President’s foreword

When I took up the post as president of Earthlink NTU, I also took up the responsibility of steering Earthlink NTU towards its goals of spreading environmental awareness to the campus population and outside of NTU. To continue to bring such a serious topic, such as environmental awareness, to the mass public, we did it through engaging and fun campaigns.

It has been an exciting year for Earthlink with the launch of several projects such as Bring Your Own Bag Day campaign, GreeNTU, Earth Hour in NTU, RE-live 2009 and many more. It is also a milestone for Recycling in NTU as more bins are introduced to all the halls and even academic areas.

All these have not been that successful without the efforts of our Earthlink members, subcommers and maincommers along with those organizations that are our constant supporters such as Nokia, Tes Amm, Student Affairs Office, Office of Facilities Planning & Management and Lien Institute for the Environment (LIFE).

05

President’s foreword

We have also embarked in more fun and education this year with more gatherings and outdoor trips to provide our members with a fun learning experience. One of the more memorable ones was the EAC talks by various environmental organizations and the nature guiding trips to Pulau Semakau and the Marina Barrage. We are seeing more participations from our members and non-members in all our events, and it is certainly a huge encouragement to all of us.

One of the different approach that was done this year was during Ecoventure, which for the first time, we collaborated with Chong Qing Foreign Language School and Chong Qing University to do an exhibition along with sharing sessions with the students. This was in a bid to exchange ideas of environmental movements between our different geo-political locations, as well as sowing the seeds of environmental awareness overseas.

In the coming years, Earthlink will continue to strive forward to increase the environmental awareness level in NTU. To everyone out there, every step counts even if it is small because if I change the world changes. Let us love this Earth more!

Nature Appreciation at HSBC Treetop Walk2 9 t h N o v e m b e r 2 0 0 8

Earthlink NTU organized its first outdoor trip for the academic year on the 29th November 2008 (Saturday). The event took place along MacRitchie Reservoir. The main purpose of this outdoor trip is to let our members observe the evolution of plant and animal life throughout the ages within the evolution garden in addition to knowing more about Singapore’s forest.

We were split into two groups and each is led by the two nature guides. Throughout the guided walk, the guides shared many interesting fun facts regarding the trees and plants in Singapore. They even related the facts to our everyday life. We also took pictures along the way to mark our visit to the reservoir. The most interesting part of the walk was the steel bridge section, where the view observed was truly magnificent.

introducTionAbout Earth l ink NTU|

Earthlink NTU has been the only environmental club in Nanyang Technological University since its inception in 1992.

Over the years, Earthlink NTU has been

actively promoting environmentalism,

both on campus and beyond. Our motto,

“If I change, the world changes”, highlights

the fact that every individual can make a

difference, and it is the collective effort

of many individuals that can change the

world.

Earthlink has been the main student body spearheading

the movement to make NTU a truly green campus. Numerous

activities, events, and campaigns are held annually, reaching

out to a large section of the campus population and the

general public. The youth of today will be the change makers

of tomorrow, who are responsible for upholding the notion of

environmentalism and sustainability in the 21st century.

Trip to Pulau Semakau2 8 t h F e b r u a r y 2 0 0 9

Upon arrival of Pulau Semakau, we were warmly greeted by Mr Edward Lim, which was the person-in-charge of trips to Pulau Semakau. We watched a video, covering the aspects of waste management and reiterated the importance of incorporating the 3”R”s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle into our lives. The talk by Mr. Lim was enriching, highlighting the key aspects of Pulau Semakau and the contributions that can be made by the general public to sustain Singapore’s only landfill.

After the engaging talk and video session, we had a tour by air-con bus around Pulau Semakau and Pulau Seking, the two original islands upon which the landfill was built on. Carmen, who was the guide for our tour bus, gave us an informative introduction of the attractions of Pulau Semakau. We toured the rainforest trail and visited the coastal shoreline during low tide.

Nature Walk - Discover NTU’s Little Known Secrets7 t h M a r c h 2 0 0 9

The Earthlink nature walk returned with our nature guides who worked hard to research on the plants encountered on the new route planned for the walk, which was no longer confined to the boundaries of Yunnan Garden.

