Buckle Your Seatbelts As the 2010 season opened, the Greyhounds’ spead attack continued to live up to its’ billing, with Wes-ley Wood recording the 12th game since the 2008 season with at least 300 passing yards. Wood threw for a career-best 391 yard and seven touch-downs, surpassing his 320 yard, three touchdown outing against Tarleton last season. Jesse Poku reached the 10 recep-tion mark for the first time since haul-ing in 10 at Abilene Christian last sea-son, catching 10 against SNU for 126 yards and three touchdowns. Darian Dale caught nine passes for 71 yards and a score. Troy Harris registered 58 yards on the ground, while Wood scrambled for an additional 51 yards. The offensive line allowed just two quarterback sacks and plowed the way for over 500 yards of total offense. Last season, the Greyhound Offense set or tied three all-encompassing NCAA records, eight NCAA Division II records, 26 Lone Star Conference records and 21 team records (based on ENMU records available). Among thr broken records was NCAA plays per game (93.45), breaking the record set by the University of Notre Dame, dur-ing the 1970 season. Since adopting the spread offense in 2008, the Hounds have averaged 347.5 yards passing per game along with 29.8 points per game. Last sea-son, ENMU scored a team-record 374 points and eclipsed the team single-game scoring record in a 76-56 win over eventual LSC North champion, Texas A&M-Commerce. So far, the spread has led to 12 300+-yard passing days, two 400+-yard passing games, two 500+-yard passing games and one 600+-yard passing game.

The Defense Doesn’t Rest The Greyhound defense got off to a great start in 2010, registering five sacks, 10 tackles for a loss, five inter-ceptions and 10 quarterback pressures in the season-opener against Southern Nazarene. Matt Kalisch garnered LSC North Defensive Player of the Week for his two-sack, 10-tackle per-formance against SNU, while Curtis Jackson returned an interception for 77 yards for a touchdown. During the opening game, the Hounds forced seven three-and -out possessions.

ENMU Football The Greyhounds had posted seven consecutive winning sea-sons entering 2005, and will be looking to return to their winning ways. The Hounds posted a 2-9 re-cord in 2008. In the 2007 season, the Hounds spent several weeks in the receiving votes section of the AFCA poll after opening the season with four consecutive wins.

Teams that are Special Freshman punter Michael Cot-tingham has kicked six times for the Hounds, without allowing a single returns. Two of his punts against Southern Nazarene were downed inside the 20-yard line and his longest punt covered 48 yards. Cottingham also made a strong debut on kickoffs, with a 60.7 yard average on 10 kicks, with one touch-back. Taylor Cannon connected on all eight point after touchdown attempts against SNU and connected on a 31- third quarter. On five punt returns, Poku aver-aged 7.8 yards, while Arvin Jackson had a 38-yard runback on a kick off.

Coming up Next Next week, the Greyhounds will host longtime LSC South rival, Mid-western State, in what now becomes a LSC Crossover. Las season, Midwestern came to Greyhound Stadium ranked 13th in teh country, but the Hounds struck first on a 21-yard Taylor Cannon field goal. The Mustangs scored the next 10 points , but the Hounds tied the game at 10-all on a two-yard scor-ing catch from Chase Kyser. Mid-western scored with seven second left in the opening half to take a 17-10 lead into the locker room. The first 10 points of the second half went to Midwestern, before Dominic Preston grabbed an eight-yard touchdown pass, pulling ENMU to within 27-17, but a 23-point fourth quarter from the Mustangs put the game out of reach. The Greyhounds managed 496 yards through the air, with each team registering 26 first downs. Dominic Preston and Stefan Mills combined for 14 catches and 188 yards.

