The free, non-profit festival, now in its 48th year, will be held May 21-22 on the streets of Downtown East Lansing. It will showcase painting, ceramics, sculpture, glass, fibers, prints, jewelry, wood, metal and photography. It’s a tradition for people because it’s one of the first festivals of the season, Van Wyck said. An estimated 70,000 people came to the festival last year. This year the focus is more local, Van Wyck explained. Many of the artists and performers are from Michigan. One of the two stages for musicians is dedicated to local bands and artists. Artists range in age from 15 to 92. Each artist must apply and be accepted by a panel of jurors. Nearly 500 applied and 207 were accepted. “The work was really strong this year,” she said. “We turned away a lot.” Because it is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 fine arts festivals in the nation, artists like exhibiting at the fest and want to return each year, according to Van Wyck. While many of the artists have been part of the festival in previous years, 30 percent are first time exhibitors. Of those, seven are part of the Emerging Artists program. This program gives selected participants an opportunity to exhibit at the festival with free booth space. Those selected are up- and-coming in the world of art. Some have just graduated from college, while others are starting out after a career switch. Program participants are also able to have help with the details involved with exhibiting, like set up and pricing. Two of last year’s emerging artists are returning to the festival again this year. The emerging artists are all located in one tent on the corner of Abbot Road and Albert Avenue. Nearby is the children’s area. This includes face painting, hands-on activities and puppets. There will also be two music stages with artists and musicians performing through the duration of the festival. Music ranges from country to jazz, one performer is Tamara Mayers, who is featured on the May issue of Revue Mid Michigan. Several food vendors will be available during the festival, serving some international options for the adventurous patron. The CATA system will be running shuttles every 10 minutes to the festival for $.50 round trip. Anyone who plans to attend can park for free in the lot on Hagadorn and Service Road and take the shuttle. For more earth friendly patrons, there is a complimentary bike valet service available. Bike parking will be located on Albert Street west of Abbot Road. Each year the East Lansing Art Festival inaugurates summer byfilling the downtown streets with art, music, and food.
