    About Plat Tectonics

Plate tectonics tells us that the earths rigidouter shell is broken into a mosaic of oceanicand continental plates which can slide overthe plastics nesthemosphere, which is theupper most layer of the mantle.

The plates are in constant motion where theyinteract, along their margins, important

geological process take place, such asmountain belts, earthquake and volcanoes.

    Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden shift in thetectonic plates in the earth crust. This ismanifested by the moving and shaking of the

ground, and can be massively damaging topoorly built structures.

The most powerful earthquake can destroyeven the best built structures. In addition, they can trigger a second disaster such astsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

Earthquakes occur along fault lines and are

unpredictable. They are capable of killingthousands of people, such as in 1976 Tangshanand 2004 Indian Ocean incidents.

There are 3 main plate tectonics :

extended, transformed and compressed . Plateboundaries in different localities are subject to

    different inter plate stresses, producingearhquakes.

    Richter Scale

Earthquake can measured by usingseismograph. Earthquake strength canseparate into 9 types that refers to richter

    scale.

    Earthquake Strength Effects

Lower than 3.5 Generally not felt, but

recorded.3.5-5.4 Often felt, but rarely causes

    damage.

    Lower than 6.0

At most slight damage to well

designed buildings. Can causemajor damage to poorlyconstructed buildings over smallregions

    6.1-6.9

Can be destructive in areas up toabout 100 km across where peoplelive.

    7.0-7.9

Major earthquake can causeserious damage over larger areas.

8.0 or greater Great earthquake can causeserious damage in areas severalhundred kilometres across.

    SEISMOGRAPH

Sensitive seismograph are the principal toolof scientist who study earthquakes.1000 ofseismograph stations are in the operationthroughout the world.

Seismograph is a simple pendulum. When theground shakes, the base and frame of theinstrument move with it. But, keep thependulum bob in place. It will then appear tomove, relative to the shaking ground.

As it moves it records the pendulumdiplacements as they change with tine, tracing

    out a record called seismograph.
