Blaise Schaefer8th Grader at Saint Theresa Catholic SchoolYou are involved with a lot of activities at school, tell us about them all. Well, currently at school I am a part of the school choir, which means I sing at every Wednesday Mass. I’m our Student Council Secretary, which comes with all sorts of responsibilities. I’m also a member of the National Junior Honors Society (NJHS), which means I tutor occasionally to other students at the school. I help out with a lot of the events at our school like the auction and fall festival, as well as get involved in the sports programs. I’m playing basketball right now for the school… don’t ask how that’s going (we’re 0-4)!

Which do you think is your favorite? My favorite would be torn from choir and Student Council. Both offer me really good opportunities to get involved in school and church life. I really have used choir to become incredibly involved in our school’s usage of our church (I know how to set up the whole church for a mass) but Student Council offers a lot of ways to get involved with the school as well. I just really like being able to help out in every way possible.

Tell us about your involvement in your school musical? I was in our school’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last year, playing the role of one of Joseph’s brothers: Issachar. I had a solo for a depressing song with a heavy French accent. Thanks to our director, Terry Temple, the show was a huge success that even won an award in a youth theater organization. I plan on being a part of Mr. Temple’s next production in the spring, but we don’t know what it will be yet.

What do you love the most about STCS?  I love the teachers and staff and STCS the most. Without them nothing would really be possible. They’re some of the nicest people I know. The community is also amazing and worth note here. The parents of my grade are so generous with their time and talent to put together things like our Christmas dance last Friday.

What do you think is the hardest part about juggling extra circulars and still being an honor student? Just giving up the time to do it. I like to have fun with all of the extra-curricular programs and still manage good grades. You have to give more time and effort. Staying after school until 4:30 for basketball doesn’t mean you’re going to have less homework when you get home. You just have to be willing to give up some of that free time you might be used to having.

What general advice do you give to students that you are tutoring?  To always give it their best. You may hate what you’re doing, but not doing your best is only going to hurt you later.

Is there anything else that you want to add that our readers may not know about you?  I think my friends are one of the greatest gifts I have, as well as my family and my beautiful ranch in Montana where I spend every summer and get to meet great new people. I never want to lose any of them. Z

Always give it your best... not doing your best is only going to hurt you later.

HOLIDAY CONCERTThere’s nothing like school concerts for the holidays.

Bringing the family together, supporting the students, teachers, and the arts, and celebrating the holidays

as a community. For some families going to their school’s holiday or Christmas concert is almost as traditional as Thanksgiving dinner. The season would not be same without all the cheesy holiday lyrics, quirky dress-codes, odd but symbolic staging, and the sound of developing voices doing their best to make you proud.

Since the Holiday concert has become such an annual routine at CEE, Mr. Cruz does his best to make CEE’s Holiday concerts anything but routine.

What was your favorite thing about putting together the Holiday Concert?E.W.: My favorite thing was having fun learning the dance moves and learning the songsN.B.: I liked the choreography and the team effort.K.W.: It was really exciting and I liked the team effortC.J.: My favorite part was learning the songs and moves because we had to show the audience how much work we put into it.M.G.: The fact that we got to learn choreographyK.J.: Everything I just have so much fun with these things. Are you excited for the Spring Concert?E.W: Yes, I am very excited because I loved all the other concerts.A: I am very excited about the next concert because I know that Mr. Cruz is going to plan something amazing!E.J.: - I am soooo excited for the spring concert.A: Yes, I’m ecstatic and I’m counting the days.K.J.: - Yes because I get to do the songs and get to help with the costumes.L.N.: - Yes, I am excited to see what we do next concertA.M.: - OH! YEAH!!! How do you think the audience liked the show? Do you get stage fright?

