Local ecology educator Georgetown350 will join booths with Georgetown Utility Systems and Southwestern University in a combined display in the Safe Place Kids Village. The hands-on, interactive exhibits will focus primarily on renewable energy and self-generated electricity. Georgetown350 spokesperson Ross Hunter said the displays are not just for kids but are geared to be fun for all ages to enjoy. "There will be prizes, and surprises," he said. Among the elements promised so far for the displays are a sneak preview of Georgetown's forthcoming Smart Grid, which allows homes to optimize consumption and also co-generate and sell power back to the city. Wind power is featured, along with pedal-powered and solar electricity. Georgetown350 will also conduct what Hunter calls a "strictly non-scientific" survey, inviting participants to join a video collage of local opinion regarding a sustainable future. "We can show the world how we feel about going green," he said. The Red Poppy Festival is held on the Georgetown Square on Saturday and Sunday, April 16th & 17th. Georgetown Utility Systems participation is led by its Conservation and Environmental Services department, and Southwestern University is represented by Students for Environmental Activism and Knowledge. Georgetown350 is a local non-profit focused on ecological education and sustainable practices, and was responsible for the city's first Sustainability Expo last year.