Mark Ribaudo, Eastern New Mexico University’s head football coach, has become a familiar face to Greyhound

players and fans. Entering his fifth season as the Greyhound’s head coach, he was an assis-tant coach at Eastern for eight years, including a stint as the team’s defensive coordinator from 1998-2004. He helped guide the Greyhounds to seven winning seasons from 1998-2004. Prior to the 2008 season, he will be shifted his focus from the defense to special teams. Ribaudo was promoted to head coach fol-lowing the retirement of Harold “Bud” Elliott, who coached Eastern from 1994 through 2004. The 2008 season saw the Hounds transition from the triple-option offense, which featured a punishing running game, to an explosive spread offense. The results were evident in the second game of the season, when quarterback Cory Baker became the first ENMU quarter-back to toss for three touchdown passes in a game since the 2001 season. Against Mid-western State, freshman signal caller, J.J. Harp set new team records in completions (37) and pass attempts (70), becoming the Hounds’ first 300-yard passer since Mike Scott against East Texas State on October 21, 1989. Ribaudo also demanded academic excellence in the class-room, which was on display when Karleton Graves, Tillman Stevens and Nathan Uland were selected ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 6. In 2007, he led the Hounds to a 4-0 start, as well as a spot in the receiving votes section of the American Football Coaches Association poll for three consecutive weeks, including a tie with Central Washington for the most votes (21) in that section on September, 25. Ribaudo was the recipient of the 2006 Spirit of Eastern Award. The award is given to an ENMU faculty or staff member that exempli-fies many of the positive traits found at Eastern New Mexico University. The recipient of the award is expected to support ENMU’s teacher-

learning mission, show campus community spirit, display a strong work ethic, care about the institution as a whole, show a commitment to all areas affect-ing student life, and demonstrate a track record in their position. Since arriving at Eastern in 1997,

Ribaudo has more than met all of these criteria. The Greyhounds posted a 53-33 (.616) record during their run of seven winning seasons in the last eight years. The streak also features Lone Star Conference South Division co-championships in 1999 and 2000. “Coach Ribaudo has demonstrated over the past eight years a commitment to the football program and to balancing athletic success and academic achievement, said Dr. Steven G. Gamble, ENMU president. It is no surprise to those of us at ENMU that many of our top student-athletes have played on Coach Rib-audo’s defense. We are confident in his abilities to keep Eastern at or near the top of the Lone Star Conference South Division.” Ribaudo joined the Eastern New Mexico University coaching staff in 1997 as the linebacker coach. Just one year later, he was named defensive coordinator. He has continued to coach Eastern’s linebackers, and will do so again this season. In 2005, the Greyhound defense tied for fourth in the Lone Star Conference, allowing just 183 first downs. ENMU also was produc-tive on the offensive side of the ball, leading the LSC in third down conversions. The ENMU defense ranked ninth in NCAA Division II in total defense during the 1998 season, as Eastern allowed just 254.8 yards

per game. ENMU ranked 19th in the nation in 2003, after holding opponents to 288.2 yards per game. The Hounds allowed just 110.0 rush-ing yards per game in 2003 and gave up just 128.6 rushing yards per game in 2002. “Coach Ribaudo has done an excellent job of building a successful defense year in and year out at ENMU,” then-Athletic Director Mike Maguire said. “His defensive units have been difficult to run against, and they always provide the Greyhounds with big plays when the game is on the line.” Ribaudo previously coached five years at West Texas A&M University, where he was hired as special teams coach in 1992. He developed a nationally-ranked kickoff return unit, and also served as defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996. Ribaudo began his career at his alma mater, Sabino High School in Arizona. He was as-sistant coach for three years, and helped Sabino reach the playoffs in 1986. He was an assistant coach at powerful Amphitheater High School in Arizona in 1988 and 1989. In college, Ribaudo played cornerback and running back at Hastings College (Neb.). He received a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991 and 1992, he was a graduate assis-tant at Midwestern State. MSU won the TIAA title and earned a #10 ranking in the NAIA Poll during his second year. Ribaudo received a master’s degree in Physical Education from MSU in 1992. Ribaudo and his wife, Lisa, live in Portales. They are the parents of John Ross, age 11, and Mary Annabelle, age 9.

Great Momentsat Greyhound Stadium

Nov. 8, 1986 — In Eastern’s second year inthe LSC, the Greyhounds defeated Texas A&I(TAMU-Kingsville), 34-28, on a TD with 1:01 left.

Oct. 26, 1991 — As time expired, ENMUkicked a field goal to edge East Texas State(TAMU-Commerce), 17-14. The Greyhoundswent on to win the LSC Championship.

Sept. 13, 1997 — Charlie Ragle returned akickoff 80 yards on the final play for a 34-31 win over in-state rival New Mexico Highlands.

