initiatives The special attraction will be the Monster Cup. There will be free hot coffees or tea for folks who bring their own coffee cup. The Monster Cup will be spreading the word about the resources one can save when one uses a reusable cup and will also be encouraging the recycling of paper and plastic coffee cups in the hospital’s ‘All in one recycling’.

City-Wide Event

Participating in a city-wide Green Commute Day on Earth Day. Participants who arrive to work ‘green’ will be entered into a raffle for a ‘green’ prize (likely a $25 gift certificate to a bike shop). Our hospital will be also be competing with other businesses/organizations in the community for prizes to be awarded for highest participation, most miles saved, etc.

We'll have information about water quality. Collection of bottles for a week (the week before) and put in a cage outside of our cafeteria by the pond and garden. Then people can see how many, and also guess how many for a prize. 3. Healing Environment - We'll have information about what it is, and ask people to make suggestions (and another prize) 4. Green Roof Pilot! Installation of small piece of living roof in very visible location.

April 22 - Ride Your Bike to Work Day: Those who ride their bike into work on Earth Day will receive a 10% discount on a meal that day in the BMC Cafeteria. Helmet must be present for discount. BMC Farmer's Market Vendors (Riverstreet Flowerland & Twin Maple Orchards) will be providing strawberry plants for purchase and various seedlings during the lunch hour on Earth Day. The seedlings will be free for those that purchase a meal in the cafeteria while supplies last. The Cafeteria will be offering a wider selection of cups that can be used for the Reusable Cup Program on Earth Day. Those purchasing a reusable cup on Earth Day will receive a free fountain drink or coffee and can save 10 cents on refills thereafter with use of the cup. Vegetarian Specials in the BMC Cafe on Earth Day Green Team Booth: Information on the BMC Green Team & Green Tips will be available.

highlight bike-to-work advocacy April 20—Hospital Staff will participate in a Sustainability Showcase panel discussion at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC), an event that highlights local businesses honored with the Chamber of Commerce Green Award. April 22—The hospital will have an educational booth on sustainability in the UWEC commons that will highlight the hospital’s Green Team efforts, Practice Greenhealth awards, and information on their local food cooperative that now allows three regional hospitals to buy locally produced and processed food. April 22—The hospital’s cafeteria will feature healthy meal choices

of locally grown and processed food and a complimentary “Dirt Cake”

dessert featuring Oreo crust, chocolate pudding and gummy worms.

Earth Day Celebration, Month-long energy conservation and awareness campaign April 2010- Our month-long "Focusing Our Energy on Patient Care" campaign taking place across the system. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation and innovation to our environment and our community. During the campaign, we will offer learning opportunities, a children's art contest, webcasts, and an employee recognition program called "Be an Energy Star" in addition to planned Earth Day events. April 19-23 Our plans for Earth Week include a presentation on Green-Scaping -sustainable gardening, wise plant selection, composting, rain gardens and rain barrels. Our green team is posting a display in our cafeteria showcasing the green efforts of various departments within the hospital, plus posting the ideas received from employees during a green 'idea drive' we had last fall. We will randomly draw an idea from those submitted and give away an 8' maple tree to the employee who submitted the idea. We will be holding two mercury thermometer collections, exchanging digital for mercury versions. Earth Week wraps up with an employee electronics clean sweep sponsored by the hospital, working with our electronics recycling vendor, to help employees safely and securely dispose/recycle their old electronics.

Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, MD

The Green Team is sponsoring the following Earth Day events, There will be displays, giveaways, prizes and the chance to win a bird house. Employees may bring personal and other documents to the ground floor loading dock to be shredded free of charge. The President and CEO of Holy Cross Hospital will present the hospital's Eco Leadership Award and discuss how Holy Cross Hospital is going green The hospital will also installof a birdhouse in the meditation garden.

Baystate Health MA

Baystate Health will provide staff with an annual report on what areas throughout the hospital have done in 2009 to help reduce our carbon footprint. Along with that we are reporting to staff the green building practices we are taking while building a new state of the art facility for our hospital (which should be in operation by 2012). There is also a green

pledge we are asking staff to participate in. Boston Medical Center Boston, MA

April 22 There will be a celebration of local dairy farms with representatives from Garelick Farms, Cabot Cheese, Grafton Village Cheese, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Ben & Jerry’s, Stoneyfield Farms, and Newman’s Own, giving out free tasting samples Our guest speaker is Scott Soares, Massachusetts Commissioner of Agriculture and Mark Duffy, local dairy farmer. BMC is the first hospital in New England to join the Keep Local Farms effort. At BMC, 10 cents from every single-serve (bottle) purchase of milk will be donated to Keep Local Farms. The money, in turn, will be divided among the 2,000 dairy farms in New England. All of our hospital departments will be displaying their green efforts such as Food and Nutrition, Environmental services, Facilities, Transportation, and Purchasing. Farmer Dave from Dracut will also be on site promoting his Farmers Market and CSA that occurs at the hospital from June to October.