C.J.: - I think the audience enjoyed the concert. I did not get stage fright at all because I just think I’m in the choir room and no one is there.M.K.: I asked my parents and they said it was the best concert yet. I get stage fright sometimes.L.N.: I think they liked it a lot. I also don’t really get scared because I am with all my friends.J.B.: I think the audience thought we sounded great! No, I don’t get stage fright, after the solo I got last year I am not afraid of anything that involves people. What did you family think of the concert?A: I think my family loved the concert because they were so proud of me.G.H.: My family was in Awe!M.C.: They said it was great and awesome!A.: My family was shocked at how good it was.K.J.: They loved it, they always love coming to my performances.J.B.: My family loved it. They thought the choir sounded the best! Z

“I treat the holiday concerts at CEE almost like a showcase with the different grades. I don’t give the entire school a central theme; instead I give a theme to each grade so it leaves room for variety… I always aim high, almost too high sometimes, but because I do so, I know that no matter what the students will be amazing. They will rise to the occasion. I expect a lot out of my students and after the successes of last year’s concerts they know that in the end all their hard work will be paid off the moment they step on that stage.” -Mr. Joseph Kozma-Cruz, Music Instructor

Resources to help bolster education are plentiful

Pencils are being sharpened and notebooks stashed in backpacks as the second half of the school year gets under way in Arizona. It’s this time of year when

excitement among students starting a brand-new course load is at a fever pitch. But beyond excitement, students may find themselves filled with anxiety as they journey into new areas of study that are unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory. As a teacher, there’s nothing worse than knowing a student is too nervous to tell you he doesn’t understand a concept or needs extra help. Whether stymied by algebraic equations or crafting an essay, it’s important to consider the wide range of resources to tackle the most challenging topics – from math and science to English and social studies.

Among them: Teachers: Often what should be the first stop for struggling students becomes a last resort. Teachers spend a lifetime learning how to deliver complex lessons to a variety of learners. Methods that explain a concept to a visual learner don’t necessarily translate to someone who needs to see the theory in

action. If a student seeks greater clarification, the teacher may be able to explain the lesson using a different approach. Tutoring programs: Schools offer a variety of resources when it comes to tutoring programs. From individual to group sessions, most schools offer teaching and learning sessions before or after school, or during lunch. Students could also benefit from additional resources available to their schools. For instance, Grand Canyon University faculty members offer free math tutoring to their students through a volunteer Pi It Forward program. In addition, the university hosts a Learning Lounge for Alhambra High School that pairs outstanding GCU students with AHS students for free after-school tutoring and study sessions. Students have access to tutoring offices, a computer lounge, and a comfortable team-learning environment where students can receive assistance from their tutors, borrow iPads and complete assignments. Online resources: The prevalence of the Internet as an education delivery vehicle is undeniable, offering a variety of

videos and learning modules. Dr. Ted Coe, the assistant dean of GCU’s College of Education, suggests several useful sites that can explain everything from introductory math to advanced courses. If students are looking for the Google of mathematics, wolframalpha.com is a great resource. It allows users the chance to enter math problems in regular language and get precise, detailed answers. The website allows three free step-by-step solutions per day. Beyond that, it simply provides final solutions. For specific lessons, CK12.org may be a better option. With a vast library of resources and a handy search feature, students can track progress on individual skills through the Kahn Academy’s (khanacademy.org) knowledge map after creating a free account. For Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards, illustrativemathematics.org is a go-to resource. This site lays out challenging practice problems that will stretch a student’s reasoning and modeling skills. Bottom line: No problem is too big to explain, and help is available at every turn, for every type of learner.

Liberty Arts Academy’s 6th grade class has been working diligently on their community service project this year, in support of our troops overseas. They are putting together individual care packages that include small hygiene products and non-perishable food items. They have also coordinated small school-wide fundraisers to collect funding for flat-rate postage, and will be sending the packages off to our troops in Afghanistan an Iraq. Our school prides itself on displaying kind, caring and respectful attitudes. What better way to demonstrate these character traits! This project is very close to our 6th grade teacher’s heart, Ms. Dangel. Her son-in-law, Nathan Martens, was killed in Afghanistan just 8 days after he arrived. He was a Corpsman assigned to a marine group as well as a husband, father, and son. The 6th graders have also been working on their writing skills by creating and sending letters to these great men and women. We are hoping that our care packages will boost their spirit overseas, as well as set a positive example of human kindness for our students.

