Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.History

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity in the United States established for men of African descent.

Founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood between African Americans.

For nearly a century, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated has been the hallmark of leadership development, providing our nation and the world with leaders whose talents have contributed immeasurable value to humanity and civilization.

Alpha Phi Alpha is built on the foundation of Scholarship and Community Service.

The fraternity mandates a series of “National Programs” all dedicated to the development of our communities.

LDI falls under our “Go to High School, Go to College” Initiative.


Leadership Development Institute History

The Leadership Development Institute was chartered in the Eastern Region in 1983.

The program was held continuously on the campus of Howard University, located in Washington, D.C. under the auspices of the Mu Lambda Chapter, which was founded in 1923.

In 2002, the program was held on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

Since 2003 the LDI Program has been hosted at 2 locations in the Eastern Region.

LDI South occurs in June and is hosted in the District of Columbia/Baltimore area

LDI North is hosted in the New York Metropolitan area in July.

In 2011 a third LDI program was added – LDI was hosted at the Eastern Regional Convention in Bermuda. 2012 Leadership Development Institute - LDI East - "Winners Today, Leaders Tomorrow."

LDI ERC at Portsmouth, Virginia (March 30 – March 31)

LDI South at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland (June 28 – July 1)

LDI North at Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York (July 12 – 15).


Leadership Development InstituteProgram Content

LDI reaches out to the brightest and best and installs leadership qualities and skills that will assist them in becoming tomorrow’s leaders today.

Leadership Development Institute has provided high school students a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills in a university atmosphere for the past 27 years.



Intensive and exciting workshops

Lectures, small group discussions, interactive seminars

Tours, recreational and cultural activities have been provided over the years to engage and educate participants.



Participants are groomed and trained to assume roles in the future as leaders and good citizens throughout their communities


Leadership Development InstituteAlpha Ambassadors

Serve as representatives of their schools, communities, and homes at the 2012 Leadership Development Institute and beyond.

Prior to and while attending LDI, these young envoys demonstrate maturity, character, scholarship, and service- all of the fundamental qualities required for leadership. 2012 Leadership Development Institute - LDI East - "Winners Today, Leaders

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and facilitators nurture the leadership potential and personal growth of each ambassador

Ambassadors will further develop existing leadership skills and develop new leadership skills.



Finally, each Alpha Ambassador will behave as a messenger of hope and pride and make a difference in his or her home, school, and community.


Leadership Development InstitutePre-Institute Workshops

The Leadership Development Institute and the ETL Education Foundation Virtual University Initiative (VUI) have partnered to provide a series of synchronous and asynchronous internet-based leadership workshops.



Three to four weeks prior to convening at the LDI site Ambassadors participate in the pre-institute

Activities include the completion of

selected readings, review of custom YouTube presentations, and participation in synchronous workshop via interactive e-conferencing.2012 Leadership Development Institute - LDI East - "Winners Today, Leaders Tomorrow."


Pre-institute workshops include: (1) Leadership 101: Impetus and

Styles

(2) Leadership in the 21st Century: Understanding the Issues

(3) Effective Presentation Tips



Ambassadors also complete a leadership development action plan electronic poster that is displayed during the Institute.

Each ambassador provides an oral presentation of their work during the Leadership Development Institute.
