EATON RAPIDS — At the May 25 Board of Education meeting, Eaton Rapids Super- intendent Bill DeFrance laid out a slightly rosier budget for next school year thanks to less severe state cuts and a lower figure for retiree insurance. The school district also has almost $423,000 in fed- eral funds left from the cur- rent year. The state budget has not yet been finalized, though, so it’s impossible to say exactly what will happen next year. “While we’re tickled that the state will have a budget soon, we still feel like money has been taken from K-12 funding,” DeFrance said, after the meeting. Predicated upon the loss of 50 students, the latest ver- sion of the district’s budget calls for laying off eight teachers a savings of $496,000. Closing Northwestern Elementary, a decision that officials have already approved, will save over $205,000. About $244,000 will come from the district’s fund balance, down from over $700,000 in the previous ver- sion. “We’re not in any hurry to vote on it,” said board member Theresa Platte of the budget, after the meet- ing. “We want to get the deficit down as low as pos- sible.” The district must have a balanced budget by June 30. Platte also said that the Early Childhood program will move to the Union Street Center next year, but it will still be run by dis- trict staff. There had been talk of turning the program over to the YMCA. Kindergartners will move to the Early Learning Center, second-graders to Lockwood, third-graders to Greyhound Intermediate and sixth-graders to the middle school. The survivors, 35 strong this year, wore their customary purple shirts because purple symbolizes all kinds of cancers. There were survivors of all ages. New this year were “blowing away cancer,” an exercise with soap bubbles, and a creative fundraising effort by Katie Cribley of It’s Your Hair salon that involved colorful feathers and other hair extensions. with Multiple Sclerosis?Pam was diagnosed with MS in 2001. Six

years later, she was faced with a miserable life ofdepression, fatigue, pain and bladder issues. Fearof needing a feeding tube, being wheelchair boundif not eventually bedbound and she was on 10prescription drugs and not one of them made thesymptoms go away.

In 2008, Pam was introduced to what is calledcellular nutrition. It was then she discovered howvery important diets affect our health. A startlingstatistic showed that about 85% of illnesses are dietrelated.

Within 6 months of changing Pam’s dietarylifestyle, her symptoms began to fade away. Sheno longer spent the day in bed watching the worldpass by her. The aches and pains subsided, thedepression vanished. She was once again able towalk without falling down. She quit choking on herfood. Life once again was worth living. – Pam Bullen

Every once in awhile, we have hada light go out or a

gauge malfunction on thedashboard of a car. We hada minivan in its older daysthat had the gas gaugemalfunction. I rememberthat my daughter wasfilling the car up every100 miles as she neverwanted to take the chanceof running out of gas.

Metrics have been apart of business forever. Iliken the value of metricsto all the data that you getwhen we have a physical. The metrics help us withhow healthy we are andwhere we need to changeour lifestyle.

We have all kinds ofmetrics for knowing howwell our students in schoolperform — grades onreport card, MEAP scoresand ACT scores of highschool students. From myperspective, the idea ofhaving a dashboard forschool performance isappropriate.

Why do I even bringthis up? Schools will havemoney tied to dashboardsstarting this fall.

Finding best practices in Eaton Rapids schoolsWe will also have money

tied to how we conduct ourbusiness of educating kids.Legislators call these bestpractices and have chosento define them for us. I cantell you though that EatonRapids Public Schools will

receive all funding that istied to best practices.

These best practices aretied directly to how wehave controlled our healthinsurance costs, if we havecompetitively bid ournoninstructional services,

showing a dashboard forour academics on our Website and partnering withother local school districts(we share our food servicedirector with Waverly).

We have tried to beresponsible with district

resources and it looks likeit will pay off as to wherewe stand with the gov-ernor’s new approach toschool funding.
