    Where hieves

    Break Through

    Matthew

    6:19

    When

    Jesus warned his

    d i s c i p l e s ,

    lay not up o r

yourselves treasures upon earth, where moths a nd rust

    corrupt a nd

    where

    thieves

    break thro ugh a nd t e a l , t

    ha d

    some mplications for missionary preparation.

    On

    recent

    t r i p to r a i s e support

    f o r

    our mission to

    England

    thieves

    broke

    into

    my a n and

    s t o l e

    my

    u i t c a s e ,

    briefcase

    a nd

    s u i t s .

    These

    were

    just things,by o mean s

treasures . I imagine there are some disappointed thieves

    in Indianapolis.

    However

    such

    a n

    event cann ot

    help

    but a f f e c t

    a per

    son. After the i n i t i a l

    dismay, then anger,

    came he sense

    of l o s s . I would look for something and t wouldn't be

    there. When

    I

    arrived

    home I realized I

    didn't

    have

    anything to c arry into

    the house a s

    I had

    done a undred

    times before.)

    I

    kept t e l l i n g myself tha t these were

    just

    things.

    I

    should

    not

    be too upset a t such a petty o s s . Then

    I e a l i z

    ed

    wh a t I

    was e e l i n g

    w a s a c t u a l l y

    missionary training.

    I

    missed the

    familiar.

    My amilia r suits

    weren't

    there so

    I

    was

    earing

    strange

    clothes

    that's

    what

    my

    amily

    c a l l e d them).

    My

    r i e f case, though

    a recent

    Christmas

    g i f t ,

    was lready becoming

    a amiliar

    and handy ool but

    now t was one.

    It was

    ot

    the things I

    missed

    but the familiarity of

    them.The

    comfort f

    the known.Then realized

    we

    ive

    in

    a

    orld

    where thieves

    do break

    through

    a nd s t e a l .

    It can

    be the t h i e f of

    disease,

    or broken r e l a t i o n s h i p s , or

    simply

    r e a l

    t h i e v e s . This s a world where nothing s

    s t a b l e ,

    secure

    or

    e t e r n a l .

    A

    missionary

    gives up

    the

    f a m i l i a r i n

    order to sha re

    the

    treasure of the

    gospel .

    T h a t i s

    a

    treasure

    that

    cannot be

    tolen.

    A
