Visiting Gujwa-eup, the essence of inland travel in Jeju Island

Viewing northeast from Mt. Halla in Jeju Island, tourists can easily find Gujwa-eup of Jeju-si which is located between Jocheon-eup famous for Geomunoreum and Sungsan-eup famous for Sungsan Ilchulbong in the form of triangle. Gujwa-eup is constantly visited by travelers in Jeju, because it has many splendid spectacles such as lava cave created by lava which was erupted at Geomunoreum and flowed to the northeast coast along the slant surface of ground and Bijarim. Especially, the lava caves in Geomunoreum such as Manjang Cave, Bengdee Cave, Kimnyung Cave, Yongcheon Cave, Dangcheomul Cave, etc were registered as natural legacy of the world with Sungsan Ilchulbong in Mt. Halla in 2007. As such, it is very valuable as sightseeing place and academic place. As Gujwa-eup is well known for wind in windy Jeju Island, it is built as demonstration complex of wind force power generation. Moving along 'Kimnyung-Handong Coastal Road' from Kimnyung Beach located on the coast in Kimnyung-ri Gujwa-eup to Handong-ri, travelers can find white and large windmill for power generation that stand high beside the road. The windmills are built in the demonstration complex of wind force power generation. Based on Gujwa-eup that has such spectacles, amusement and foods, this edition will introduce Abuoreum which is famous for Manjang Cave, Bijarim and the filming site of movie and drama.

The primitive forest with wind sound -Bijarim

Making the worlds largest stock site of a single tree, Bijarim was designated as natural monument No. 374 in 1993. It was fixed as one of the treasures in Jeju Island long time ago. As a long and oval forest located between south Darangsuioreum (382m) and north Dotoreum (287m), Bijarim is Gotjawal area which is almost plain. Gotjawal is the own language of Jeju which refers to natural forest formed on the rock after lava flows. Called Bijagot for long time, Bijarim is a place where tree and vine grow together. Analyzing the letter, () of Nutmeg tree, its feature and use can be found promptly. The leaf of Nutmeg tree which stretches in sharp-pointed shape on both sides on the axis of branch resembles . Then, the letter() meaning box is added to express the use of Nutmeg tree which is proper to make diverse types of furniture including Baduk board. Finally, is added to make the letter, (). Called 'Forest of 1,000 years', Bijarim is the largest forest of Nutmeg tree in the world, namely, some 2,800 Nutmeg trees over 500 years old exist in the area of 448,000. It takes one and half hour to wall along all glades- 3.2km going and returning. If you visit Jeju, why dont you walk in the forest of Nutmeg tree that keeps the aroma of time, forgetting the flowing time for a while?

The mystery of lava cave in Geomunoreum Manjang Cave

As one of the caves belonging to lava cave in Geomunoreum, Manjang Cave (Natural Monument, No. 98) has length of 7.4km, cave that has well developed partial multi-layered structure. As ceiling is sunk at the center of cave, 3 entrances are built. Travelers can view lava flowstone, lava toe and lava streamline in the cave. They can also view gigantic cupola, i.e., ceiling becomes high and concave at the part where path becomes narrow and wide. As lighting and information board are installed from the entrance of cave to the end of viewing path, the public can view cave without knowledge in volcanic topography and lava cave. They can be further informed by Manjang Cave Publicity Hall which is separately prepared. Any tourists visiting Manjang Cave for the first time exclaim on its scale and size at the entrance of cave. The lava stalactic column (stone pillar) of the largest scale in the world (height 7.6m) that they meet at the end of open section of Manjang Cave is the essence of Manjang Cave. As such, it presents visitors the strong impact, namely, the experience to meet bright light in the dark and humid cave.

Filming site of the film and -Abuoreum

Visiting Gunyoung Meadow at Songdang-ri Gujwa-eup Jeju-si, travelers meet oreum(parasitic volcano). This place is Abuoreum well known for the film Lee Jae Sus riot. It is too small to be called oreum (parasitic volcano), namely 301.4m above the sea level and height, 51m. Although travelers can reach the peak of this low oreum (parasitic volcano) in just 10 minutes by walking slowly, the scene of Jeju seen from this peak is far spectacular than expectation. As the circumference is some 2Km, it takes 30 minutes to walk around the circumference after climbing to the peak. Thus, this oreum(parasitic volcano) is not high, but wide. Walking slowly the circumference of Abuoreum at the peak, travelers can enjoy viewing the watercolor scene of cryptomeria forest planted at the center of oreum(parasitic volcano) and Mt. Halla that contacts the sky at distance. Walking the circumference of Abuoreum, the travelers naturally wish to go to cryptomeria forest that surrounds crater. As the goal of climbing a mountain is to reach its peak, it may be natural to find crater of oreum (parasitic volcano) when climbing oreum (parasitic volcano). However, it is not easy to climb down to the crater of Abuoreum. As shrub including Chinese evergreen oak grows thickly at the center of the path to crater, they have to repeat climbing up and down if climbing down arbitrarily. Although paths made by people are seen here and there, they are also disconnected by thorny shrub. To climb down to the crater of Abuoreum, it is required to move to the opposite part along circumference after reaching the peak of oreum (parasitic volcano). As there are not so many thorny shrubs, they can reach crate if finding path. Further, long sleeve and long trousers are recommended to climb down to the crater of Abuoreum so as to protect skin from thorny shrub. Reaching the center of crater through cryptomeria forest planted around crater, the impression is quite different from that of the scene seen at the peak. The only visible objects are cryptomeria forest surrounding travelers, the slant of Abuoreum and sky. It is time for travelers to be utterly embraced by Abuoreum. No sound except intermittent birds song is heard in Abuoreum. If climbing down alone, you may feel solitude and tranquility as if you were completely disconnected from the world, causing even slight fear. However, the complicated and noisy modern mens mundane heart may envy the humble life of farmer who might farm with ox in this crater which was said to be the field of someone before this crater is covered with planed shrub and cryptomeria and the door to world was closed.

Small, but never small, Abuoreum is one of the very special Jeju oreum(parasitic volcano) that can be easily climbed and have many hidden attractions. Sitting on the Tree of love song of gentle breeze of Jang Dong Geon/Goh So Young, taking picture for memory, memorizing the film < Lee Jae Sus riot > in the crater of Abuoreum, pondering while walking around circumference of Abuoreum crater will be surely be special reminiscence that you can make while visiting Jeju.
