1.WHAT IS AN ‘EARTHSHIP’?
• House made up of rammed earth tyres and bottles
• Type of passive solar house made of recycled materials

2.HISTORY
• Thumb house –the first earthship building• Micheal Reynolds – founder of Earth
Biotechture.• Design later incorporated in Earthship• Earthship biotecture- company specialising
in designing and building Earthship.

3. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
• PRIMARY BUILDING BLOCKS USED ARE
– Rammed – earth encased in steel belted tyres
– Aluminium cans or glass/plastic bottles
9
Rammed earth encased in steel belted tyres
•Automobile tyres
•Filled with compacted earth
•Encased in steel belt
Aluminium cans or glass/ plastic bottles
•Very strong
•Easy to build
•Create beautiful colour wall
•Light shines through the walls
12
4.NATURE OF MATERIALS USED
• Indigenous• Thermal mass• Durability• Resilient• Low specific skill requirements
13
5. SYSTEMS
• Water• Electricity• Climate
14
Water
• Water collection process
• The grey water collection and reuse system
• The black water treatment system
15
• Greywater is gently used water from your bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, and washing machines. (filter plants)
• Blackwater is used to describe waste ware containing feces, urine and flushwater from flush toilets (solar enhanced septic tank or incubater)
16
• Water organising module
• Consists of filters and DC-pump
• Create common household water pressure
• Used for all household activities except flushing
toilets
17
Electricity
• Photo Voltaic solar system
• Collect store and use
• Majority of electricity harvested from sun and wind
• Wind turbines- DC energy
• Power Organising Module- used to store energy from batteries and inverted it for AC use
18
Power organizing module (POM)
19
Climate
• Advantage of the properties of thermal mass and passive solar heating and cooling
• Large front windows with integrated shades
• Walls soak up heat during day and radiate heat during night
• Natural ventilation

VEDIO (WITH PLASTIC BOTTLE, SAME AS THAT FOR
TYRES ALSO)

7.KARUNA: THE EARTHSHIP IN INDIA
• Earthship in India
• Prakasapuram Village, Kodaikanal, Tamilnadu
• 100% self sufficient
• No extra heating or cooling system
• Luxury home

8.MERITS OF EARTHSHIP
• Energy efficient• Self sustainability• Build ability• Easily available building materials• Cost effective• Time consuming• Earthquake resistent
29
9.DEMERITS OF EARTHSHIP
• Resell ability• Building permits• Financing