Nov. 2, 2002 — Quarterback Heath Ridenourrushed for a school record 294 yards andfour TDs, as ENMU defeated TAMU-Kingsville.Eastern kicked a 39-yard field goal with 0:28left to win 37-34.

Oct. 9, 2004 — Eastern’s defense stoppedWest Texas A&M inside the 10-yard line twicein the closing minutes. The Greyhounds alsoknocked down a desperation pass on the finalplay of the game to secure a 21-20 victory.

Sept. 19, 2009 — Eastern outscored Texas A&M-Commerce 76-56, setting a team record for points in a game. The defense came up with three intercep-tions, including one returned 22-yards by Rodney Mitchell for a touchdown.

The Eastern New Mexico University football team has achieved an overall record of 48-27 over the past eight seasons. A great portion of that success has come from the home field advantage at Greyhound Stadium. Over the same seven-year period, ENMU has gone 26-12 at home, while scoring 28.7 points per game.

Greyhound Stadium seats 6,100 fans, including an area of enclosed seating on the home side of the field. The enclosed seating is underneath the stadium’s large press box. The stadium is equipped with lights. ENMU will play two home games at night this season.

The press box has a spacious media room, as well as rooms

for the coaches from both teams, home and visiting radio stations, and the scoreboard operator and public address announcer. All Greyhound Stadium seating is elevated above field level, providing an excellent view of the game.

A scoreboard with a message center was used for the first time in 2000. It provides information about the game in progress, plus future events and scores from other games.

This year, Eastern will play six games at Greyhound Stadium, opening on Aug. 28th against Southern Nazarene. Midwestern State comes to town for a LSC crossover on Sept. 11th, while ENMU makes their debut in the LSC North on Sept.

11, against defending champion, Texas A&M-Commerce. Central Oklahoma will visit Blackwater Draw on Oct. 9, with another crossover against Abilene Christian coming on Oct. 23. The home finale against Southeastern Oklahoma State is set for Oct. 30.

Greyhound Stadium provides a home f ieldadvantage for the Greyhounds. At left: Thecrowd watches ENMU in action. Below: Fanscheer and show support for the Greyhounds.

The winner of the Eastern New Mexico University-West Texas A&M University football game receives the traveling Wagon Wheel Trophy. The annual battle for the Wagon Wheel began in 1986, when the teams resumed play 41 years after the first game in 1945. Since 1986, ownership of the wheel has been contested every year except 1991, when West Texas A&M did not compete in football. Last fall, WTAMU edged the Greyhounds in overtime, 52-51. Few college football teams have a home field advantage like Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds play within visual distance of ENMU’s Blackwater Draw Museum and just a few miles from the Blackwater Draw archaeological site. The “Curse of Blackwater Draw” has been blamed by opponents for many home wins by the Hounds. Newspapers in New Mexico and Texas often list Blackwater Draw as the dateline for ENMU’s home games. Blackwater Draw is a significant site for the study of Clovis Culture, and is also a key site for Folsom Culture research. Both groups hunted game and gathered plants and roots. Humans arrived at the site at least 11,000 years ago. At one time there was a large pond near the Blackwater Draw site that was probably a major wa-tering hole for animals. Greyhound football is about preparation, teamwork and family. It is about more than individual accomplish-ments on the field. It is about working together for common goals and giving one’s best in ev-ery season, in every game, on every play. The Greyhounds are guided by a special philosophy that goes beyond just athletic talent and X’s and O’s. It starts with a firm base — belief, accountability, selflessness and enthusiasm. It continues with players being disciplined, playing together, giving exceptional effort, show-ing class on and off the field, using love, faith and heart power to provide the best individual performances they can, and maintaining a high level of character at all times. When individual players have attained these goals, they can put them into action through an aggressive philosophy that will maximize their own talents, while placingpressure on Eastern’s opponents. Ultimately, a fully-developed team concept is in place and all players are committed to the final goals of the program — to graduate and win! Eastern has earned seven winning seasons on the field in the last eight years, while ending each year with many players on the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll and walking across the stage at graduation.

Greyhound Football is proud of success both on the field and in the classroom. At Eastern, the phrase “Graduate and Win” is more than just words, it’s the top goal of every Greyhound!

