President’s Report

A big thank you to everyone for participating in the 2017-2018 season for the East Malvern Tooronga Cricket Club, on and off the field! From the Milo cricketers through to the 1st XI in the ECA B Turf Grand Final, a community club like ours is all about participating – getting in and having a go. And once again this season we did that in spades.

And a special mention to those contributing off the field, whether on your Committee or simply helping out. No club can function without the huge effort that the volunteers put in. Speaking of volunteers, Carl Carter was the deserving winner of the best club man award this year. It was good to recognise one of those quiet achievers who do an amazing amount of work behind the scenes to keep the club running smoothly. There are many others too. You know who you are. Thanks! On the field we had some great results. First up the 13 & Under girls pulled off a flag in the first year of the competition, followed up by the mighty Under 13A Sunday boys, undefeated through the season and premiers. The MCA C Sunday team also won their grand final. Great work lads! Honourable mentions also to 1st XI, ECA B Turf grand finalists, MCA B, who made the finals, and the Women’s team who pulled off a win at the end of the season. Well done girls! Off field we had challenges around the unavailability of Dunlop Pavilion at DW Lucas Oval, closed for redevelopment. This deprived the club of its traditional focal point, which negatively impacted revenue. On the flip side, we expect to be in a spectacular newly refurbished pavilion during the upcoming summer season, which will be a huge positive. Your Committee is working to ensure we take full advantage of our new home, running plenty of club activities in the new space. We need this to boost cash flow, which is critical given the Club (with the other tenant clubs, the East Malvern Football Club and the East Malvern Junior Football Club) is contributing substantial funds to the redevelopment (with Stonnington Council). So please get involved!! I would also like to thank our great group of sponsors in 2017-2018 – Bendigo Bank East Malvern, Options Consulting Group, Jellis Craig and Malvern East Physiotherapy. We couldn’t do it without you! Yours in cricket Roland

Treasurers Report and Financial Statements Season 2017/18 : Andrew Hind

The 2017/18 financial year was a challenging one for the club, which saw a $3,186 deficit for the period in contrast to a $9,637 operating surplus last year. This was due to a combination of factors; both a decrease in revenue and an increase in cricket operating expenditure as a result of recruiting a 2nd paid player for the season. The unique circumstance of not having access to the main social club facility due to the redevelopment of Dunlop Pavilion contributed substantially to the decrease in ancillary revenue (Bar, Canteen & Merchandise). However, there was also a substantial decrease in bar and canteen revenue on Friday nights from T20 Blast and Milo In2Cricket. A change in accounting treatment for club merchandise to a commission basis meant revenue from merchandise decreased $5,000 and the costs decreased accordingly. A noticeable revenue item is the net contribution from fundraising activities. At $5,629 the club will need to increase the contribution from this source of revenue to meet the rising operating costs and financial commitments to the Dunlop Development, and reduce the reliance on subscriptions and match fees. As mentioned, cricket expenditure increased this year mainly due to the recruitment of a second professional player. This was an important investment by the club and has been continued for the next season. The club must now generate sustainable revenue sources to meet this increased expenditure. During the year the club acquired a loan facility of $50,000 to meet our 2nd instalment of funding to the Dunlop Pavilion redevelopment. This is on top of the 1st instalment of $40,000 paid last year via a grant from Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria. The club will pursue a substantial fundraising programme to pay down this facility in the coming years. The club is still in negotiations with Stonnington Council regarding the timing and exact amount of the 2nd instalment. During the year the club secured funding from the State Government and the Stonnington Council to upgrade the cricket training nets at Waverley Oval, which were completed and re-opened before the completion of the season. The club also secured a $2,000 grant from Cricket Australia’s Growing Cricket for Girls fund for our Girls cricket programme, which contributed towards specialist coaching and cricket equipment. After a financially challenging year the club is in a strong position take advantage of the many opportunities that the redeveloped Dunlop Pavilion presents from next season. Andrew Hind Treasurer

SENIOR ONFIELD REPORTS- SEASON 2017/18

NOTES : FIRSTS TO FOURTHS IN ECA SATURDAY TWO DAY COMPETITION.

