A PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord “Peter proceeded to speak and said; ‘You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did… they put him to death hanging him on a tree. This man God raised up on the third day and granted that he be visible not to all but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.’” We can listen to many Easter sermons, telling of the events and appearances of Jesus. We visit the upper room with the apostles, meet Him with Mary in the garden, breakfast with Him on the shore of Tiberias, and share an evening meal in Emmaus. All are witness stories. The Pentecost sermon of Peter summarizes the event of Easter and its meaning for the witnesses. He was anointed with the Holy Spirit so we too have been confirmed. He was filled with power, so too we who live the life of grace. He went about doing good, the work of the church and we missionary disciples today. We too are the chosen witnesses of the Risen One who eat at His table, breaking the bread of life. Easter faith tells us that He lives and among us. Easter joy fills us with a special enthusiasm. Easter commissioning sends us to bring that joy to others.

Divine Mercy Sunday ~ April 8, 2018 In 1931, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina and asked that the Sunday after Easter become the “Feast of Mercy.” Jesus promised anyone who honors him as King of Mercy and prays the Chaplet of Divine Mercy – the prayer he gave St. Faustina – would receive special graces and great mercy.

~~~~~~~~ A Divine Mercy Celebration will be held next Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 4 to 5:30pm at Holy Rosary Church, 170 Bradhurst Avenue, Hawthorne, NY 10532. Telephone 914-769-0030 with questions.
“Why Do Catholics Offer the Sign of Peace?
During the Mass, we offer the Sign of Peace in preparation for receiving Communion. After his Resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples in the Upper Room. Although his friends had abandoned him, Jesus forgave them saying: “Peace be with you” (John 20:19). When we offer each other the Sign of Peace we imitate Christ. The Sign of Peace is also a sign of spiritual unity. Just as Jesus reconciled with his disciples, we are called to reconcile with each other. ~Growing in Faith, April, 2018 The RDC Center for Counseling & Human Development invites you to the following 2 free programs: Thursday, April 12, 7-8:30pm: “Are You Caring for an Aging Parent: What you should know – Self Care, Medicare, Medicaid, Estate Planning.” Speakers: Neil Rimsky Esq., Cuddy & Fedder & Sandy Chaiken, LCSW, former complex hospital system social worker.