The participants were introduced to the rich flora of our campus garden and also parts of their history about how the staff and students of the former Nanyang University came together to plant several of the trees that can still be found now.

Hands on with nature photography.

As this walk brought the participants to various little visited places of our campus, they were exposed to a much richer variety of plants, birds and insects rarely encountered during an everyday walk around campus.

Towards the end of the walk, participants were treated with a little picnic to tame their growling stomach. We were glad that we have introduced to them NTU’s little known secrets and beauty, and a beautiful tour of NTU.

Be Green Keep Clean Campaign4 t h - 1 3 t h A u g u s t 2 0 0 8

Be Green Keep Clean Campaign was initiated by the Office of Facilities Planning & Management (OFPM) and was student-driven by Earthlink NTU with the support from Food Connection Broadway Foodcourt management.

The main objective of this campaign was to encourage consumers in Food Connection Broadway foodcourt to return their used dishwares and trays after eating. It was deemed to be a green movement as the self-consciousness would help to reduce resources on cleaning work and improve on general cleanliness of the foodcourt.

Apart from prominent posters in the foodcourt and stickers pasted on all the tables, we also stationed our members during the specific lunch/dinner peak hours to engage people and to remind them to return their crockery after eating.

Nature Appreciation Night2 4 t h O c t o b e r 2 0 0 8

The Nature Appreciation night, jointly organized by Earthlink NTU and the Astronomical Society of NTU, was made up of two activites - a nature walk followed by stargazing. Participants were first introduced to the rich and diverse range of vegetation in the Yunnan Garden, as well as to the history of Earthlink’s self-organized nature guides.

After that, the participants were led to the ADM where a short game quiz was carried out to test how much the participants had learnt from their guided walks. The participants were all rewarded with snacks for answering correctly. Participants were given a rare opportunity to look at Jupiter up close through the telescope. They were also introduced to the mystery of the universe through an informative sharing session.

The foodcourt is extremely packed daily during lunch hours from 11.30am to 1.30pm and also during dinner hours from 6pm to 7.30pm. The large volume of human traffic during the peak periods made cleaning very tedious for the limited number of cleaners and janitors.

Fortunately, after a week, we were able to make a difference in changing the social habits of most people. Many customers of the food court returned their crockery after finishing their meals. We also received positive feedback from both students as well as staff from Broadway Management.

We hope to encourage not only the graceful habit of returning one’s own used dishwares and trays to the tray return counters, but also to make a positive impact on the environment but reducing resources used to collect used dishwares and trays.

International Coastal Cleanup Singapore2 0 t h S e p t e m b e r 2 0 0 8

It all started 23 years ago – in 1986, a woman walking alone the beach of South Padre Island, Texas, was appalled at the amount of trash she saw on the shoreline. She organized a beach cleanup. With the help of 2,800 Texans and within the period of two hours, they collected 124 tons of coastal trash.

Soon, a worldwide movement blossomed out of the effort of that 2,800 helpful Texans, into a single event involving more than six million volunteers in 127 countries across the world and all 55 U.S. states and territories over the last 23 years. The International Coastal Cleanup flagship event is held on the third of Saturday in September every year, providing a direct and tangible way for like-minded individuals to make a difference for one of the largest problem we face – marine pollution.

Coastal C leanupSingapore 2008 |

In Singapore, the International Coastal Cleanup movement has been coordinated by the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research at the National University of Singapore since 2001. Earthlink NTU participated as a voluntary group of university students to help the battle against marine trash in Kallang Basin. Soon to be converted to a freshwater reservoir, the basin will be renamed as Marina Reservoir and will be the largest reservoir, by sheer volume and catchment area, in Singapore.

We were frequently surprised by the waste we stumbled upon – ranging from the usual cigarette butts and plastic waste, with the latter making up the bulk of the total amount of garbage collected, to the unusual ones like empty shells of horse shoe crabs, items of worship and an abandoned plastic toy. The diversity of the types of garbage can be attributed to the huge catchment area of Kallang Basin, which spans approximately one-sixth of Singapore’s land area.

