L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I T O RIt’s a fact that, today, everyone flies easyJet – in Europe and beyond. And, each year, the list of destinations we fly to continues to increase. That’s something that makes our job, producing easyJet Traveller, so very exciting, because it means there are just so many great stories to tell. Each month, we aim to reveal the people, places and trends our readers really need to know about. It could be a guide to Barcelona’s coolest district, a Hollywood celeb interview or something more leftfield, such as our recent report on the Dutch company attempting to send people to Mars before NASA. That’s why some of the best names in the business want to work with us – culinary wizards Bompas and Parr recently collaborated with us to produce the cover of our September food special – and why we’re in the running for some of the biggest magazine awards of 2015.

More places, more choices, more often – that’s the mantra for a new generation of globetrotter who wants to get there first, whether it’s discovering a new destination, unearthing a new restaurant or bar, or securing a new business venture. With its insider knowledge, stunning travel photography and award-winning design, easyJet Traveller is a manual for this 21st-century explorer.

Monthly news features and reviews, delivered by some of the best writers around, alongside a new business section, enable our 68 million annual passengers to become part of a vibrant pan-European community across 136 destinations. And each month the message of the magazine is clear: reading the pages is a first step to a world of new experiences.

f o r g e t t h e j o k e s about women drivers – as a senior exec at Ford, Barb Samardzich has heard them all – and, anyway, we’re all tired of them. However, while she is just one of a handful of high-ranking women in the motor industry, she’s working hard to remedy that situation. Rising to the top in such a traditionally male-oriented business does have its challenges, but it’s something she’s handled with aplomb. Her main tip, whoever you are, is: love what you do.

Th ere is always a solution“I’m an engineer by trade and I know that whatever challenge I’m presented with, there’s always a way around it – assuming you’re not trying to violate the laws of physics, of course. I fi nd this a comfort. However, there are two variables that you cannot change: time and money.”

Listen to your customers“I’m an American, and when I came to Europe over three and a half years ago, the fi rst auto show I went to was Geneva’s International Motor Show. When I met the press there, many of the journalists asked me: ‘When are you bringing the Mustang over to Europe?’ I didn’t quite understand where they were coming from at fi rst, but it became apparent that there was clearly a real need and desire for this car over here. So, we’re launching a right-hand drive version in 2015.”

Take care of yourself“You have to. In my job prior to this, I had a global position and went all over the world, all the time. If you didn’t pace yourself, it was exhausting. Once, I went to Frankfurt, checked into a hotel and went downstairs

to meet a colleague for dinner. As I was eating, I suddenly realised that I had absolutely no idea which room I was in or even what fl oor I was staying on. Nothing

– not a clue. I had to go back to the front desk and fi nd out all over again.”

Ask for help and support “I fi nd it incredibly helpful to use mentors who have ‘been there and done that’. This is my second tour of duty in Europe. My fi rst was when mychildren were young. That particular opportunity arose simultaneouslywith a promotion in the States and thepeople I was working for at the timeobviously weren’t keen on my leaving. It was an agonising decision, but I turnedto a mentor of mine. He said, ‘An international assignment can be a wonderful experience, both for you and

your family. The work stuff will sort itself out.’ I took his advice and he was right: it was a wonderful experience.”

Be aware of your responsibilities“I used to think, ‘Who would ever notice me?’, but I have a lot of young women coming up and saying that I inspired them to succeed in a male-dominated environment. As a woman in my position, I am a role model to many and it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. A lot of girls, when they’re 14 or so, steer away from science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but if they don’t continue down that path, they aren’t going to be engineers. I spend a lot of time campaigning to get young girls to continue with those particular subjects.”

Be extra diligent“Following on from my last point, there is a little extra pressure on me in my role. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a great, welcoming environment and I’m pleased to be here. However, if I say something stupid in a room with 10 guys, they’ll remember who said it. If one of the 10 guys says something stupid, chances are the rest of them won’t remember who it was.”

Love what you do“If you spend 40 hours a week doing a job you don’t like, you’re going to spend a lot of your life doing something you don’t have a passion for. I have no idea what else I could do [for a living] and, yes, there are challenges along the way, but it’s how you perceive them. I haven’t had a day where I’ve had nothing to do or no challenges to deal with – and that’s what gets my adrenaline pumping.” W

Decorated with an extensive,

colourful exhibition of street art and with a reputation for rebellion, the

Stokes Croft area, in Bristol’s Montpelier neighbourhood, might not be the obvious choice for fi ne dining, but its cafés and bars are leading the way for clean and green eating. And as the south-west city revels in its role as European Green Capital 2015, there’s never been a better time to sample some of the area’s guilt-free eating...

BELL’S DINER & BAR ROOMS1-3 York RoadOn an unassuming corner of Montpelier, Bell’s Diner quietly brandishes one of the fi nest menus in the city. The fact that it’s written on recycled paper gives away its green credentials. “Our meat comes from local Gloucestershire farms, our eggs from North Somerset and we even get some fruit and veg straight from customers’ allotments,” says duty manager Gillian McKenzie (pictured). Most months feature a special Sunday event, with daytime music and a themed menu based around seasonal celebrations – think Mother’s Day, Father’s Day – along with evening aff airs, such as wine tastings.bellsdiner.com

From the turquoise-fringed beaches to the cobalt church domes, there’s but one colour that really sums

up Greece’s Cyclades islands, but can they really be explored if you don’t have a whole summer to go ferry hopping? easyJet Traveller plots a mini-hop odyssey

tith its ludicrously clear waters lapping gently against the narrow spit of pebble beach and a pretty scattering of whitewashed houses on the hillside above, Karavostasi’s bay ticks every Greek-island-

escapist-fantasy box going. Th is may be the main port on Folegandros, but right here, right now, urban life feels a million miles away.

