EAGLES RALLY BUT FALL TO BRONCOS, 44-36DETROIT, Mich.--The Eastern Michigan University football teamcame back from a huge deficit only to see its valiant effort fallshort in a 44-36 Mid-American Conference loss here Saturdayafternoon in a game played at Ford Field, home of the DetroitLions.

EMU was the home team for this second annual CollegiateClash and it had all the makings of an instant classic: great indi-vidual plays, plenty of offensive fireworks, a great comeback, and an enthusiastic crowd.

Both teams scored on their first offensive possessions of thegame and the game remained close through the early stages.

Trailing by a 20-17 count in the late stages of the second quar-ter, the Eagles were poised to take the lead but a WMU intercep-tion on the EMU four-yard line ended up with the Broncos addinga field goal with just 00:08 left for a 23-17 halftime advantage.

Western opened the third quarter with two touchdowns for a37-17 lead before Eastern began one of its patented comebacks.

Senior quarterback Matt Bohnet (Grand Ledge, Mich.-GrandLedge) connected with wide receiver Chris Graham (Detroit,Mich.-Cody) for a nine-yard score to cut it to 37-24.

EMU continued the rally with an eight-yard touchdown run byAnthony Sherrell (Roseville, Mich.-Orchard Lake St. Mary’s)and a 27-yard pass from Bohnet to Travis Lewis (Kalamazoo,Mich.-Loy Norrix), cutting the WMU lead to 37-36 with just 6:39left in the game.

EMU placekicker Andrew Wellock (North Canton, Ohio-Green), who booted the first three PAT’s along with a 45-yard field goal, had his fourth PAT blocked, and EMU Head Coach Jeff Genykdecided to go for a two-point conversion to gain the lead afterpulling within the one point, 37-36. The pass for two did not suc-ceed and Western then went on to score another touchdown forthe win.

EMU BREAKS ROAD LOSING STREAKMUNCIE, Ind.- -The Eastern Michigan University football team broke a 26-

game road losing streak with a 31-24 Mid-American Conference road win hereSaturday, Oct. 9 against Ball State University, spoiling the Cardinals’ homecoming.

The previous road win for the Eagles was a 20-13 victory at Toledo, Oct. 23,1999.

The win boosts the Eagles to 2-4 overall, but more importantly gives theGreen and White a 2-1 MAC record heading into a Saturday, Oct. 16, league tiltat Western Michigan.

This time around it was a case of a strong offensive showing and some late-game defensive heroics for Eastern to halt the losing streak.

Junior quarterback Matt Bohnet (Grand Ledge, Mich.-Grand Ledge)turned in a solid all-around game, completing 30-of-46 passes for 390 yards andtwo touchdowns and rushing seven times for 36 yards. The 426 yards in totaloffense is the fifth-best single-game output in EMU history while his 390 passingyards is tied for eighth.

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eric Deslauriers (Gatineau, Quebec,Canada-Lennoxville College Prep) hauled in 10 Bohnet passes for 209 yardsand two touchdowns. He became just the third player in EMU history to turn inmore than 200-yards receiving, with his 209 yards the third-best effort in schoolhistory.

Head Coach Jeff Genyk’s Eagles took an early 7-0 lead at the 10:26 markof the first quarter on a 10-yard run by A.J. Bennett (Delray Beach, Fla.-Atlantic Community) with Andrew Wellock (North Canton, Ohio-Green)adding the PAT, his first of four on the day.

After BSU kicked a 26-yard field goal the Eagles went up 14-3 on a 38-yardpass from Bohnet to Deslauriers and Ball State answered with a touchdown to cutEastern’s lead to 14-10 at intermission.

Ball State struck first in the third quarter on a one-yard run to take a 17-14lead but the Eagles fought right back to go up 21-17 with 8:50 left in the thirdquarter when Deslauriers grabbed an 18-yard Bohnet touchdown pass.

BSU regained the lead at 24-21 with 5:41 left in the third on a touchdownpass, and once again the Eagles were equal to the challenge, tying the game at 24-all on a 32-yard Wellock field goal with 6:16 left in the third quarter.

The EMU defense came up with one of its two final stands on the next BallState possession, forcing the Cardinals into a punting situation from their own 15-yard line with 4:12 remaining in the game. The big play in that stand was a 12-yard sack by senior linebacker Kevin Harrison (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville).

Bohnet then directed a five-play, 55-yard drive as Sherrell busted throughthe middle of the Ball State defensive for a 26-yard run, giving the Eagles a 31-24lead.

Once again, Eastern’s defense was outstanding, halting the Ball State driveat the Cardinals’ 42-yard line, taking over for the final three plays of the game.

The big stop in that final defensive effort was a nine-yard sack by convertedtight end Kevin Howe (Fruitport, Mich.-Grand Haven).
