Early History of the Summerville Church of ChristThe Summerville Church of Christ is a light not only in the

community but also in the far reaches of the world On Friday

March 25 1967 a small group of Christians from the area met at the home of Roy and Ada Hartmann to formulate plans for the

establishment of the Summerville congregation

As a result of the enthusiasm that was generated the congregation met for the first time four months early on March 3 1968 They met in a small rented facility on Crestview Drive Fifty-

eight people were in attendance and the contribution was $23403 Brother Don Stidham preached the first sermon Of the families

attending that first service five still worship with the congregation ndash

Roy and Ada Hartmann Jo Gowdy Dale and Jackie Cook Wayne and Irma Altman and their sons Ronald and Mark

moved to Summerville on July 1 1968 to begin their ministry with

the new congregation In the beginning Wayne primarily supported his family by teaching in the local school district During the early

years nine different congregations from as far away as Texas

provided financial support The congregation became fully self-supporting in 1979

BELONG We are BAPTIZED in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 238)

We are to EXALT Christ in everything we do (Ephesians 28-10)We need to learn to LOVE others the way God loves us (Galatians 513-15)We are to be ONE in unity and Spirit (Ephesians 41-6)

Serving in the name of Jesus is REWARDING in so many ways Jesus teaches us that one of the best ways to have VICTORY over evil is to serve others to the glory of GodJesus is our great EXAMPLE of serving and as we mature we are to be an EXAMPLE of serving to others

Jesus tells us that the HARVEST is plenty but the problem is that there are not enough laborers (those sharing the gospel)Paul declares that we are AMBASSADORS of Christ sharing the message of reconciliation

When a sinner is saved we REJOICE along with the angels in heavenWe share the Good News of Jesus with others so that they may know they have ETERNAL LIFE

38 Peter replied ldquoRepent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offmdashfor all whom the Lord our God will callrdquo

40 With many other words he warned them and he pleaded with them ldquoSave yourselves from this corrupt generationrdquo 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized and about three thousand were added to their number that day

42 They devoted themselves to the apostlesrsquo teaching and to fellowship to the breaking of bread and to prayer
