It’s official! While it’s still hot, hot, hot, summer is at an end andschool begins Monday, August 18thfor both Pasco and Pinellas Counties! Here are some tips to help make thisthe very best school year for your en-tire family!

Be prepared! It’s fair to say that we spend a lot

of time, effort and money getting ourkids ready to go back to school eachAugust! From backpacks and schoolclothes, to school supplies and elec-tronics, but the real key to a successfulschool year is to stay informed, in-volved and organized!

Did you know that each districtwebsite has a school calendar that’savailable to parents? Putting those im-portant dates onto your calendar is agreat way for families to know exactlywhen to expect teacher planning days, know when the school breaks land, and a great way to decide when totake that family trip out of town!

Another excellent way to stayahead of the game is to go to “Meetthe Teacher” day! This is really anawesome way to start the year out

strong, because it helps your child gainconfidence and it eases first day ofschool jitters! Also, come to “OpenHouse” which usually takes place afew weeks after school starts, and isthe perfect time for your child to showoff some of what they’ve accomplishedso far! The little ones really love show-ing off some of their art projects andhaving you sit at their desk!

Do you have children in middleschool or high school? These events arejust as important for older students!Meet those teachers, follow along withyour child’s schedule, and walk in theirfootsteps for an evening. It’s amazingwhat you’ll learn. Also, it’s a great wayto get on the same page with the teach-ers. As the students get older, theteacher’s expectations rise. It’s good toknow which teacher accepts late assign-ments, for example, and which teacherdoesn’t. If you’re involved and knowthe rules, it helps your child to succeedand take responsibility for their own ef-forts in their education.

Additionally, don’t expect to havea parent/teacher conference at anevent like “Meet the Teacher Day” or“Open House.” These events are verylimited for time, and teachers want toschedule a specific time so that they

can speak to you about your child in aquiet, confidential manner. Also, it’salso important to give your teachersome time for early assessments tocome in before asking how they aredoing in school, so take heart, don’tworry, and stay positive!

Stay Connected & Get Involved!Don’t forget to make sure that

your child’s teacher has your up-to-date contact information! Staying intouch with your child’s teacher is animportant way to keep on top of anychanges at school, as well as any up-coming events that might not be onthe school calendar like field trips, classparties, and unit tests. Also, take noteof any way that your child’s teacherprefers to be reached. Some teachersprefer phone calls, while others areperfectly happy to communicate viatext or email! The more involved youare, the less likely it is that your childwill fall behind!

Are you able to help out atschool, even a little bit? Become aschool volunteer! Even if you workfull-time and don’t have a lot of timeto spare, being a volunteer is a greatway to help out. There are opportuni-ties throughout the year, and any help

is always appreciated! It’s easy to signup; simply go to the district’s websiteand register as a volunteer. Onceyou’re an approved volunteer, you canbe involved in any capacity that workswith your busy schedule.

Set the Bar High! It’s no secret among educators

that students will rise to the occasionwhen you set the bar high, so do thesame for your children at home! It’sokay to expect A’s! Always encourageyour children to do the very best theycan do on each assignment and test. With all of the drama and politics inthe media about education, it’s oftentempting to throw your hands in theair at times, but what does that teachyour child? Teach them to find the an-swers by asking the right questions,Instead of “I don’t get this!” askthem specifically what they don’t un-derstand. Perhaps it’s multiplicationtables, or algebra, or a paper on thestate of Florida. Regardless, take thetime to help them learn how to do re-search. Teach them how to study byintroducing flash cards, playing edu-cational games, and enticing them tosucceed in a way that makes sense tothem. Once these skills are learned,

they will become more independentand successful!

Guess what? It’s ok if you don’tknow how to do your child’s home-work! Here’s a newsflash: You’re notsupposed to be doing your child’shomework! So how can you helpwhen everything has changed? Well, ask your child to bring textbookshome if they don’t already. If theydon’t know how to do it, you canshow them how to look it up in theirbook (the old fashioned way!). If it’snot in the book, there are plenty of re-sources online related to the CommonCore Curriculum. You can even askfor help from your child’s teacher ifthis is a problem that your child seemsto have on a regular basis. Everyone isbusy and our lives are hectic, buthomework time can be less stressful ifyou schedule a time for it each day,and work to find a balance that worksfor your family.

