EATON RAPIDS — At theMay 25 Board of Educationmeeting,EatonRapidsSuper-intendent Bill DeFrance laidout a slightly rosier budgetfor next school year —thanks to less severe statecuts and a lower figure forretiree insurance.
The school district alsohas almost $423,000 in fed-eral funds left from the cur-rent year.
The state budget has notyet been finalized, though,so it’s impossible to sayexactly what will happennext year.
“While we’re tickled thatthe state will have a budgetsoon, we still feel like moneyhas been taken from K-12funding,” DeFrance said, after the meeting.
Predicated upon the lossof 50 students, the latest ver-sion of the district’s budgetcalls for laying off eightteachers — a savings of$496,000.
Closing NorthwesternElementary, a decision thatofficials have alreadyapproved, will save over$205,000.
About $244,000 will comefrom the district’s fundbalance, down from over$700,000 in the previous ver-sion.
“We’re not in any hurryto vote on it,” said boardmember Theresa Platte ofthe budget, after the meet-ing. “We want to get thedeficit down as low as pos-sible.”
The district must havea balanced budget by June30.
Platte also said that theEarly Childhood programwill move to the UnionStreet Center next year, butit will still be run by dis-trict staff. There had beentalk of turning the programover to the YMCA.
Kindergartners willmove to the Early LearningCenter, second-graders toLockwood, third-graders toGreyhound Intermediateand sixth-graders to themiddle school.

EATON RAPIDS — The theme forthis year’s Relay for Life was “TheColors of Cancer,” with the breastcancer team from the Consumers’Professional Credit Union deckedout in bright pink shirts to supporta colleague currently undergoingtreatment.
Their display was pretty eye-catching too, with brightly coloredbras, each with a cancer message, decorating their booth.
Altogether, 16 teamsparticipated.
The survivors, 35 strong thisyear, wore their customary purpleshirts because purple symbolizes allkinds of cancers.
There were survivors of all ages. This year’s honorary chairman, for instance, was 16-year-old CodyWilliams, a thyroid cancer survivor. Then there was Joan Chambers, celebrating 25 years of life aftercancer by walking laps with her son,Scott, and other family members.
Mayor Steven Platte set the tone of the event on Friday night bycongratulating Relay participantsfor raising over $492,000 in the lastten years in the fight against whatmany people believe to be the mostdreaded disease.
New this year were “blowingaway cancer,” an exercise with soapbubbles, and a creative fundraisingeffort by Katie Cribley of It’s YourHair salon that involved colorfulfeathers and other hair extensions.
Thirteen-year-old Diana Hudsonmade a very personal sacrifice inthe fight: the loss of her pony tail, about six inches of healthy, shinyhair that she donated to Locks forLove, a non-profit organization thatmakes hairpieces for disadvantagedchildren with hair loss.
Activities continued through the
night, with many families sleepingin campers and tents.
At noon on Saturday was the“Messages to Heaven” balloonrelease, followed by the ceremonyin which participants pledge to fightback in any way they can againstcancer.
Over all, 166 people joined in thisyear’s Relay, according AmericanCancer Society representativeMolly Day, with a fundraising goalof $36,000.
Donations are still beingaccepted at www.relayforlife.org/eatonrapids mi. Or you can maila check to the American CancerSociety, 1755 Abbey Rd., EastLansing, MI 48823, with EatonRapids Relay for Life in the memoline.

with Multiple Sclerosis?Pam was diagnosed with MS in 2001. Six
years later, she was faced with a miserable life ofdepression, fatigue, pain and bladder issues. Fearof needing a feeding tube, being wheelchair boundif not eventually bedbound and she was on 10prescription drugs and not one of them made thesymptoms go away.
In 2008, Pam was introduced to what is calledcellular nutrition. It was then she discovered howvery important diets affect our health. A startlingstatistic showed that about 85% of illnesses are dietrelated.
Within 6 months of changing Pam’s dietarylifestyle, her symptoms began to fade away. Sheno longer spent the day in bed watching the worldpass by her. The aches and pains subsided, thedepression vanished. She was once again able towalk without falling down. She quit choking on herfood. Life once again was worth living. – Pam Bullen

Every once in awhile, we have hada light go out or a
gauge malfunction on thedashboard of a car. We hada minivan in its older daysthat had the gas gaugemalfunction. I rememberthat my daughter wasfilling the car up every100 miles as she neverwanted to take the chanceof running out of gas.
Metrics have been apart of business forever. Iliken the value of metricsto all the data that you getwhen we have a physical. The metrics help us withhow healthy we are andwhere we need to changeour lifestyle.
We have all kinds ofmetrics for knowing howwell our students in schoolperform — grades onreport card, MEAP scoresand ACT scores of highschool students. From myperspective, the idea ofhaving a dashboard forschool performance isappropriate.
Why do I even bringthis up? Schools will havemoney tied to dashboardsstarting this fall.
Finding best practices in Eaton Rapids schoolsWe will also have money
tied to how we conduct ourbusiness of educating kids.Legislators call these bestpractices and have chosento define them for us. I cantell you though that EatonRapids Public Schools will
receive all funding that istied to best practices.
These best practices aretied directly to how wehave controlled our healthinsurance costs, if we havecompetitively bid ournoninstructional services,
showing a dashboard forour academics on our Website and partnering withother local school districts(we share our food servicedirector with Waverly).
We have tried to beresponsible with district
resources and it looks likeit will pay off as to wherewe stand with the gov-ernor’s new approach toschool funding.