Which one has been your favorite so far? My favorite place I danced at was in New Mexico for the cultural center. The older people were real nice to me and gave me hugs. One lady gave me a scarf because she liked my dancing. Z

SPRING SEASON STARTS SOON!Dr. Tim Ham, Madison

School District Superintendent,

has been selected as Arizona’s Superintendent of the Year and will be the Arizona representative to the American Association of School Administrator’s (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year award selection committee. The award was presented during a luncheon at the Arizona School Boards Association/Arizona School Administrators Annual Conference at the Biltmore Conference Center on Thursday, December 12, 2013.

Dr. Ham initiated a “Systems Approach” when he joined the district as superintendent in July 2007 to focus on quality assurance and continuous improvement. Ham’s colleagues praise his leadership, citing his “effectiveness through seeking first to understand, ethical and moral conduct and leadership development.” “Working with Dr. Ham is like an internship in excellence,” said Jay Mann, Madison’s Director for Communications, “his transparency, ethics, deep questioning, and desire to develop others as leaders has a way of bringing out the best in all around him.”

Ham’s leadership skills can be articulated best through his actions and results in achievement in the Madison Elementary School District. An urban district located in central Phoenix, Madison is comprised of eight schools serving nearly 6,000 students, with 45% of its population receiving free and reduced lunch. Madison has earned the distinction of being the only elementary district in Phoenix to be “A” rated by the Department of Education and is the first and only elementary district in Arizona to become “Internationally Accredited” through AdvancED. Rainbow loommaDneSSWritten by: Dominick Sirianni

If you kids are like mine, rubber band bracelets may have filled your shopping lists this year. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are boys or girls - if they are under ten, they’re addicted to the Rainbow Loom.

I took comfort in knowing our eight year old Connnor was into something other than video games. We support his Rainbow Loom addiction. We wear the bracelets he gives us and keep him stocked with supplies. I’m even planning to help him upload a YouTube video of him showing kids how to use them. At eight, he doesn’t think he’s really accomplished anything unless he has his own YouTube video of it.

Connor is a very process-oriented kid. That’s a nice way of saying he displays subtle tendencies some people would define as OCD.  I think the process of putting together rubber band bracelets appeals to him. He looks at it like a puzzle. I like the engineering aspect. First you do this, then you do this, then you use your tool to take a third step. Do that several times and you have something of value. It’s a learning tool for us. If your in a similar boat here’s a helpful hint - the $.99 stores have the best deal on extra rubber bands and S clips. If your kids really take to this, you’ll need to find extra bands and clips to keep them building. Z

Q. I’m excited about college, but worried about the

cost. How do I get financial aid?

A. Earning your degree or certificate at Scottsdale Community College means

you are getting one of the best educational values in the nation. However, even though tuition at SCC remains more affordable than tuition at state or private institutions, many students still require some form of financial aid.

Financial Aid is meant to supplement your family’s ability to pay for college costs and eligibility will depend on your demonstrated financial need and other requirements. Most financial aid comes from the state and federal government and can consist of grants, loans, student employment, and scholarships to help meet a student’s cost of attendance.

There are many factors affecting eligibility for financial aid. As a result, students should apply for financial aid every year, even if they don’t think they will qualify. Financial aid is available for full time as well as part time students.

The first step for everyone is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is online at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. You’ll also want to be sure and submit any requested information to the SCC Financial Aid Office by

the priority deadline in order to have your application reviewed before the tuition due date. Financial aid applications received after the deadline will still be considered for aid, but students will not receive their award letter until after the start of the semester.

If you file after the priority date, you should be prepared to use your own funds to pay for tuition and fees prior to the tuition due date. You may opt to use the Payment Plan to hold your classes until your financial aid application can be processed.
