weeks.Players can win up to £2,000 every week and there are bigger draws quarterly and annually, with first prizes of £15,000 and £25,000 respectively.

Although the lottery allows the Legion to raise vital funds for its service and ex-service community it is completely separate from the national Poppy Appeal in November.