OTHER TEAMS AS NOTED WITH REPORTS.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS POINTS TABLE FINAL PAGE

1ST ELEVEN REPORT: Mark Nelson

After a disappointing 2017/18 season and relegation to B Turf, and with a new captain in Teddy Sampath, the 1st XI made a clear statement of intent in the first game of the season - 300 in 40 overs (with 164 from Teddy) and a convincing victory. It was a sign of the positive, attacking cricket that would take us all the way to the grand final.

Unfortunately we weren't able to achieve the ultimate success with a premiership, beaten by a very disciplined, well-drilled Mont Albert team in the grand final. It was unfortunate that our worst batting performance came in that match - the inconsistency in our batting that had been evident during the season cost us in the end.

However, there were plenty of positives to take out of the season, in particular the development of the young players in the team, who will form the nucleus of the club for years to come. Teddy's focus on playing for the team, hard work and good preparation will hopefully be carried forward in future seasons.

Whilst the team's batting was explosive at times, it was the bowling that consistently won us games. There was a very even spread of contributors, with seven bowlers taking 10 or more wickets - it's been a long time since that has happened at EMTCC.

There were plenty of individual highlights during the season, including Teddy's 3 hundreds, James Smith's century against Burwood (brought up off the last ball of the innings), David Majtlis' 5 wickets in the final from 30 overs unchanged (winning him the Player of the Match award) and Nisal's demolition of Canterbury with the ball. It was no surprise to see Teddy win the batting average (with a whopping 837 runs), whilst David picked up the bowling award with 25 wickets, a great achievement after taking only one wicket before Christmas.

Hopefully the 1st XI can go one better in season 2018/19 and regain a position in A Turf.

2ND ELEVEN REPORT: DAN JARVIS

So close, yet so far. Another season of what might have been for the 2nd XI, an entire season and potential finals campaign was compressed into 80 overs on the last Saturday of the season. Unfortunately the excellent work that the team had done to get ourselves into that position was undone in the space of 31.4 overs and a meagre total of 65 runs. While this was a frustrating way to end the season and one that I’m sure none of players will care to remember for too long, we should use it for motivation for season 2018/19 where I believe we can go one better and represent EMTCC in a finals campaign. The 2nd XI finished the season with 6 wins and 8 losses which in itself was a fine achievement and improvement on the 5 wins that were achieved in the previous two seasons. 31 players represented the 2nd’s this season and as if often the case it was a mix of exuberant youth & seasoned experience that graced the field. The great thing about captaining such a great mix of players is that you get to see first-hand the development of some of our exciting & up & coming junior prospects – Tom Fish, Joshua Salmon, William Giles, Justin Baumgarten, Lachlan Carter, Jack Duncan, James Smith & Thomas Schofield. Not only did these players make regular appearances, they performed to the best of their ability and on more than one occasion got the team over the line for a much needed victory. Individual Performances Two players scored centuries in the one season in a first for the 2nd XI & our bowling attack was spearheaded by Shayne Moore (19 wickets @ 12.16) and Joshua Salmon (14 wickets @ 13.07) Daniel Jarvis 119 v North Balwyn Jol Dimock 106 v Donvale Shayne Moore 4/6 v North Balwyn Shayne Moore 4/9 v Ashwood Next season I’d love to see more players reach individual brilliance and tap into the talent that they harness. The motto for the 2nd XI was for each player to win a match themselves and to not have to rely on the same people each week - we are not far away off achieving this.

In closing I’d like to acknowledge a few individuals who I leaned on throughout the year for advice on selection, game day tactics & all round cricket smarts. Darren Buckley, Jol Dimock and Shayne Moore have all played cricket for many years and took time out from their own games to assist & educate me during the season – The lessons were appreciated and the advice taken on-board. Rory Stewart as chairman of selectors has a thankless task and I loved his passion and motivations to not only get a team on the park but the best team possible on a week to week basis Graeme & Josh Salmon were more often than not the ones that opened up the rooms on a Saturday morning, gave the pitch a roll & assisted with covers when no one else could. The work that you both did helped me out immensely and for that I’m grateful. To all the players who represented the 2nd XI, I hope you enjoyed your cricket this season and were able to improve your own individual games. I look forward to leading & playing with you all again in 2018/19. Daniel Jarvis 2nd XI Captain

