Lwanda Madikizela, speaking on behalf of the protesters, said they want to make sure Ohlanga Cash and Carry are losing reve- nue as they are only concerned about millions of rands, not about people who don’t have land. The demonstrators have de- manded that until President Jacob Zuma comes to address them they will not leave the gates of Ohlanga Cash and Carry. Among the placards that were waved by the angry protesters was one that read: “No land to build shelter, no vote. We want our land back, who sold our land, one bullet and one land grabber.” Another read: “If you buy a sto- len item you then become a crimi- nal,” “The 1913 Land Act brutally dispossessed the original owners of the land to the hands of the colonial rule” said Dumusani Dlamini from civil organisation, Landless People’s Movement. He said the land reform programmes under the current government did not make anything better for the oppressed; instead it insulted the poor. The willing buyer and willing seller mantra is not a viable op- tion for the poor because they don’t have power to buy. Dlamini told Fever that apartheid govern- ment tactics are still being used by the current government. “You have pushed us to the edge and this is the point where we draw the line, so we are taking our land back. No Indian or Pakistani will come and flex their financial strength and buy us out of our land while the government is spending R1.2 million on con- structing the cattle kraal for Presi- dent Zuma at Nkandla while our people are homeless,” said Dlamini. As a result, the community have formed the civil organisa- tion called Landless People’s Movement (LPM) where they have planned to take land by force and occupy all vacant and unused land in and around Kokstad for human settlement, he said. “ I don’t have a place and they (the government) promised me for the past 20 years that I was going to get my own RDP house, but up to now there is nothing. “Since 1992, I have tried to get my own place and as a result I have been staying with my sister,” said one of the protesters, Mike Nongo- go. The administration of justice is a veryimportant pillar of government so therecent convictions in the Kokstadcourts must be applauded by commu-nity members. The convictions come atan excellent time as most Kokstad resi-dents have been living in fear as therehas been many car break-ins, house-breakings and hijacking incidents. Theharsh sentence handed down to serialhouse breakers will serve as a warningtoallthosewhobreakthelawthattheywill not get away with their criminalways. Even though there is still a lotthat needs to be done to combat crime,it is without a doubt that the recentconvictions come as a relief to commu-nity members.

St Monica’snewsTeam-building

FRIDAY, 21 February, broughtwith it a great sense of anticipa-tionfromthestaffastheyawaitedthe beginning of their team-build-ing challenges. The morning start-ed with a meet-and-greet sessionwhere everyone was introduced tothe instructors from Beach andBush Adventure Expeditioners.

Then it was onto the first questof the day – Indiana Jones Chal-lenge. The staff were divided intotheir phase groups and the chal-lenge began with each team hav-ing to come up with an interestingwar cry. The aim of the challengewas to collect as many artifacts aspossible as the team movedthrough the various activities. Theteam with the most artifactswould then be the winners. Thisspurred on the competitive spiritamong all team members andeveryone was raring to go.

The challenges includedspear-throwing, spider-web andtower-building, saw two teamsbeing pitted against each other todetermine the victor. Great pealsof laughter and frantic lifting, pull-ing and pushing followed, witheach team convinced that theywould certainly win.

Then it was to the hall for moreintellectual challenges. However, the battle came down to twoteams — the preschool and theFET Phase. It was the preschoolwhich walked away victoriouswith their outstanding hand-eyeco-ordination.

After lunch brought with it adifferent kind of challenge. The

staff donned their detective hatsto solve a triple murder in a CSIChallenge. Amid intriguing discus-sions about motives, opportunityand cause, the teams movedaround to different “crime scenes”collecting vital evidence thatwould help them crack the case.

It was FET whose excellent de-tective reasoning skills helpedthem come the closest to solvingthe case and they were crownedthe overall victors.

Team-building activities

brought with them a renewedsense of team belonging and to-getherness and an increased re-spect for one another. It providedan opportunity for everyone to re-alise and understand the impor-tanceofeffectivecommunication.

We thank the instructors fromBeach and Bush Adventures forthe wonderful, fun-filled chal-lenges. A special thank you to allthe staff who participated whole-heartedly and made the day a re-sounding success. — Ms A. Hulleyand Mrs P. Myburg.

GM Sineke - Municipal Manager

WARM greetings once again to the com-munity of Kwa Sani. It is with pleasure thatwe give you the news and updates aboutthe activities, programmes as well asprojects of your municipality.

Local tourism forumKwa Sani Municipality recently held its

quarterly local tourism forum attended bytourism stakeholders ranging from theSouthern Drakensberg Community Tour-ism Organisation, Sisonke DevelopmentAgency,HimevilleMuseum,SAPSandlocalevent organisers for example , the SplashyFen festival and the Sani Stagger.

The purpose of the forum is to bring to-gether tourism stakeholders to discusstourism issues and come up with solutionson strategies that can be used to boost lo-cal tourism.

Issues discussed:• The alignment of all local events.

• Formation of local event organisingcommittee, inclusive of tourism-relatedstakeholders.

• Branding and promotion of all KwaSani events.

The Kwa Sani Municipality mayor em-phasised the importance of event align-ments and collective planning as well aspartnerships when organising or staginglocal events.

Pedro Carlo, Splashy Fen organiser, asked the Kwa Sani community to takeownership of the festival and urged thebusiness sector to take advantage of the

festival potential spin-offs. Tourism am-bassadors within the municipality willhave the opportunity to gain exposure inthe tourism industry by being part of thisprestigious event. We encourage tourismbusinesses to align their business advertis-ing with the event-marketing strategy.

Another important resolution of themeeting was that the Kwa Sani Municipali-ty Tourism office, together with the South-ern Drakensberg Community Tourism Or-ganisation for the first time will have atourism kiosk at the festival to provide aplatform for local tourism businesses to

market their businesses. The Kwa Sani Municipality held a fire

awareness campaign at Underberg Schoolon 25 February, which targeted all schoolswithin the boundaries of the municipalityand was done in partnership with RuralMetro.

The Kwa Sani Municipality thus pro-motes the spirit of inter-governmental re-lations and encourages stakeholders with-in Kwa Sani to participate in any activityor public service that takes place within theboundaries of the municipality.

Until next time, stay blessed.
