EARTHQUAKE DATABy: Nate Wikol

Page 2: Earthquake data

What do you notice about the distribution of these earthquakes? I notice that the most of the earthquakes occur along the plate boundaries.

Page 3: Earthquake data

How does the distribution of these earthquakes compare to the others? In the other one the earthquakes were along all of the plate boundaries. In this one the earthquakes were along some of the plate boundaries and there are no earthquakes inland.

Page 4: Earthquake data

What type of plate boundary is associated with earthquakes that have a magnitude of 7.0 or greater?

The Big earthquakes occur a lot at the convergent plate Boundaries.

Page 5: Earthquake data

What percentage of big earthquakes occur within 100 miles of a convergent plate boundary?

47% (588 earthquakes) occur within 100 miles of a convergent plate boundary.

Page 6: Earthquake data

What percentage of big earthquakes occur within 200 miles of a convergent plate boundary?71% (886 earthquakes) occur within 200 miles of a convergent plate boundary.

Create a top 10 list of places on earth you predict will have a significant earthquake.

1.India

2.China

3.Egypt

4.Chile

5.Mexico

6.Japan

7.Alaska

8.California

9.Middle of Atlantic Ocean

10.Pacific Ocean

Page 8: Earthquake data

Which places are "overdue" for an earthquake?

Russia and Australia because both of them are near where a lot of earthquakes occur. Both of them don’t have a lot of seismic activity and are near plate boundaries.

Page 9: Earthquake data

What new tools or techniques are seismologists using to help them better predict earthquakes?

Interferometric-Synthetic Aperture Radar

62% chance of a major quake hitting the same place within the next 30 years

Using IR cameras to detect the heat created for the two plates from space

identify one place from your Top Ten Hit List that you predict will be the most likely place on Earth to experience the Next Big One!

China because it is right in the middle of a lot of earthquakes including some in and nearby its country within 30 years.

Page 11: Earthquake data

What have you learned about earthquakes and earthquake prediction?

I have learned that there are many different methods for finding when earthquakes will strike. I have also learned that most earthquakes are unpredictable and you don’t see them coming.

Page 12: Earthquake data

What factors influence earthquake prediction?

Factors that influence earthquake predictions are where and when they happen. Another factor is where earthquakes occur a lot and where they don’t.

Page 13: Earthquake data

Where on Earth do most of the really big earthquakes strike?

Most of the really big earthquakes strike around Asia and Africa.
