hEY, nEwBIE!WE mEAN THAT ENDEARINGLY. SERIOUSLY. Ifyou’renewtoEauClaireandthat’samazingbecausethistownhasalottooffer.Andit’sagoodthingyou’rereadingthis,becausewe’regonnahelpyoufindoutforyourself.

SOmE PEOPLE AROUND EAU CLAIREliketocomplainthatcollegestudentsnevergetoffcampus.Theyneverreallyseethecity.Theyneverfullyappreciatewhat’sgoingonhere.They’rebasi-callyself-absorbedtoddlers,andthey justdon’tcare about the hard-working, creative peoplewhobuildthistownintosomethinggreat.

Butweknowthat’snottrue.OK, it’s kinda true. I mean,

there’s always a few weird globsof unfinished Gummi Bear stucktothebottomofeverybag,right?Nobody’s perfect. I’ve definitelycomeacrossacertainkindofper-sonwhojustdoesn’tknowhowtoliveinacity.Youknowthetype–theystick to their routines.Theykeep their heads down. Theyrarelyexplore.

On thesurface, thesepeoplemight even seem to be outgoingandengaged,butattheendoftheday, between the couch, classes,andbed, there’sonlyahandfulofplacestheyac-tuallygo.Theymighthitacertainrestaurantafewtimesamonth,acertainbareveryweek,acertainbiketrail,butthat’saboutit.

Butthankfully,thesekindsofpeoplearefewerandfewer.

IgraduatedfromUW-EauClaireandI’vebeenliving and working in this town ever since. In thattime,someofthemostpassionatepeopleI’veevermethavebeenstudents– studentswillingtogetoutofthedormroomandoutoftheirrentalunittotry

somethingnewandseesomethingdifferent.Maybe“willingtogetout”isn’ttherightbunchof

words.Thesearepeoplewhoneedtogetoutandreallyseewhat’sgoingon.Andwhenseeingwhat’shappeningaroundherejustdoesn’tcutitanymore,theystartingmakingthingshappen.

EauClaireisasweetspot.Overtheyears,I’vecome to understand that it’sfilledwiththerightkindofstuffto create almost anything youwant.It’sbigenoughtoofferyouavarietyofresources andarealaudience, yet it’s small enoughthat you won’t get lost in thenoise.People liveherefor theirentire lives without ever reallygettingthatconcept.

Foryears,a lotofgreatindi-viduals have worked very hardto build this place. We’ve gotmusic and art and food and ahugepileofthingstodooutside.It’salwayschanging,and it’snot

perfect,buthowboringis“perfect?”Acity’simper-fectionsusuallyprovideafoundationforthereallygoodstuff.Thisiswhereexcitingnewscenesflour-ishandthrive.Andthisiswhereyoucomein.

This town is a gift – it’s yours now. But like allgifts,it’snotmuchfununtilyougetupoffyourbuttanduseit.

fAMILIAR fACEsEAU CLAIRE HAS BEEN HOmE TO PLENTY OF HOUSEHOLD

NAmES AND ACCOmPLISHED INDIVIDUALS. Here’s just a sampling.

DEAR ABBY AND ANN LANDERSPaulinePhillips– orAbigailVanBurenasmost thenationknewher– andhertwinsisterEstherLederer– i.e.,AnnLanders– livedinEauClaireinthe1950s.ThepairofpioneeringadvicecolumnistswereborninIowa,butbothmovedtoWisconsinintheiradult-hood.PaulinePhillipsmarriedintothefamilyofL.E.Phillips, a great philanthropist who’s name gracesmanybuildingsinthecity.

One of the greatest men toeverplaybaseballgothisstartrighthereintown.HenryAar-on’sfirstprogigplayingbase-ball was for the Eau ClaireBearsin1952– thenpartoftheBoston (soon to be Milwau-kee,thenAtlanta)Braves’farmprogram.Hequicklymovedupandafteroneseasonwaspro-motedtoanotherteam.

Mostrecently, the founderofMenardswaslistedonForbesMagazine’s list of billionairesas the 57th richest person intheUnitedStatesofAmerica,with an estimated fortune of$7.5billiondollars.Yeah,witha“B.”Menardwasalreadybuild-ingrealestatewhileatUWECbeforefoundinghishome im-provementchainin1972.

Therenownedauthorhaswrit-tenahandfulofbooksandes-say collections on life in ruralWisconsin, his latest of which–  Visiting Tom –  ended up onthe New York Times’ Best-sellers List in 2013. Perry is aUWECgradandaregularper-former around the area, read-ingfromhiswritingsorplayingwithhisbandTheLongBeds.
