A Message From Our Community Lay Director

Volume 28 Number 5

May 2020 The Walk Way

Hello, are you there?

This newsletter article seems different. Life has sure

changed for most of us. It has caused time to be still and

think. We are forced to be still in the crazy world of non-

stop motion and activities. For some of us, we continue to

work. Others are laid off for a while for some these life

changes brought fear, others solitude, others precautionary measures.

Wherever you find yourself, have these changes made your life more

difficult or have you found relief from the hustle bustle? Do you feel

closer to God or does He seem farther away? I heard someone say that

we can fool ourselves thinking we are devout Christians because we are

involved with many ministries and Bible studies. We attend church

faithfully every Sunday. But we are not doing these things

because we have a heart for God, we are motivated because

of being social and doing what is perceived as the Godly right

things to do. During the last 2 months has your Bible study

remained the same, different or not at all? Do you attend church each

week or not at all? For some of us our churches offer online services.

Although thankful for modern technology, online just isn’t the same.

What all this means is, are we the same person no matter the circum-

stances? When life returns to normal, will life be normal again? I have

many questions, do you, too? Sandi and I have talked about all these

questions. For me, I have enjoyed the slower pace, and would like to

keep life slower, I am more of an introvert. Sandi is not liking the soli-

tude as she is much more social than me. One thing is for sure, we

miss our Emmaus family! We miss the community and the love this

community offers. We miss the singing and the prayer. The hugs and

the breaking of bread. WE miss all of you! I miss ALL of you! Will we

be able to get together this month or will we have to wait until June?

Still questioning the uncertainty of the future. Whatever the case,

know that you are in my prayer. I am continuing to pray for the upcom-

ing walks, praying for the pilgrims and teams. During this

time of solitude, I have asked the Lord to reveal those who

are being prepared to say Yes to walk. I am praying for all

of you to remain well, and to stay close to Jesus.

A Message From Our Spiritual Director

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” Hebrews 13:16 As I walked through the grocery store the other day, I just looked around and shook my head. People were wearing surgical masks and rubber gloves, and the food shelves that were nor-mally full were empty. I have on previous shopping trips been amazed by the paper aisle which was BARE day after day; however, on this particular day, the freight truck had just made a delivery of toilet paper. The associates were struggling to get the toilet pa-per up as fast as they could when along comes a little old lady riding on a mo-torized wheel chair. She pulls up to the pallet, grabs two packages of toilet paper, and, before the associate realizes what’s happening, she speeds off while almost running over a mother and her children to make her get-a-way. The associate starts to chase her, yelling, “Ma’am, ma’am, you can only have one package!” The employee wound up getting the extra package away from her as I stood there chuckling at the scene. Anyone close to me knows of my fear of running short of toilet paper, something for which I give my mother the credit. I remember that she would have the top shelf of the bathroom closet filled from front to back with packages of Charmin. I don’t know if my mother’s habit of stocking up on TP was due to the days before she had running water in her house, or the fact that our dog, Puff, when left alone too long, would chew up every roll of toilet tissue she could reach. Either way, when the Covid-19 tragedy hit, I was prepared! My wife will never question again why the top shelf is full of toilet paper. I have learned that in the middle of every tragedy God is working for OUR good. Recently, I have seen people going out of their way to help their neighbors. I have seen those who have sharing with those who have not. I have seen families where both parents work and had little

time to spend with the children, yet, due to the virus, they are now home, spending time as a family doing things together. Yes, our lifestyles have been disrupted, but maybe God is using this time to show us what is really important. And maybe, just maybe, we should spend some of this time on our knees thanking God for

what we have, instead of complaining what we do not. And, for the record, I did get my one package of toilet paper, too! De Colores.

Mayday!! Mayday!! Mayday!! PRAISE ye the Lord!!! Psalm 111

PEACE I leave with you, My PEACE I give to you! John 14:27

I’m praying the Emmaus family is feeling this great gift from Our Father. PEACE which is the first answer to our prayers in all situations. And it assures us HE is with us. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5

So, we only have a day at a time. Let’s dwell in the arms of Our Father. A Comfort place, a Trusting place; knowing HE is in Control. Don’t we believe…With man nothing is possible, but with God “All things are possible”. Mark 10:27

There must be a reason for this season for God to ALLOW this virus. HE can change any situation. I believe HE is working behind the scene. Good things are happening BECAUSE HE is a good, good God!

