PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

LION OR LAMB?Writing this in February, I wonder if the groundhog pre-diction is coming true--are we in for an early spring? Is March coming in like a lion or a lamb?

MAKING A DIFFERENCEPondering the future can be an exercise for fun or part of planning to ensure that our future is as bright as we can make it. We can’t choose our weather, but we can choose to make a difference in our community. For example, we can recycle, reuse, and think twice about buying items that are single use. There is a lot of infor-mation available to help us make better and more in-formed choices to help the earth.

ANNUAL GARAGE SALETake part in our Annual Garage Sale, recycle some unused things in your home, and get the added bonus of meeting new people and feeling a part of this great community. Set aside items and watch for details on our hall sign, Facebook, and our website www.northhavenyyc.ca.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS If you are looking for information to help you feel a sense of community and to become more connected to the city at large, come out to a North Haven Community Association meeting or an event at our community hall. Come meet your neighbours and the board, who ARE your neighbours!

YOUR IDEAS AND TALENTSPerhaps you have information or talents to share. At-tend a meeting and discuss your ideas for events or new groups that fill a need or desire in our neighbourhood for: socialization, learning, or fitness. We love to hear your ideas!

Hope to see you at our next meeting Thursday, March 12 at 7:00 pm.

News from the Friends of Nose Hill

by Anne Burke

Calgary Captured has placed and managed almost 70 remote wildlife cameras in Calgary parks, including Nose Hill. With the help of citizen scientists, partners, and funders, the team has classified 210,378 images to date (which amounts to 1.5 million independent classifications). You can check out their website at: www.zooniverse.org/ projects/calgary-captured/calgary-captured/.

The City twitter handle is @cityofcalgary and some im-ages are trending on: #calgarycaptured.

The Parks and Pathways Bylaw allows for closure of park areas to address safety concerns, manage wildlife, conduct maintenance and repairs, or allow for reha-

bilitation of natural areas. With limited resources, public awareness will be required to encourage compliance. The City reserves the right to close areas, restrict use, or limit activities. With a common-sense approach, users should still respect the environment and open space. The intent is to enforce the Bylaw in a manner that em-phasizes education, but fines have increased for all of-fences.

The Alberta Native Plant Council (ANPC) Society of-fers Guidelines for Rare Plant Surveys and how to grow native plants. The “Keys to Alberta Species” lists 4 new families. Photos of many species are required. There is a Call Out for Presenters. A list of invasive species includes those regulated by the Alberta Weed Control Act. Plant Study Groups are across the province to nurture interest in— and expand the knowledge of— native plants and local ecology. In spring/summer, meet outdoors (in the field), indoors in fall/winter. The Southern Alberta Study Group meets at the U. of C. Herbarium. It is a friendly and informal venue to share a common fondness for plants and the natural world. The 2020 ANPC Workshop “Northern Native Plants and Ecosystems” will be on March 28, 2020 in Peace River, Alberta. www.anpc.ab.ca.

ENTERTAINMENT REPORT

March is a quiet month for us, but get ready for April!

We’ll be hosting three very different events:

EASTER EGG HUNT Our Easter Egg Hunt and Spring Carnival is one of this community’s most popular family events. The egg hunt will happen at the baseball diamond and green park west of the hall on Saturday, April 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 am. After the hunt, you can gather at the hall for snacks, games, face painting, and more fun.

You must sign up for the Easter Egg hunt, and the sign-up sheet will be posted on the website in mid-March. The Spring Carnival is open to all, and we love to see a good turnout of community members!

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP & POTLUCK LUNCH Saturday morning, April 18, we clean-up our commu-nity! Please gather at the hall at 9:00 am if you wish to participate. Hang around for our potluck lunch.

SPRING PRE-TEEN DANCE In the evening of April 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, come out to our spring Pre-Teen Dance. DJ SafeZone will be spinning tunes. Jump in the photo booth. Lots of snacks will be available for purchase from the concession.

Tickets go on sale April 4: $5 in advance through the website or $6 at the door. This event is open to kids in grades 4-6.

More information is available on our website, northhavenyyc.ca. Also, keep an eye on Facebook, the hall sign and, of course, this newsletter for the latest information on your events.

Hello Calgary-Klein! March is Community Association Awareness Month! Did you know that there are 151 community associations in Calgary? These neighbourhood-based, not-for-profit organizations bring social, recreational, and educational programs to their communities. They also manage the community hall and act as a voice for the community on issues that affect them. They are run by over 20,000 volunteers, making it the largest collective volunteer movement in Calgary. With the broad range of services and programs provided by the hard work of our community associations, there is something for every demographic ranging from baby to senior. During March Membership Month, the Federation of Calgary Communi-ties is providing resources to Calgarians on the benefits of belonging to your community association.

Calgary Klein is home to 11 community associations. I want to commend the hard work and dedication of our commu-nity associations in enacting change in their communities. Attending community events across the riding brings focus to the different demographics and issues at play for each of the communities, and really showcases their diversity. My e-newsletter includes links to all of the community as-sociations in the riding and highlights some of their current events. You can sign up for the e-newsletter by calling or emailing my office.

In January, my office held a meeting with community association representatives in order to learn more about current topics of interest and ways they’d like us to support them. Take some time during March Community Associa-tion Awareness Month to be part of it all and find out more about your community association.

Kindest regards,

Jeremy Nixon, MLA Constituency Office

The Guidebook for Great Communities- planning communities for everyone

The City of Calgary is planning communities in Calgary so they offer more housing, shops, and service choices for the people who live, work and visit them. The Guidebook for Great Communities provides the foundation on which our communities can grow and develop to be vibrant and resilient, for generations to come.

For a community to be a great place to live, it requires housing options; access to a variety of goods and services close by; and offer its residents and visitors areas to recreate and gather. When a community provides more opportunities, people can live in their neighbourhood regardless of age, income or stage in life.

You can find more information on the Guidebook for Great Communities at calgary.ca/guidebook 19
