Dear Friends Have you ever had one of those days? I had

one recently when I visited Leicester. It was the day after Leicester City clinched the premiership title, so I wasn’t entirely surprised at the end of the day to encounter heavy traffic trying to get out of the city. However, as I got nearer to the M69, the traffic got heavier and heavier till it almost ground to a complete standstill. Eventually, I reached the M69 roundabout, still wondering what could have caused such profound gridlock. When I finally got to the other side of the roundabout, I discovered that the M69 was closed altogether. This meant going back around the roundabout to get onto the M1 travelling south. Why, I wondered, hadn’t someone troubled to alert motorists to the fact that the motorway was closed before they reached the roundabout. That information alone would have saved me quarter of an hour. Worse was to follow. Accessing the M6 as I planned is no longer possible from the M1 South (a further 10 mile detour ensued). Exiting the M6 at the Ricoh, I encountered one final standstill traffic jam, which forced me to find another route back to Eastern Green. Two and a quarter hours to do a 45 minute journey.

The worst journey of my life, I reflected afterwards. At least it was all over, I consoled myself. Except it wasn’t! That weekend, I received a letter from Leicestershire Police advising me that I had been clocked running a red light in Leicester. This seems inconceivable given that the traffic was nose to tail, but I have resigned myself to paying

Page 5: Eastern Green Village Hall Have Your Saystandrews-eg.org.uk/standrews/wp-content/uploads/...Roselyn. Pickford Green Lane Tel: 01676 523130 Email: richard@himec.co.uk For Wedding Enquiries,

the £100 fine and accepting the 3 points on my license, my first such offence.

It felt as though some invisible force was out to get me. Have you ever felt like that? Have you found yourself muttering the words, ‘just my luck’ or ‘why do these things always happen to me’ as some misfortune overtakes you? I suspect that there is more than one person nodding right now, which means of course that it doesn’t always happen to YOU. Sometimes, it’s happening to someone else!

This isn’t real suffering. Not compared with those drowning in the Mediterranean, fleeing their homeland or those put to death for their faith or being tortured for their political views. St Paul encourages us to rejoice in our sufferings, and he did know a thing or two about the subject. His argument is that suffering produces perseverance; and that perseverance in turn produces character and character produces hope.

For some of us, this requires an attitude shift. No longer: why me!? But what good thing can come of these trials? What new thing can God fashion in me that will make me a better person? Don’t wait for the next 10 mile traffic jam to start cultivating this in yourself.

Every blessing, Greg

Lunch and Chat Lunch n Chat is a friendly luncheon group that meet on Wednesdays at 12pm at St. Andrew's Church for people who have suffered a bereavement of a loved one. It can be a partner, parent or child you have lost or someone who was close to you. The format is lunch usually consisting of soup and a bread roll, a small desert, tea/coffee and biscuits. It is held on the first four Wednesdays of each month (where there is a fifth Wednesday we do not meet), except December. We are here to talk and listen. It is a safe environment where you can come along, chat and share your feelings or just listen, but everyone having experienced such a profound loss can feel welcome and start trying to pick up the pieces and start living again. We are lively friendly group open to both men and women, and our numbers have increased over the last 12 months to approximately 15 people. We have started a new group, which commenced on Thursday 16th June, called ‘Supper n Chat’, which follows a similar format. This group runs every fortnight at 7pm. If you know of anyone who would benefit, please contact Rita Muir on 02476 460744.

From the Registers …. Baptisms Harry Chamberlain Funerals Alan House Frances Skyte John Pinks Weddings John Cooke and Hayley Miller Eastern Green Golden Years

Our first gathering in May was a bumper celebration of Birthdays. John was 85 and he provided the chocolates for everyone to share. We also joined in the Birthday celebrations for Jackie, Sheila and Ann. We enjoyed our usual cup of tea and games of Strike it Lucky and Bingo. We also held a raffle at this meeting.

Jean put forward some ideas for future events over the next few months such as a homemade cake sale on 23rd June and on 7th July we are having our annual Strawberry Cream Tea. Other suggestions were made, all of which sound great, so watch this space for the dates.

Unfortunately, sad news came to this meeting as we learned that Frank Tilsley, one of our members, had passed away. The club have sent a sympathy card to his family.

Eastern Green History Group Mike Knight, a parish team assistant, hosted

the visit of a goodly number of members and friends to the Westwood Heath Church for our meeting in May. Significantly, many of us had not visited the church before and it was of great interest to learn something of its history. We thank him for taking us round, providing copies of a history of the Church, and for looking after us.

When we look at the Parish of Westwood today with its housing and shopping areas, the University with its extensive campus and the Science and Business Parks, it is difficult to imagine that when the Church District was first constituted it was completely agricultural in character and consisted of isolated hamlets with a sparse population.