A group photo along Kallang River after the cleanup. It was tiring but fun!

For the International Coastal Cleanup Singapore 2008, we have managed to collect 93.5 kilograms of trash and a total of 4,333 items. A rough breakdown of the garbage composition shows that plastic waste is the major marine pollutant in Singapore, which was about 40% of the total number of items collected.

We are proud ot be part of the global movement of an annual waterfront and seaside cleanup - not only we get to contribute our effort in making Marina Bay a cleaner place, but also get the volunteers to understand the importance of a clean, new Marina Reservoir.

NTU Recycling Drive1 7 t h - 3 0 t h N o v e m b e r 2 0 0 8

A month before the launch of the recycling drive, volunteers conducted a recycling survey in the halls of residence in October. We discovered that many lacked awareness in environmental issues, especially in recycling. Residents were also unclear of the locations of recycling bins in NTU, with a small fraction of them not knowing they existed.

With the results of the survey in mind, Earthlink NTU organized a Recycling Drive for halls, clubs and societies from 17th to 30th November 2008. This period coincided with the end of the examination when students discard their examination papers and notes. The end of examinations marked the start of the vacation where residents check out from their rooms and clubs clear up their accumulated waste. Each participating hall was provided with a 4-wheeled recycling bin during the drive period to collect the high volume of recyclable waste.

Proper use of recycling bins iseveryone’s responsibility.

Ten recycling bins were delivered to NTU by 800 Super Waste Management. “Dos and Don’ts for Recycling” posters were pasted on the bins , listing items that are recyclable and those that are not. Publicity posters were put up at the notice boards in all the halls of residence and in the North and South Spines. The recycling committee checked the bins regularly to make sure they did not overflow.

By creating an opportunity for students to involve themselves in recycling through the NTU Recycling Drive, we hope to educate them about proper usage of the bins. With the support of the NTU administration and Hall offices, we strive to encourage the adoption of environmentally-friendly habits.

‘greeNTU’ - Environmental Awareness Campaign 20092 9 t h - 3 0 t h J a n u a r y 2 0 0 9

The Environmental Awareness Campaign (EAC) 2009, greeNTU (Green to You), is a campaign that aims to encourage students and staff alike to adopt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle in NTU and beyond.

This campaign aims to educate students and staff on an environmentally-sustainable lifestyle through events and by introducing small changes in their lifestyles to make a difference. The slogan “It’s our responsibility” highlights the importance of helping the environment from a bottom-up, personal approach, coupled with the top-down government efforts to promote a ‘green’ lifestyle.

The two-day long event by Earthlink NTU involved sharing with the university population on why their actions and insignificant, minute changes to their lifestyles really matter, as well as informing them of the available avenues to take action in terms of better utilization of resources, greener consumption habits and etc.

We set up public education booth and a miniature photo gallery. Visitors were greeted with pamphlets, exhibition panels, message boards and photos from Ecoventure. The photo gallery featured magnificent photos of the environment in China, a country where Earthlink members will be travelling to for the Ecoventure in during the 2009 summer break, to embark on a journey of discovery, learning and appreciation.

Other concurrent ongoing activites at Canteen A during the event included several rounds of snakes and ladders game and the palm messages booth. The former incorporates the basic idea of environmental awareness and consciousness into gameplay while the latter allows passerbys, students and staffs alike to pledge their support for a greener lifestyle by leaving a colourful palm print on canvases. Over the course of two days, we have managed to collect more than 200 palm prints, each complete with a signature and a short message left by the person who’ve printed the palm.

On the other hand, over at Canteen B, we were proud to invite external corporations to set up booths to promote and sell their environmentally-friendly products – participating vendors include Furnstyles, Olive Green Marketing and etc.

The main aim of the public education going on in canteen B, conducted by volunteers from Earthlink, is to raise awareness on recycling – the positions of the recycling bins in the campus, the general guidelines, reasons and significance for recycling, complete with a list of commonly seen recyclables. The volunteers also recruited passerbys for quizzes and puzzles, and gave out free gifts for participation.