As Christians we are to Pray and Hope hearts are changed turning to God. I believe this is the big Blessing happening in this season. As people cry out to God in suffering, heart-ache, seeking healing, closeness and forgiveness, HIS Loving, Merciful being is giving the gift of Salvation, with many receiving it. Homeward bound, Eternal Life with Our Savior!

We are ALL heading down that “Y” in the road where that decision needs to be made. Eter-nal life in “Heaven” or “Hell”.

Let us continue to… Pray! Pray! Pray! And PRAISE! PRAISE! PRAISE! Our Lord and Sav-ior, because He is a good, good God!!!

DeColores!!!!

Psalm 46: 1-2 God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble, therefore we will not fear.

Romans 8: 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is Life and Peace.

Psalm 150 Praise Him in the sanctuary; Praise Him in the mighty Heavens. Praise Him for His mighty acts;

Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. ..Let everything that has breath PRAISE THE LORD!

This is my God and I will Exalt Him! Hallelujah! Praise God!!!

GLORY and PRAISE to the Kingdom of GOD and HIS mighty work through the Holy Spirit.

This week the number of cases of Covid-19 on the Shore seemed to jump dramatically, and I feel that a spirit of fear may begin to spread through our ESVA community. On Sunday I came across another virtual choir video which was so encouraging. I wonder if doing this sort of anthem as an inter-church outreach would serve to unite us all and help us all and our ESVA community look to Jesus and receive his hope and love. As a recent come-here, with no experience in microphones or technology, I wouldn’t know how to go about this, but I wonder if that knowledge lies within our Em-maus community or our member churches. Anyway, I thought you might know who to contact if you and the Emmaus leadership thought it was worth pursuing. I am enclosing the YouTube links be-low.

Articles From Your Fellow Community Members

As I first heard about the walk to Emmaus I really didn’t know what to expect. I was raised in church my

whole life so I had the basic knowledge of Christianity and what God meant to me. Both my mother and

father were real active in church, choir, teaching Sunday school, and my father was also a Deacon.

Once I became a teenager around my 18th birthday I faded away from church wanting to do

my own thing, thinking I had it all figured out but found out real fast that I didn’t. I got in

with the wrong crowds and none of these so called friends had any idea who God was. As I

matured I realized walking with God was the only way to clean up my life so I dedicated my

life to him then and have been active in church ever since.

Now for the incredible story:

In the Fall of 2018 a very dear friend I had known for over 30 years, and attends the

church I belong to, asked if he could sponsor me for the Walk to Emmaus. I was a

little hesitant at the time, but after a couple of weeks thinking and praying about it

then I agreed to go. He told me it was at a camp on the Eastern Shore where I would

be with other men of all ages from Thursday until Sunday evening. I was picked up

and taken there by my friend and the rest was truly remarkable. I never knew that

25 other men ,just as hesitant as I , could have such a life changing weekend. The leaders we had were

all men just like us that had at one time attended this weekend and had become Team members.

The fellowship and bonding we all experienced that weekend was truly the work of God. It was the most

rewarding weekend I have ever experienced in the 71 years of my life. We all learned about how much

God really loves and cares about us all no matter how our lives were in the past. We not

only learned how much God loves us but how much the entire Emmaus community

loves us. The men at our tables shared truly intimate details of their lives after we had

listened to the Talks and participated in the post talk activities. And though we didn’t

get a lot of sleep the food was fantastic . My walk was ES 104.

Since the conclusion of the weekend I have rededicated my life to Jesus Christ because of what he did

for me by dying on the cross for my salvation. The year after my walk I became a Teamer and am going

to be a teamer again this Fall. I have also become a member of the Board of Directors this year to an-

swer God’s calling to me.