Th at idyll is shattered somewhat when, out of the blue, the sleek shape of a hydrofoil appears at the jetty and from its belly emerges a small line of passengers. Some are backpackers, as you’d expect in such a remote spot, but many are city-break types pulling trolley cases behind them. In just a short time, the vessel has continued on its way and the bay is calm again.

Th is is island hopping in the 21st century and it’s a heartening sight for anyone who thought they’d missed the boat. In days past, you needed a whole summer to explore the Cyclades. Starting in Athens, you’d circle this island group to the east of the Greek mainland on slow-moving ferries, a rucksack on your back, hopping off wherever took your fancy. Th ere’s something undeniably romantic about this experience, but it’s fair to say it was one best suited to the young or those who didn’t mind forgoing the usual mod cons.

Today, however, the seas are opening up to a new type of hopper. It’s thanks to two factors: regular high-speed ferries have transformed the amount of time you need to spend, and most of the islands now have excellent boutique hotels on them, so urban travellers aren’t forced to go without the wi-fi or crisp linen (just imagine!). It means that, with the right planning, it’s possible to jet directly into Mykonos or Santorini before heading off to more remote spots, and still be back home before you’re missed by your boss. Time, we say, for backpackers to move over.Turn the page for our proposed mini-hop itinerary

New York, New YorkThe Mountbatten Institute is off ering you the chance to boost your employment prospects while enjoying the work experience placement of a lifetime

how would you like to launch your international career with a year in the Big Apple? The Mountbatten Institute is the only organisation that provides young professional graduates with the opportunity to gain unrivalled work experience at the world's top employers in New York City. Participants of this unique 12-month programme spend one year living, working and studying in one of the world's most challenging corporate cultures, arming themselves with the skills necessary to top an increasingly competitive global labour market.

Around 250 trainees per year work at one of the world's top investment banks, media companies, law fi rms and corporations, including JP Morgan, Bank of America, Blackrock, Barclays, HSBC, Credit Suisse, UBS, Thomson Reuters, British Airways and Citi. Roles are available in banking and fi nance, marketing and communications, legal and compliance, human resources, project management and business operations. Meanwhile,

trainees complement their full-time work placement with one of three Masters or Postgraduate courses. Programme fees depend on which course of study you choose.

Fees include free accommodation, medical insurance and a $13,000 allowance, so they can make the most of their New York experience. The Mountbatten Institute also encourages cultural integration with a calendar of events for trainees that features museum visits, sports events, brunches, weekend trips, Sixth Avenue parades and more.

On return to their home country, a trainee's employment prospects are

outstanding: 86% are employed in very well-paid jobs within three months and all of them are employed within six.

More than a journeyExperience the breathtaking scenery of Switzerland in a whole new way,

through the panoramic windows of a GoldenPass Line train

a little over one hour from Geneva airport, you'll fi nd Montreux, in the heart of the Swiss Riviera. From here, three rail companies –GoldenPass MOB, BLS and the Zentralbahn, together making up the ‘GoldenPassLine’ – can take you on an enthralling railway adventure.

The ultra-modern trains are fi tted with specially designed panoramic windows, so the carriage almost disappears and you become part of the nature outside.

montreux - gstaad - zweisimmenLook down as the gold-and-white-trimmed GoldenPass Panoramic travels across the mountains above Montreux, and you'll see

Lake Geneva below, encircled by the Swiss and Savoyard Alps. Travelling smoothly on, the line then immerses you in the rich pastures of Pays d’Enhaut. Sitting in the large VIP seats in the front of the train, the traveller becomes a spectator, watching as the stations alternate between traditional and modern.

zweisimmen - spiez - interlaken ostCrossing the valley of Simmental gives you a glimpse of almost all of Switzerland in less than an hour: see ornate chalets, balconies covered in fl owers, cattle grazing in the meadows, and then the sparkling Lake Thun and its surrounding

towns Spiez and Interlaken, all at the foot of the snow-capped Bernese Alps.

interlaken ost - brünig - lucerneAs soon as you reach Meiringen, a town nestled in the valley below the Brünig Pass, the elegant carriages start to haul you up to the top of Brünig. Invest in Ibiza

Not just a beautiful holiday destination, the famed party island also presents a great

investment opportunity

overlooking the deep blue mediterranean Sea, on Ibiza's west coast, sits the 7Pines Resort. The great location, embedded among the hills, means guests get spectacular views over the coast and the nearby Es Vedra island.

But this resort isn't just available for short-term stays. Each unit can also be bought as an investment. When you buy property in this first-class, premium hotel you, as an owner, have access to all its luxury benefits, as well as the chance to generate attractive rental income

while you're away. Renting out your property is stress-free as it's managed and maintained entirely by the resort operator.

Once you've decided to invest in Ibiza's 7Pines Resort, you're free to stay for two weeks every summer, between May and October, and anytime during the rest of the year. Whenever you're not using your unit it will be rented out for you, to bring in extra income.

When it comes to choosing an investment property there are certain

factors that are integral to the decision, namely location, architecture and facilities. The 7Pines Resort has a beautiful location, overlooking the sea, as well as top-quality architecture, services and facilities. Choose between villas, hotel suites and hotel apartments to invest in – all options are surrounded by lush gardens. The luxury amenities and facilities come as standard across the resort, which combines the best of a holiday, with the highest potential for capital gains. 7pines-ibiza.com