Where Are They Now

Page 42: EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS 2010 Weekly … Notes at Angelo … · Angelo State closed the 2009 season with losses to West Texas A&M, Tarelton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville,

The ENMU Greyhounds have found success on the field with seven consecutive winning seasons in nine years and Lone Star Conference South Division co-championships in 1999 and 2000. Head Coach Mark Ribaudo and the Greyhounds have achieved success off the field as well through a growing number of community service projects. “Our philosophy at ENMU is we’re one small part of a great community and we want to do our share to make it an even better community,” Ribaudo said. Last year, Clovis was hit by a dev-astating barrage of tornadoes, damag-ing much of the south end of the city, downing electrical wires and forcing much of route 70 between Portales and Clovis to close, with people living in that area having to temporarily evacu-ate their homes. The Eastern New Mexico University players and coach-es organized an effort to help clean up the area, removing debris, and helping speed up the recovery process. The 2007 kids camp gave players the chance to teach the fundamentals of football to over 80 youngsters. The children also played 7-on-7 football games with help from the ENMU

players. Meanwhile, about 60 players and coaches contributed to the down-town clean-up effort. The team also has a tradition of helping students learn through literacy programs at area schools. In 1999, the ENMU football team was honored by the national Help One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) mentoring program with its top honor, the Betty Scharff Memorial Award, for helping students at nearby Portales Junior High School with reading and language arts skills. With a history of community service, it’s not surprising the team added a new level to its efforts with the Spring Challenge of 2007, in which nine groups of up to 10 players competed to see which group could provide the most community service in one semester. It was up to each captain and his team members to develop their own list of community service projects. A point system was used to determine the winning teams. Eastern’s football players partici-pated in a wide variety of activities to help the community. They assisted with physical education classes at Lindsey Grade School, washed cars, judged in the Spanish Fair at ENMU, helped with chores at the local Bap-tist Children’s Home, mowed lawns, helped fix up area softball fields, participated in the Community Action Day and were involved in events asso-ciated with National Physical Educa-tion Day on the ENMU campus. The Greyhound football team re-ceived a certificate of recognition from the Portales City Council and Mayor Orlando Ortega for its efforts in com-

munity service. The top three teams in the Spring Challenge were honored with a steak dinner. More importantly, all the players learned about the ben-efits of community service, as they volunteered a total of more than 1,000 man-hours. “They learned self-sacrifice, that giving in some cases is better than receiving and they learned how much our community appreciates Greyhound football,” Ribaudo said. “And they learned how important it is to give to a community to make it better.” Although the recent community service projects are over, that doesn’t mean the Greyhounds are finished helping out in Portales. The team and coaches are already thinking about op-tions for community service projects in future years. “This is just the beginning in terms of ENMU Greyhound Football and community service,” Ribaudo said. “We’re going to try and continue this and break our record every year.” With community service, the Hounds win, youngsters in Portales win, and the entire community wins. It’s a great extension of the Greyhound Way.

Page 43: EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS 2010 Weekly … Notes at Angelo … · Angelo State closed the 2009 season with losses to West Texas A&M, Tarelton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville,

It never seems to amaze me at the work that our coaches and athletes do at Eastern New Mexico University. Not many people are as crazy sports minded as I am but I do feel lucky enough to be associated with a great sports atmosphere. Everyone remembers the disastrous tornado that hit parts of the Clovis and Portales area leaving many homeless and many trying to rebuild their houses and their lives. One of the many businesses destroyed in the tornado was the Grande Vida Dairy. More than 960 acres destroyed in one way or another, the Grande Vida Dairy is trying to pick up the pieces of its business. I truly believe that our coaching staff’s at Eastern are exceptional especially in times like these. I know for a fact that all of our coaches and athletes work hard every day in practice and work hard to reach their goals. Our coach’s care about their athletes and our university but to see the coaches pull their teams together to show the community life is much more than about sports is something that needs to be rewarded. Now I know for a fact Mike and Cindy Mitchell and Partners (owners of Grande Vida Dairy) did not beg Greyhound Coach Mike Howard to bring the football team to the dairy for a clean-up session. With the great minds of our football coach-ing staff the Hounds used their willingness to help those in need, and this need time just so happened to be the Grande Vida Dairy. With approximately 60 Hound football players spending their Saturday working at the dairy picking up the debris from the tornado that was wide spread miles across Roosevelt County was not an easy task. Our athletes as well as many of our coaches spent over five hours helping out and doing the best they possibly could to give back to the community. Being a former college athlete myself back in the day I don’t remember to much about

