TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more proper to think of today as a “Big Sun-day.” On every Sunday of the

year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day holy. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gathering all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remembering, an-amnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We re-member who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark every Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the north-ern states, to stroll through a budding garden. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives.

DRAWN INTO THE STORY “We are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter Sunday concen-trate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The passage from John’s Gospel has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: “It is won-derful in our eyes!” What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonderful in our eyes.

Easter Sunday 2016 Dear Friends, Jesus was buried on Good Friday afternoon. The story of the burial of Jesus is a story of intrigue that gives us a clue into an argument going on in the

early years after the resurrection:

1) When the tomb was found empty, the Jewish leaders claimed that the disciples stole Jesus’ body.

2) Christians responded that the Jewish leaders had placed guards at the tomb

to prevent such a theft. So, if the tomb was empty, it was because God had raised Jesus from the dead, despite the guards. The Gospel writers also want us to know that both sides agree on several points:

1) Jesus was really dead 2) He was buried in a tomb that was known to them. 3) On Easter Sunday morning, the body of Jesus was not there.

The real question is: How did that tomb get empty? Our Christian faith in the resurrection doesn’t rest on the empty tomb. It rests on the bodily appearances of the risen Lord, described by all four gospel writers. More than that, it should rest on our own experiences of the risen Lord. On this Easter Sunday, let all of us take some quiet time to be with the risen Lord and experience His presence in our lives. Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus is truly risen from the dead! Happy Easter! Father Brian

CAPTURADO POR LA HISTORIA “¡Somos testigos!”

¡Bendito eres!

IN GOD WE TRUST On this day in 1864, the United States Congress au-thorized the placement of the phrase, “In God We Trust,” on all two cent coins. The following year, the inscription extended to all coins. Congress’ decision was a response to a 1861 letter form a Pennsylvania preacher who worried that recognition of God had been overlooked on the nation’s coins. Although the secretary of treasury and the mint direc-tor were open to including the phrase, their attention was di-verted to the more pressing issue of the civil war. ******************** The line “In God We Trust” comes from the fourth stanza of the “Star Spangled Banner” ********************* In 1956, “In God We Trust” officially became the country’s motto.