3RD ELEVEN REPORT: PETER LEERSON captain

Results wise it was not a great season for the 3rd XI. Whilst we remained competitive in many games the club just didn't have the depth to sustain the 3rds in E Turf. At full strength we could have competed for finals, as indicated by our early season form, but realistically it was a stretch for our young bowling attack to knock over such mature opposition teams. Leachy was a stand out with the bat but we only got 7 innings out of him and John Murphy was great with bat and ball but could only fit in 4 games with us. Also Tom Murphy's 4/41 v St Barnabas augurs well for the future. The thirds side that won the flag in 2015 in F Turf has produced 5 1st XI players subsequently and I'm confident the ability to develop players at a slightly lower level will prove beneficial for the club once again.

4TH ELEVEN REPORT: MIKE FOGARTY

It was a season of lows and then highs for the fourths in 17/18. We were a real development team with junior players including George Delimitrou, Phoenix Maillard, Tom Fish and Anthony Wilkes contributing through the season, and benefitting by their seniors experience to move up the grades by end of season. Unfortunately though we lost a couple of close ones pre Xmas and turned for home with only 2 wins. Enter the LOC side, or at least the nucleus of them. Difficulties with numbers meant closure of that synthetic team and that those wanting a regular game now came to us. This influx made us a very competitive unit and we won the last three games to miss out on the finals on percentage. Standout player was Nicholas Crossley who, while only managing 131 in 7 innings on the synthetic, fired on turf with 201 from 4 knocks averaging 50. The turf surface also suited his off spin with 8 wkts coming his way. All in all another enjoyable season in the fourths.

SYNTHETIC – One Day LOC 3:

KIERAN HEALEY – Captain

The team struggled for players all year before we had to pull out of the competition in late January. This really was the end of a very successful era that stretched back into the pre amalgamation East Malvern club in the SDCCL and included three premierships. Although this was sad the merging of the LOC with our Fourths has made for more enjoyable cricket for those looking to play.

MCA B SUNDAY REPORT : LACHLAN SMITH - captain

The B Sunday team should be very proud of their efforts. Led well by Lachie Smith, the way the young guys play as a team is incredible. to end in 3rd spot. Unfortunately Monash took it away from us in the semi but it was a great season. Travis again starred with the bat there were many solid contributors, led by Travis Fidock , Shayne Moore Lachie Smith, Josh Tallent and DJ Saini. Shayne Morre was outstanding with the ball this year with 32 wkts, closely followed by Lachie Smith, Pasan and Nisal, and Joel Matheson. Bowling was generally tight and the fielding good, It is very pleasing that the majority of players in this side are young and the team improved in all facets this year. This side has the ability to win the premiership next year.

MCA C SUNDAY REPORT : JOSH SALMON - captain

BACK TO BACK. A magnificent season for the MCA C team, following up its Premiership last season in D Grade with another flag in C Grade. Ably captained again by Josh Salmon, featuring several returning premiership players and strengthened by the addition of fresh young talent (and their dads), the team finished on top of the ladder with 14 wins from 20 games (4 draws, 2 losses). It’s a fair assessment to say that our batting overall lacked some consistency, however there were several highlights: an 8th-wicket partnership of 148 between Lachie Arneil (92*) and Tom Sutherland (52*) in round 17, along with other excellent individual performances during the season (Justin Baumgarten 89*, Ryan Pietsch 87* and Lachie Carter 77). It was the strength of our bowling and fielding that made us hard to beat though. Only once did the opposition manage to score more than 150, and eight times we bowled teams out for under 100. Seven bowlers took at least 14 wickets each (including four bags of 5), with three of those being our leggies Jack Duncan (14 @ 14.9), Tom Murphy (15 @ 9.5) and Henry Kemp (17 @ 13.7). Our Semi-final was an anti-climax, bowling an undermanned Batmans Hill out for 36 after making 161, however the Grand-final made up for it. Batting first we made 8/142, a score that we weren’t comfortable with but felt should be enough. A slow start from Carnegie had us confident, but some steady middle/lower-order batting saw them in a good position with a handful of overs left. A couple of batting brain-fades coupled with some cool outfield catching saw the classic scenario of one over, one wicket, six runs, and a suicidal attempt at a quick single gave us the trophy. In summary, an enjoyable season for all involved. The boys developed a strong team spirit and made the most of their opportunities with bat and/or ball, and the dads (John Murphy, James Sutherland, James Baumgarten, Ed Kemp) had a lot of fun playing with and mentoring the young’uns, whilst staying (for the most part) injury-free!