doing a lot of community service and I guess that’s why I see ENMU as a better place to be. I know we have many athletes that give back to the community in their own way but just getting a glimpse at the work that our football team on Saturday was definitely a plus. Unfortunately there was a lot of damage done across the Clovis and Portales area but in my own opinion I don’t think anyone had the damage that the Grande Vida Dairy experi-enced. Yes many homes were destroyed, but be-lieve it or not by far the dairy got the worse end of it. I saw Greyhound athletes working hard working and walking through sand dunes to find and pick up debris and saw many oth-ers picking up tin that was torn apart by the tornado and even saw the athletes hard at work with sledge hammers and jackhammers. More than just your typical day on the football field. Saturday was a day and life without sports, it was day that the Hounds family put it all to-gether to show the community how much they care and will go the extra mile to help those in need. Even with the Salvation Army and FEMA in town, nothing could match the drive and will of 60 Eastern New Mexico Greyhound football players and coaches. With many of the families and businesses still trying to pick up pieces of last month’s tornado, the community is still buzzing almost a month after the life threaten-ing tornado that hit the local area. Agreeing to give up their Saturday morning and afternoon, many of the Greyhound football squad reached out by giving a helping hand to Grande Vida Dairy. Grande Vida Dairy owned by Mike and Cindy Mitchell and Partners was one of the lo-cal companies that had their business destroyed with an estimated damage of four million dol-lars. Not only was their dairy destroyed entirely but the loss in cattle is estimated at 300 and counting. Along with the cattle, much of the 960 acres was destroyed with debris flying for miles. According to Rebekah Mitchell, daughter of Mike and Cindy the Hounds coaching staff volunteered to bring their athletes to Grande Vida Dairy and help all they could with picking up damaged debris and trash. “Being deeply rooted in the community the Greyhounds took this opportunity to help those in need,” said Greyhound Assistant Coach Draco Miller. “We

believe in giving back to our community and we want the people of Roosevelt and Curry Counties to know that we are here with them,” Miller said. “Our players spent about five hours cover-ing a dairy that was huge in size,” Miller said. “The team picked up tin siding, roof tops, steel pipes, water sprinklers, rubber tires and even tore down some sheet rock walls and busted down cement walls.” “We as coaches wanted to show the impor-tance of giving back and this was real,” Miller said. “Most people go through life and never have to witness or go through some type of natural disaster and in one weekend our players saw the destruction and felt the pain of those affected by the tornado.”“Our football players see giving back to the community as a way of saying thank you and thank you for your support,” Miller said. “They gave their time to help us and we are so grateful to them,” said Rebekah in a telephone interview. “There was so much to do and I felt so bad for the ones who had to walk through the sand dunes just to pick up the trash,” Miller said. “We as coaches are so very proud of our Greyhound players and they showed us what it meant to be a Greyhound, but most importantly it showed that giving is always better than receiving. — Story was courtesy of Jon Vestal

Greyhound Yearly Results

Derrick Hunter sprints down the sideline at West Texas A&M in 2005. Hunter holds a number of the Greyhounds receiving records, and concluded his ENMU career in 2005.

Steve Hinson played from 2001-2004 and was one of the top passers and kick returners in recent history for the Greyhounds

Kevin Kott played from 1983-1984, and holds numerous passing records, including the single game record for yardage, with 500 against East Central in 1984. He also holds the record for total offense in a game (496) and season (3,354).

The Greyhound record for touchdowns in a game is five, and the last player to accomplish the feat was Dennis Beard against West Texas A&M on November 4, 2000.

In 2004, Corey White, currently an assistant coach took the opening kickoff of the second half against Southwestern Oklahoma State, 100 yards for a score, tying an NCAA record. The Hounds went on to win that game 39-0. Eastern has four 100-yard kickoff returns in their history.
