The Phalaborwa SPCA is launching their Kennel Sponsorship programme.

Much needed funds will be generated through this programme. Individual and Corporate Sponsorships are available.

When sponsoring a kennel, the company or individual’s name will be displayed at the kennel and it is up to the sponsor to change or add anything to the kennel e.g. paint it, add new bedding, toys, bowls etc. They are then welcome to visit and inspect their kennel at any time and spend some time with the animals.

The Phalaborwa SPCA is almost 50 years old and has acted with the municipality as the municipal pound with a legal binding contract in place since 1985.

However, despite some legal action and negotiations no funding has been received from the Municipality for the past 7 years.

The SPCA also receives no other government funding and we therefore rely solely on the generosity and kindness of local sponsorships and the community.

On average they feed over 80 animals a month, provide a 24 hour service to rescue and fetch injured animals, provide medical care to rescued and stray animals, deal with countless complaints and reports of animal neglect and ensure the safe re-homing of many animals.

Corporate Sponsors are R500 per month and Individual Sponsors are R250 per month.

What will you receive for your sponsorship ?

Your kennel will display your name or company’s name and logo or a memorial message.Your name will be added to their sponsor list on Facebook and Global Media TV screens.

The donation is tax deductible and a receipt will be provided.

The Phalaborwa SPCA is a registered BBBEE certifi ed charity. Please email us on: [email protected] for the application forms or contact our offi ce: 015-781 5214/082 494 2147.

Kennel programme for SPCA More than 200 community members

consisting of local business people and artists held a meeting at Kasi Junction in Namakgale to discuss the Marula Festival artist line up on Sunday.

The members of community threatened to boycott the 10th Annual Marula Festival, the union representing artists and business people said the aim of their meeting was to challenge the musician’s line up, amongst other things by the Limpopo Economic Development of Environment and Tourism (LEDET) in partnership with Ba- Phalaborwa Municipality and Limpopo Tourism Agency.

According to reports LEDET has initially failed to include local musicians in the upcoming Marula Festival which is expected to kick-start on February 21 at Impala Park Stadium.

LEDET spokesperson, Buckles Napo when speaking with Phalaborwa Herald said they have linked the artists with the local organizer, Moses Ngobeni. ‘The local artists will perform before the actual festival starts because there will be big names giving performances during the festival,’ said Napo.

Speaking on behalf of the artists, Welcome Khosa said Phalaborwa has lots of talented artists, some shared stages with national

artists such as DJ Tira, Fisherman, DJ Cleo to name a few. ‘We are shocked and saddened not to see any of our locals on the line up,’ said Khosa.

He further said that after the organizers of the festival heard about their meeting they then sent a message on the Marula Festival facebook page that ten artists will be chosen and squeezed into the lineup after a workshop on Thursday. ‘We can’t allow people coming from other areas to take food from our mouth in our own town. We want the Marula Festival administration to go back to Ba Phalaborwa Municipality, because for now it does not benefi t us in anyway, most of the service providers are not local residents,’ added Khosa.

Some of the artists said this industry is diffi cult and challenging, they need to be given a chance to show their talent by using their home ground.

Limpopo Tourism Agency Manager: Corporate Communications and Public Relation, Mike Tauatsoala said they will never satisfy everyone and cannot have 50 artists performing in one festival. ‘We always have one or two local artist every year during the festival and now we will have ten artists performing in the youth and jazz festival,’ said Tauatsoala.

THUMBS DOWN: Local ar sts and business people want to boyco the 10th Marula Fes val because they are not part of the line up.

They want more local artists

Residents of Ba Phalaborwa had an opportunity to raise their service delivery concerns when Ba Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, Anna Sono visited Maseke Young Movers Sports Ground during the mayoral Imbizo on Thursday.

The Imbizo is held to highlight challenges, future opportunities and strategies to improve public confi dence and government commitment.

A lot of issues were raised, including damaged streets, unemployment, the water supply, street lights, sports grounds and RDP houses.

Sono gave a report that refl ects the municipal performance for the second quarter of the 2014/15 fi nancial year. She said that the municipality intends on increasing its waste collection in the villages, 50 foundations for energy high mast lights were erected in Ba Phalaborwa area, Selwane, Patamedi and Tambo street paving

have been completed and Mashishimale sports ground is at construction phase.

‘The municipality created 407 jobs in the second quarter through the implementation of capital projects (EPWP) and 118 SMME’s were supported through the municipal supply chain management system,’ said Sono.

She further said that the construction of storm water culverts at Maseke Ward 10, Makhushane Ward 2 and Kanana were not completed due to lack of fi nance.

Most community members, like Mavarivari from Makhushane Village, complained about the high rate of unemployed people and shortage of water, which is hitting most parts of the rural areas in Ba Phalaborwa. ‘There will be a new mall opening and they already hired people from other towns, where are we going to work if we can’t get jobs in our own town. Most people don’t have water to drink, cook or to wash their clothes. We have been

reporting this matter to the municipal offi ces but nothing has happened. We are tired of empty promises. What we want is water, so that we can survive,’ he said.

Another resident complained about her bad living condition and the fact that she has registered for an RDP house for the past ten years, but has never received it.

‘The offi cials who administrate the issuing of RDP houses often give the houses to their relatives and forget about poor people,’ said the resident.

Eddie Rihlapfi from Prieska Village pleaded with Sono to employ local contractors and local people for any projects done in their area.

Another resident complained about shops owned by foreign people who take their money but don’t pay VAT.

Responding to the community’s concerns with regard to employment, councillor Ishmael Mpenyana, said that they coordinate

with other departments before employing people and they do what will increase the economy of the country.

On the issue of RDP house allocation, Sono said that she will look into it and other issues still that need investigations. ‘We advise residents to pay their municipal services,’ said Sono.

During the Imbizo David Ramalepe, the Electoral Project Coordinator at IEC encouraged residents to vote in the upcoming local elections. ‘If you are 16 years you can register to vote but will only vote when you turn 18 years. ‘You need to have a smart card or ID book when you register to vote,’ said Ramalepe.

He also said that if a group of people want to register, they can call the offi ce and the IEC representatives will go to them. Representatives from Home Affairs, Eskom and Iemas were also present and rendered some of their services.

Park authorities confi rmed that scientifi c studies were being carried out on how best to resolve monkey attacks on humans, with the euthanasia of aggressive animals being touted as the best solution.

“There are normally only one or two problem animals in a group, so we are investigating the possibility of capturing these monkeys in cages and euthanising them,” said Kruger media specialist Isaac Phaahla this week.

In the most recent incident, a German tourist was bitten by a vervet monkey at the Tshokwane Picnic Site between the Skukuza and Satara camps in the Kruger at the end of January.

Kruger visitor Jan van Es witnessed the January monkey attack.

“While I was there, the tourist was bitten by a monkey on his waist and was bleeding quite badly. The tour guide told me that this was the second time in a few weeks that one of her guests had been bitten,” said Van Es.

Phaahla confi rmed the incident and said that monkeys were a huge problem in public areas throughout the park, stealing food from tables and out of tourists’ hands.

“It is an ongoing problem and stems from the fact that people feed the monkeys, even though the Kruger makes it very clear that feeding of animals is prohibited. The monkeys become accustomed to getting food and when they don’t they become aggressive. The most important thing however is to stop getting the public to feed these animals,” said Phaahla this week