At homework time, keep a closeeye on their school planner! Don’tjust sign it and hand it back, becausethat’s where all of their important in-formation is supposed to be. If it’sempty, or doesn’t match up with thehomework they are bringing home, look into it. If they “did their home-work already,” make sure to look atit! If used properly, the school plan-

ner is your best gauge for how yourchild is doing in between reportcards, and a great way to communi-cate with the teacher. Some schoolseven have an online database for eachstudent – if that’s the case, make sureto log on regularly!

At the end of the day, you knowyour children best! You know howthey learn, what frustrates them andwhat motivates them, so if you arethere to guide them and teach them, they will overcome any obstacle thatthey face at school.

Stay Positive!Embrace your child’s education as

best as you can! Meet the teachers, and say positive things about themaround your children. Also, say posi-tive things about your children to theirteachers! Be pleasant and upbeat whenyou talk about education, and try tobe patient when you’re helping yourchildren with projects and assign-ments. It’s not easy, but at the end ofthe day, we want our children to havea love for reading, a positive attitudetoward learning, and a good workethic. No one is more essential toyour child’s success than you! So,thank you for all that you do, and havea great school year from your friendsat Neighborhood News & Lifestyles!

Stephanie, a student at DanceEvolutions, said, “Miss Diana createsa fun learning environment for herstudents and is sure to teach themeverything there is to know about thedance industry. She runs her studio ina very efficient way and makes sure sheknows everyone personally that walksthrough the studio doors. Dance Evo-lutions is the best place to be for any-one with a passion for dance thatwants learn, and enjoy learning whilethey’re at it. This studio is like a sec-ond home to me and it truly is thebest in this area.”

Dance Eolutions Puts Safety First! Dance is a sport – it absolutely is!

It takes athleticism, technique, passion, endurance and years of training tocompete with the best of the best. That’s why it’s so important for dancersto learn the proper way to dance fromthe beginning.

Diana says, “With so many newdancers being inspired by the dancecompetition shows on TV, we seepeople trying to copy those experi-enced dancers without learning theproper technique.” To help preventinjuries, Diana installed $25,000worth of Omara Sprung Floors to

allow the dancers to move withoutputting undue pressure on theirknees, backs and ankles. Diana says,“These floors absorb the shock ofjumping and are safer for kids, andthat’s important to me.”

Julia said, “My daughter has beenwith Dance Evolutions for over sevenyears and we could not be happier.Diana’s commitment to her students isremarkable. I would not take mydaughter to another studio becauseDiana ensures that she is safe bothphysically and mentally. Her growth asa dancer is because of Diana’s experi-ence and creativity.”

Committed to dance educationand technique, Dance Evolutions haseight instructors who have the samepassion for safety in their classes. Inaddition to ballet, pointe, modernand ballroom dancing, Dance Evolu-tions also offers tap, jazz, lyrical, con-temporary, musical theater, Latin, swing and tumbling.

While some studios are focusedprimarily on their team students, DanceEvolutions is focused on providing aneducation for everyone, and providingthe opportunity for students to earnscholarships if that’s what they chooseto do. That said, last year, their balletwon the overall high score at one oftheir competitions, so while team may

not be the only thing that Dance Evo-lutions does, they certainly have a solidcompetition track record.

Diana says, “We have a danceteam that we are very proud of! But,our main goal is to prepare dancersto dance professionally. At the end ofthe day, trophies are great, but it is asolid dance education and keepingthem safe and healthy that will helpthem to withstand a dance career inthe end.” She adds, “Dance Evolu-tions is a technique-based school thataims to culminate a joy and love andrespect for the arts, while buildingcamaraderie and friendship.”

Tampa Bay Rays – The Bestof the Best!

Boasting one of the best recordsin the league – including making theplayoffs four times in the past six years– you have more reasons than ever tocome watch the Rays play. In fact, theRays have won more games since2008 than any other team in theleague, with the exception of the Yan-kees – who have won just a handfulmore, despite an astronomical $900-million spending gap between the twoteams. In addition, they have accom-plished five 90-win seasons in the pastsix years, which is more than any otherteam in the MLB, and quite possiblyin the entire sport. So, when you gowatch your home team on the Tropi-cana Field, you truly are watching oneof the best teams in the Nation!