MCA D SUNDAY REPORT : MATT DAWSON - captain

So the D-Grade Sunday got off to a slow start with a T20 against Carnegie where we were beaten despite new recruit Y. Sohail hitting an amazing 67, the following week we had another fairly dismal performance with the bat going all out for 81. Having said that, we managed to hit a new low the week after only making 76 chasing after 115 put on the scoreboard by Bentleigh. Again the highlight was Yousaf Sohail hitting a

lovely 40, plus Stephen Whitaker taking 4/17 off his 6 overs. We got our first win as we took on Carnegie again at their home ground and chased down 201 with Aoun Hassan top scoring with a magical 80 and Sheru Uddin hitting 40. However, our optimism was short lived getting thumped the following week 230 to 102, though we did reveal an unexpected bowler in M. Dawson taking 2/12 from his 3 overs late in the game. Round 6 was a stellar week for us taking down Monash Uni as we piled on 160 to their 105 with Sheru Uddin making 30, his brother Shah making 39 and S. Whitaker 37 and an incredible bowling performance from J. Parker taking 4/10 off his 7 overs. Round 10 saw us hit a new low only making 49 which of course was easily overshadowed by Youlden Parkville making 171, although the round did see Aoun Hassan take 6/14 in his 9 overs so we had some good news. Round 11 I wasn’t present, but we lost anyway the highlight being W. Stokes hitting 43 and Shah Uddin taking 4/20. Round 12 was also a doozy as I wasn’t there until after the game started at which point we lost 4 quick wickets so it was probably better I hadn’t showed up. Though new recruit Jatin put on a classy 43 n.o. and R. Burt took 3/13. Anyhow, we recovered well and in Round 13 we came away with a 4 wickets in hand win against TTS, with A. Reddy hitting a match winning 48 n.o. Round 15 was a round that gutted us completely playing in temperatures well above 35 degrees we lost by a solitary run after collapsing from 4/127 to 10/151. Then we were back in Round 16 to snatch a good win over Canterbury with an epic innings from A. Reddy who decimated their attack smashing 94 on his way to the airport to pick up family. Plus Shah and A. Chaudry both made 37 at the top of the order as well. Round 17 saw us dispatch South Yarra with an amazing rearguard action from M. Dawson (32 n.o.) and S. Whitaker (44 n.o.) batting at 10 and 9 respectively. Round 18 on our illustrious captains birthday started well when he elected to bat and opened the batting with wonderful 62 with good support from Shah Uddin (37), T. Ison (34) and Sheru Uddin (42 n.o.). We were then on a roll and continued our winning streak with a good win over Brighton with a good all round team performance. We then proceeded to win our 4th in a row against SYCC with another great all round team performance in our final game of the season. Unfortunately, other results didn’t go our way and we ended up 6th on the ladder missing finals by about 2 wins. This being said it was a fantastic season with some amazing performances and also a great bunch of up and coming young guns coming through the ranks which gives me a lot of positivity for the upcoming season in 2018/19. Matt Dawson (D-Grade Sunday Captain)

JUNIOR SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18 was again a most successful season for EMTCC junior Section.

MILO - Friday Evenings: Season 2017/18 - EMTCC In2Cricket and T20 Blast

The 2017/18 season for In2Cricket and T20 Blast was highly successful. Again we based this program at Waverley Oval. The view of Waverley Oval, covered in 150 five to ten year olds was magnificent! The EMTCC In2Cricket and T20 Blast is one the state’s most successful. We have an excellent relationship with Cricket Australia. Through this we were able to provide selected In2Cricketers and T20 Blasters opportunities to play games on the MCG as part of the pre game build up to the BBL and WBBL.

