    Information on Emily Bronte:

Emily Bronte was born in 1818 to Patrick and Maria Bronte. She had five other siblings:

Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Emily, and Ann. Patrick, the son of an Irish peasant farmer, was

educated at Cambridge, and became an ordained minister. He was her Calvinistic influence. He

also wrote and published many books, making it common to his children, who all wrote books

too. Emilys mother was from a well-off family. She died from tuberculosis one year after the

family moved from Hayworth. Her sister came to help care for the children. Emily was sent to a

private school to be educated, but could not stand the restricted routine, so she returned home.

Maria and Elizabeth both died of tuberculosis. Emily loved animals and was a very solitaire and

isolated person. She loved the mores of Hayworth, and wrote many of her stories based on them.

The three girls published their stories under pen names. Emilys Wuthering Heights was

published in 1847, under the pen name Ellis. Emily died on December 19, 1848 because of her

stubbornness in refusing to accept any treatment for her illness.

    Characteristics of the genre:

Victorian literature was produced by many of the greats of novelists, such as Charles Dickens

    and Thomas Hardy.

They were primarily concerned with people in society, and their relationships with each other,

their social classes and their occupations. They were more concerned with peoples relationships

with each other, rather than their relation to God.

The authors typically wrote about contemporary aspects of life; a representation of nineteenth

century everyday life. The characters in the stories were people acting as opposed to peoplerecollecting or reflecting.

They wrote about a sense of responsibility.