So Much More Than Just ABaseball Team

Your local hometown baseballteam, the Tampa Bay Rays, have be-come a huge part of this communityin more ways than one and as impres-sive as they are on the field, what theydo outside of the stadium is just asamazing! Mentors, teachers, and “he-roes,” the Rays organization providesmuch more than just athleticism andentertainment – they are communityimpact leaders who actively strive tomake a lasting difference in theTampa Bay area.

Taking a hands-on approach tosupporting the community, in addi-tion to the Rays Baseball Foundation,a 501(c)3 non-profit organization thatraises money to help support youtheducation development programming, the players and their wives, as well asmany of the corporate employees, dedicate their time to helping individ-uals, families and organizations in the

community through their numerouscharities, volunteer programs and part-nership affiliations.

“We are really proud to be com-munity impact leaders,” says MarkFernandez, Senior Vice President ofthe Rays Organization. We take ourresponsibility seriously and are alwayslooking to find ways to form mean-ingful partnerships within the com-

munity. Giving away the money is eas-iest part, but the most meaningfulthing that we do, in addition to beingan ongoing funder, is to be activelyengaged in the community.”

An inspiration to our youth, theplayers are a true testament to the no-tion, that if you dream big and workhard, anything is possible. Further-more, in all their success, they also rec-

ognize that giving back is just as im-portant as the sport they play and thatwithout you – their fans, their com-munity – what they have accomplishedwould never have been possible; whichis why they give back to the TampaBay area, not just to show gratitudeand thanks, but because they want tomake a difference in the lives of thosearound them! “At the end of the day,the name on the front of their jerseymeans more than the name on theirback,” says Mark. “When people seeour logo and our brand, I hope we’vedone enough for them to say, ‘that’smy team and those are my guys’. That

means everything to us!” From playing on the field to vol-

We never want things togo wrong, but as life is, it happens. In-surance allows you to cover yourselfand your family in case of incident.More so than ever, the written word ispertinent to protecting yourself andwe are here to help you do it right.”

There is a reason that Jack Fessleradopted the “Don’t Ever Give Up”attitude and decided to live by it. Jackunderwent a life-changing event in1962 at age 20. He was working on astorm sewer pipe when a piece of claywas dropped from a bulldozer andbroke his back in three separate places.Paralyzed and wheelchair bound, Jackknew it was time for a life transforma-tion if he were going to become a suc-cessful man. Jack will tell you that he isliving proof that nothing can stop youfrom succeeding in life. “It takes vi-sion,” says Jack. “Visionary people cansee things and they take all the steps tomake their plan happen. From budg-

eting and sticking to my core values Ihave grown my company from a smallagency to a well respected million dol-lar reputable agency.”

Thirty Years and Counting atFessler

vided by each team member. We lookout for people’s best interest and thatis what has helped us become what weare today.”

More than half of Fessler’s staffhas been with the company for overten years and at least five employeeshave twenty years invested in TheFessler Agency. Jack often rewards hisemployees with incentives and benefitsto do the best job they know how.One year he sent a handful of employ-ees on a shopping spree with a week’spay just because, as Jack says, “theydeserve it all.” Known as a fantastic

boss who truly cares, but will alsopush you to your best like a bulldog,Jack is well-respected and applaudedby his many employees and peers.

“I think it’s time to get back totreating people the way we’d want tobe treated,” says Jack. “We know thatit’s the experience clients receive fromus that makes the difference and setsus apart from other agencies.”

The Fessler Agency strives toleave each client thinking and saying,“Wow! That was great service!”

One client, Villazon & Com-pany, wrote Fessler saying, “Youwalked us through each step of theclaim compilation and filing process. When negotiations hit the proverbial

snag, you cleared up the stalemateand negotiated a fair settlement, thatput Villazon in the same position asit would have been had the disasternot occurred. The promises youmade when you became our agentwere more than amply fulfilled. orthodontic care affordable to all.We will miss our visits to his office.Dr. Albert Family Orthodonticscomes highly recommended in thishousehold.”

While kids absolutely love AlbertFamily Orthodontics, it’s perfect foradults too. Casey Odell writes, “Teethcame out PERFECT! Love the results!I was a little nervous when I first madean appointment, seeing as how I am alittle bit older, but I couldn’t be hap-pier! The office is nice, clean, andmodern. Staff and Dr Albert weresuper friendly, helpful, and ready toanswer any questions and work withyou. I will be recommending anyoneand everyone that needs a perfectsmile to come here!”