In addition, the ‘Green through Lens’ photography competition was rather well-received with more than sixty entries of photos that depict the effort of making a greener tomorrow. The O’Bon reusable bag competition also received artworks from students who’ve made creative designs on reusable bags.

The changes we strived to make is not merely limited to the two-day event - we have also launched the Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) @ NTU event, which aims to educate shoppers on the importance of reducing plastic bag consumption and the significance of this habit. Participating outlets include Nanyang Supermarket at Hall 12 and at the Students Activities Centres (SAC), Popular Bookstore, 7-Eleven, The Sun, Eight Flags, NIE Campus Bookstore and the sundry shop at Hall 14.

Not only does greeNTU aim to encourage a greener lifestyle, it also symbolizes the hope and enthusiasm many people have in changing the environment through small changes in their lifestyle.

RE-live 2009: Rethinking the way you live5 t h - 7 t h J u n e 2 0 0 9

The project “RE-live 2009: Rethinking the way you live” was held on World Environment Day on 5th June 2009. “RE-Live! 2009” saw together over 20,000 members of the public over the span of three days. The event also brought together about 300 youth from different universities, polytechnics and junior colleges to conceptualize and execute the full project.

We aim to make “RE-Live!” as a trademark event on every World Environment Day in Singapore as the Youth & Environment Day. We hope to promote sustainable living lifestyle in an interactive and engaging manner, to educate public through involvement of youths in Singapore on environment-related issues and to cultivate a group of passionate youths concerned with the environmental issues the world faces today.

25

signaTure eventsRE-l ive2009 |

The event was kicked off with a breathtaking drum performance by students from Singapore Polytechnic. Then, volunteers proceeded to play the “LIVE GREEN” Synchronized Action game, where they will have to follow the instructions given by the emcee and perform a series of actions, using six items that represented the theme of sustainable living.

An ongoing programme which we started on the first day of the event was the ECO Exhibition and Trail. The exhibition focused on six themes: water, waste, biodiversity, shelter, food and energy. The ECO Exhibition adopted a more interactive approach. Mini-activities and fun games were also held during the three-day course of the exhibition.

Over 200 youth volunteers were trained to engage the public meaningfully to share with them on how they can each adopt a lifestyle that would make a difference - not only to the environment, but how it would also benefit they themselves.

In addition, the objective of ECO Trail was to improve the understanding of Singaporeans of Volunteer Welfare Organizations (VWOs) currently engaged in conservation efforts. We invited the Vegetarian Society and Tzu Chi Foundation to set up booths in front of the MRT station, where the pedestrian traffic is the greatest. VWOs set up information booths that showcased their activities and provided opportunities for volunteers to sign up.

27

signaTure eventsRE-l ive2009 |

Besides the ECO Exhibition and Trail, we also put up a huge, blank canvas at the event venue and invited volunteers and members of the public alike to leave their palm prints and signatures.

The aim of the Palm Messages activity is not only to make others aware of our cause, but also to help people pledge to change personal habits for a better environment.

At the end of the three-day environmental awareness event, we organized an aerial photography event at the Padang. The lush green backdrop makes it a perfect venue for the purpose. Through this event, we aim to engage the public to make an important green message in an intersting manner.

The Green Walk would capitalize on mass participation to get the message on environmental conservation across. It served to attract the public’s attention, and at the same time deliver the message regarding the importance of a sustainable living lifestyle. The objective of Green Walk was to promote the living of a sustainable lifestyle to stay healthy by walking. The Green Walk began at Padang and ended at the Re-Live! Festival held at Bugis Junction, where the participants could take part in other activities that were ongoing.

29

Ecoventure 20091 2 n d - 2 8 t h J u n e 2 0 0 9

The annual summer vacation marks the start of a highly anticipated event, Ecoventure, organized by Earthlink NTU. We aim to bring participants closer to the embrace of Mother Nature - the motion behind Ecoventure echoes the idea of ‘bringing upon changes from oneself’ behind Earthlink’s motto.