In2Cricket This season we had 51 registered In2Cricket participants. The program continues to be hugely successful thanks to the coordination of Wazza Wheatley. Wazza continues to plan and instigate sessions which are focused on the participants, their enjoyment and development. Brett Shemmell and Diana Gilbert again supported Wazza this year. We greatly appreciated their efforts. Of course, most importantly, Rachel Fidock and Claudia Shemmell, both members of the EMTCC girls’ side, again volunteered their time for the provision of the program. Rachel and Claudia showed excellent leadership and enthusiasm and the young participants really enjoyed their support. Thanks girls!

T20 Blast The 2017/18 season was a landmark one for our T20 Blast Waverley Centre. For the first time the centre was a wholly EMTCC affair. We had 90 registered players across 10 teams. Again, one of these teams was a girls’ team. Thank you to our team managers who ran the games efficiently. This year, Oscar Sargeant was appointed by CA to be responsible for delivering the program. Oscar stepped into this role after 2 years in the CA support role ensuring that the grounds and equipment were set up as well as overseeing the skill zone activities. In addition, he mentored Lachie Carter who volunteered his time in the support role. I thank Oscar and Lachie for their efforts across the season.

I also want to thank the army of volunteers who ensured that EMTCC Friday nights continued to be a smooth operation. Thanks to Noel Fidock whose work around registration and gear distribution is vital. Thanks to Mike Fogarty who again coordinated the kitchen. Our thanks also to Carl Carter, Pete Leerson, Andrew Hind, Cheryl Carter and Janine Smith who helped out in this area. Thanks to Travis Fidock, Anthony Leach, Andrew Hind and Noel Fidock who all staffed the bar.

The efforts of all those who contributed to the organisation of our junior programs were again rewarded with a substantial increase in participation numbers at our Milo in2Cricket and T20Blast programs. The move of these programs to Friday nights at Lucas has been a great success with over 150 boys and girls now registered.

Socially we have been hosting well over 150 for drinks and snacks after each Friday night session. A great Club and community atmosphere has been developed. Make sure you get down there.

Junior Teams

With solid numbers registering for our ten under age ISEC or AGCC teams, two finals appearances highlighted an excellent overall performance by the club’s younger members.

We ran 12 junior teams - 4 x U11, 3 x U13 , 3 x U15 Boys 1 x16 and 13 & Under All Girls, playing in ISEC

· 3 teams played finals cricket (noting there are no U11 finals)

· Again many of our junior players, both boys and girls, were chosen in representative teams for Australia, State, Regional, Sub District and Association

The continuing success of our under age girls sides in the AGCC Spartan competition has been terrific. A highlight has been the establishment of a girls 13 & Under team coached by Baz Arscott and assisted by Joelle Buckley.and they won the inaugural flag for this new comp.Our16 & Under team also performed well throughout the season. competition, This was a terrific outcome of hard work put in by club supporters. Special thanks again to Diana Gilbert for her work and managing the 16 & Under team and to Noel Fidock for his coaching work with the team.

The success of our junior teams can be measured in many ways; the number of finals played, the number of premierships won, the number of players being selected for representative sides, the number of players selected in EMTCC senior teams (22 juniors played senior cricket for a total of 147 games), but the

overarching measure is the number of kids enjoying and having fun playing cricket. To this end our junior program aims to provide an experience for all kids to enjoy and learn the fun of cricket and no matter their individual skill level have the appropriate pathway for them to move along. Our juniors, through all our alliances (e.g. Prahran Cricket Club, ISEC, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, Sub District Clubs) can truly move from the yellow cap of Milo through to the Baggy green cap of either the Men’s or Women’s Australian teams.

The programs offered by our junior section is only possible due to the hard working volunteers, mostly parents, to whom the club extends its thanks for their many hours of service. Special thanks goes to Wazza Wheatley for again taking on the Milo in2cricket program supported by Brett, and to Michael Sargeant, for taking on the T20Blast program, supported by Lachie Carter,Josh Tallent and Oscar Sargeant, Thanks also to all of those parents and senior players who took on a coaching role. In addition there were a band of parents that took on the responsibilities of team managers. We thank them all for their continued support.

In the forthcoming season the club will again be looking to further support our volunteers by providing free access to Level One Coaching to all our team coaches. The club has recently appointed an assistant club Coach with a strengthened brief to support development of juniors. The club’s match selection structures continue to strongly encourage our juniors to play senior cricket as part of their cricketing pathway. MF and Brendan Smith Junior Coordinator 2017/18