Dr. Albert grew up locally andtruly has become a leader in thecommunity, where he now lives withhis family. An alumnus of local EastLake High School, Dr. Albert nowbrings his services to the Pasco andPinellas communities as a specialist inOrthodontics and Dentofacial Or-thopedics. A graduate (with honors)of The University of Florida’s Col-lege of Dentistry, he also completed

his Orthodontic Residency, receivedhis Orthodontics Certificate, andearned his Master’s of Science De-gree from UF.

This year, Dr. Albert was privi-leged to take part in two importantoutreach projects that provided freedental care to Floridians and abroadin Haiti.

Mission Possible!Locally, Dr. Albert joined other

dental professionals to provide freedental care to 1,660 people at the firstFlorida Mission of Mercy (FLAMOM)event, which was held at the FloridaState Fairgrounds on March 28-29 ofthis year. Dr. Albert says, “With thehelp of over 1,400 volunteers, we pro-vided 8,000 dental procedures equal-ing approximately $1.1 million dollars’worth of free care.”

When Pastor Douglas Poole ofCypress Meadows Communitystarted planning a mission trip toHaiti, Dr. Albert stepped up to vol-unteer along with other members ofhis church, not really knowing whatto expect. They went to an outskirtcommunity on the northwesterncoast of Haiti where people haven’treceived much outside help due tothe remote location. Dr. Albert ex-plains, “It was a leap of faith. There

was no setup other than a chair, in-struments and anesthetic, but wewere still able to help a lot of people.I pulled 39 teeth; extractions are agreat way to help people in those cir-cumstances because it eliminates thepain and prevents infection.” Dr. Al-bert is thankful to the many localdentists who donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. “We had threelarge suitcases full of donated sup-plies from our generous local den-tists. It is sad to say, but for a lot ofthe children there, they did not havetheir own toothbrush or any way to

clean their teeth. They were clutch-ing those toothbrushes like the bestgift you could imagine!”

Dr. Albert is humble about thegreat success of Albert Family Ortho-dontics and is very appreciative of hispatients and the community’s trust inhim. So, he does his best to give back– both to his patients and the com-munity. Brilliantly, he blends con-tests with community outreach, suchas the recent Pet Palooza contest.“Our patients posted pictures ofthemselves with their pets and had achance to win gift cards to PetSmart,

and for every picture posted, we do-nated $3 to the Humane Society. Itwas another way to get people en-gaged and a neat and fun way to giveback to the community.”

Once again this year, AlbertFamily Orthodontics held its “Mak-ing a Change” contest for localschools and was able to give $1,000to Dayspring Academy, $250 toSeven Springs Middle School, and$250 to River Ridge Middle School.“I went to each school and met withthe principals to give them the checkpersonally,” shares Dr. Albert. “Theyhad immediate needs and I was so

happy that wewere able tohelp.” To decidethe winners ofthe “Making aChange” con-test, Albert Fam-ily Orthodonticslists all of theschools in thearea that theirpatients go to onits facebookpage, and peoplevote for their fa-vorite school. The top threeschools with the

most likes are then entered into arandom drawing for the top prize.

Some of Dr. Albert’s contests arejust to give back to his patients, like arecent contest that utilized the popu-lar website Pinterest. “Re-Pin toWin” was super easy; all that was re-quired to be in the running to win anXbox One was to re-pin a graphicdesign provided by the Albert FamilyOrthodontics.

The “Summer of Music andSmiles” contest, though, is a definitefavorite of patients of all ages. Thisyear’s concerts to win include fourtickets to Luke Bryan’s September 6

concert and four tickets to One Di-rection on October 3. The “Sum-mer of Music and Smiles” contestruns from July through August, andto enter, Albert Family Orthodon-tics’ patients just post a picture ofthemselves on facebook and havetheir friends vote for them to win.

Community is important to Dr.Albert, who is a member and PaulHarris Fellow of the Rotary Club ofTrinity. Every year, Albert Family Or-thodontics hosts a “Candy Buy Back”after Halloween, where sweets aredonated to troops stationed overseas.Albert Family Orthodontics also par-ticipates in Toys for Tots through theSalvation Army every holiday season.