By increasing environmental awareness and youth participation in environmentally-related events from a bottom-up approach, we believe when coupled with Singapore government’s top-down approach in public education and subsidiary funds for green projects, a change for a greener campus population will eventually be achieved.

From Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia to the Australian Christmas Island, Earthlink’s Ecoventure trips have a long history of bringing its members to explore and appreciate the world beyond the borders of Singapore. With the collaboration of LIEN Institute of the Environment (LIFE), we brought participants to the heart of the Land of Dragons, China.

Preparation of the trip was not an easy task - we sent out posters calling for interested individuals, and were pleased to receive a warm response from the campus population. Selected participants underwent a series of training sessions for them to improve their teaching and presentation skills, as well as to break the ice among participants to ensure better communication.

On the morning of 12th June, we gathered at Changi Airport, overflowing with excitement. After a long flight from Singapore, we arrived in Chengdu and were immediately whisked off for a five-hour bus ride down to Chongqing City.

The first week of Ecoventure was dedicated to engaging participants to teach, learn and participate in various interactive activities with the local students from Chongqing Foreign Language School, Chongqing Jiaoting University Green Union and Chongqing University.

Upon arrival, we immediately started work on the final preparations of exhibition materials as well as their presentation, right into the wee hours in the morning.

institutions that we visited.

The experience of being able to be at a position to teach and interact during the teaching sessions was extremely rewarding. We were overwhelmed by the unrivalled passion and inquisitiveness of the local students.

By incorporating new environmental ideas into our English classes, we managed to not only fulfill our task to improve their grasp on the language, but also to reach out to students regarding the causes and dire consequences of global warming.

An eco-camp followed each teaching session in the foreign language school we visited. The students and the facilitators enjoyed themselves indulging in games, going through the thick and thin throughout the entire camp. Singing and dancing together not only lifted our spirits, but also bonded us as a whole. Students were all teeming with excitement and brimming with smiles after the two-day camp concluded.

A four-day “GreenTech Exhibition” was aslo held in both Chongqing Foreign Language School and Chongqing University. The exhibition introduces visitors to the diverse types of new, emerging technologies in Singapore and across the globe. The biggest challenge we faced was translating the English-written materials on the exhibition panels to visitors to let them have a better understanding of their contents.

An eco-forum was held on the last day of our visit to Chongqing University. Participants from both universities participated actively in the sharing session, followed by friendly matches of Captain’s ball and other games.

Following the week of hard work, we rewarded ourselves with a one-week-long tour of the picturesque countryside of Sichuan province. Led by our enthusiastic female Sino-Tibetan tour guide, “Lamu”, literally meaning “beautiful” in Tibetan language, we sang, played and enjoyed the breathtaking views throughout the tour.

The scenery in rural China completely took our breath away - from the rolling hills to the pebble-filled rivers, from the grasslands to the cerulean sky. Every breath we took filled our lungs with the clean, crisp air of the highlands.

We were introduced to sites across the Sichuan province that were rich in historical value and natural beauty, from the Luding Chain Bridge to the beautiful, rolling hills of Daoccheng. It was an eye-opening experience for all of us – appreciating the vastness of nature and how insignificant, minute humanity is compared to Mother Nature herself.

Our road trip through the rural parts of China was not without a few perilous and heart-stopping moments – thank goodness our skilled bus driver managed to maneuver through the treacherous mountains and tight hairpin turns. The experience of seeing our bus roaring inches away from the steep cliff is nowhere near a roller coaster ride in the city.

Visiting the famous Luding Chain Bridge. The rolling, surging waters underneath the bridge didn’t stop us from grabbing every single possible photo opportunities!

Two weeks were definitely inadequate to experience the beauty of China’s vast wilderness. There were many heart-warming moments throughout our journey that were deeply etched in our memories since then. There was also a moment when environmental consciousness got the better of us, resulting in an impromptu cleanup of a litter-filled riverbank of a river in Yading town.

New friendships were forged, golden advices were cast in stone. Through Ecoventure 2009, we have claimed a piece of Shangri-La in our hearts that will never vanish - the experience we had, the fun we’d been through, the tears we’d shed, we will keep them close to our heart.