The building of a new church on land provided by Lord Leigh was agreed to and was erected in 1843-4 and consecrated a year later. The church was designed by Scott & Moffatt, who also designed Wasperton Church at about the same time. Scott was later to become Sir George Gilbert Scottnad who also designed Liverpool Cathedral

Interestingly the present vicarage was built in 1965, the date of the first academic term at the University of Warwick, and in 1994 the Church enjoyed its 150th anniversary.

Future Meetings Monday 25th July at 2pm, a tour of St. Andrew's Old Vicarage, meet at the church but please let Jenny know that you would like to attend. No meeting in August, Contact Jenny 76403372

The Pram Service is held twice a month (2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings) to minister to, and with, the youngest members of our church family and their carers. It has it's own vibrant congregation enhanced by the number and age range of the children. We have been continuing our journey through the Old Testament with craft, story, songs and, of course, drinks and biscuits.

This year the 'mums' have played a large part in the planning and preparation for the services and have begun to join in leading the service itself. The services have been supported by a member of clergy (Greg, Jonathan or Lynda) with the mums being encouraged to lead the craft activities, tell the story and lead the prayers. Special thanks go to all who have been involved in this and especially to Eileen who has kept us going with endless cups of tea, coffee, juice and biscuits!

As with all things of this nature we have seen children, and their mums, leave as they've started school or nursery and have new members join. It is a delight to see many babies being brought along as the first point of contact to arrange a Baptism or Thanksgiving. What is even more of a delight is that many of them stay. The ever changing congregation is both a challenge and a strength. There is always the opportunity for each adult to use, and develop, their skills and we are always happy when they would like to be more involved in joining the planning team.

Sowing the seeds of faith, helping to nourish them and watching them grow are a joy for all involved.

However, I would like to thank not only the collectors who do a fabulous job but those of you who donated too! Thank you for showing your love for people – we know that taking part in Christian Aid Week takes hard work, perseverance and dedication but thanks to your help we will be able to lift more communities out of the devastation of war – so they can thrive , free from fear. Canon David Winter, former Head of Religious Broadcasting at the BBC, considers the pros and cons of summer travel…

THE WAY I SEE IT - Stay-cations

We live in an era of freshly coined if slightly odd abstract nouns. We all got to know ‘Brexit’ (British-exit) but this month we shall also experience, I suspect, ‘Stay-cation’ – staying in Britain for your vacation. Terrorism is one powerful incentive to Stay-cate, but so is cost, and all the hassle of international travel. Why not, people think, simply get in the car or book the train and visit some part of our lovely island that we’ve never been to before? If you haven’t seen the Highlands of Scotland, or the beautiful west coast of Wales or the Boston Stump or the Helston River or the Jurassic coast, then why not make that this year’s holiday adventure? There are, of course, two sides to the argument. For my generation, going ‘abroad’ was a wonderful adventure. Good heavens, they actually spoke a different language, and they ate exotic things like pizza, croque monsieur and paella, washed down with unbelievably cheap red wine. Just getting on the ferry was an adventure, let alone shopping in a foreign supermarket. And there’s also the Unique Selling Point, sunshine. Balance up the arguments, and it still comes down to Stay-cation or Go-cation. Those who ‘stay’ will come home astonished at the beauty and diversity of our island home. Those who go will parade their tans for a few weeks and scoff at our fears of delays and terrorism. Whichever you choose – or even if you simply stay-cate at home and sit in the garden – do something different. Autumn is only round the corner.

Next time someone tells you that Jesus did not exist…

Recent research in England revealed that 40% of people do not realise Jesus was a real person. If Jesus was as ‘real’ as the Christian creeds imply, then the whole purpose and destiny of humanity are changed. There’s a lot at stake. How do we know that Jesus actually existed? For that matter, how do we know any historical figure existed? We need to look for corroborative evidence. In any other historical investigation we would examine all literary sources. However, as sceptics often discount biblical material because they suspect the writers distorted the facts, we look outside the New Testament to non-Christian authors for clues. First, to Roman historians. Tacitus (56-117 AD) wrote “Christus was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius”. Suetonius (69-130 AD) wrote of “Chrestus” and of his followers having been persecuted by Nero. In 112 AD a Roman Magistrate, Pliny the Younger, sought advice from the Emperor Trajan, having failed to force Christians to renounce Christ whom they “worshipped as a god”, when worship was due exclusively to the emperor. The Jewish historian Josephus (37-100 AD) referred to James as, “the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ.” None of these authors questioned Christ’s existence. Even-handed enquirers would also want to know what the New Testament has to say. By comparison with texts of other ancient literature now available, we have infinitely better records. Over 5,000 separate manuscripts are now available. One complete New Testament in the British Library is over 1600 years old. A substantial collection of New Testament documents is dated mid-3rd Century and is split between Dublin, Michigan and other locations. Much of the Gospel of John is in a document dated 200 AD or earlier. Modern translations of the Bible result from studying all these manuscripts. It is false to suggest that they suffer from multiple translations, we can no more reject Jesus' existence than we can reject the existence of a mass of pagan personages whose reality as historical figures is never questioned.
