We’re getting ready to close out the fall in a big way. The 2010 Fowl Fest is upon us. For those new to Troop One, the Fowl Fest is our ONLY fundraiser during the year. Scouts are required to sell sponsorships. 10% of these sales go towards their high adventure accounts. We want to go above and beyond this year and sell more than ever. As we all know Troop 1 offers a ton of great opportunities for our Scouts throughout the year and the Fowl Fest success is crucial to keep these activities going. We will be discussing the details during all the coming meetings. I encourage all the parents to lend a hand too. I would like for everyone to keep this event in your mind and start thinking about possi- ble sponsors. I’d like to personally congratulate John Blackman on attaining his rank of Eagle! Also, congratulations to our new senior patrol leader, Charles Mercer and three assistant pa- trol leaders: Seth Hilderbran, JC Price, and Will Coker. We’re coming off a great rock climbing trip a few weeks ago at Crowder’s Mountain. This was an activity not many of us parents were ever exposed to growing up and just another great example of the once in a lifetime experiences Troop 1 brings to its scouts. We will be doing some backpacking this month at Graveyard Fields in Pisgah. Since we had a little setback at Congaree, this will be the first time the second years will be back- packing. We elected patrol leaders at October 27th meeting and I was pleased to see a lot of you, who have never lead, step up and take on positions of responsibility. To those who have not done this yet, please think about this over the coming months and make the effort to get one of these positions. Leading is natural to all of you and the Scout Oath and Law lay out what needs to be done to be successful leaders. Let’s get ready for a great finish to the fall and a monumental 2009 Fowl Fest! We’re getting ready to close out the fall in a big way. The 2010 Fowl Fest is upon us. For

those new to Troop One, the Fowl Fest is our ONLY fundraiser during the year. Scouts

are required to sell sponsorships. 10% of these sales go towards their high adventure

accounts. We want to go above and beyond this year and sell more than ever. As we all

know Troop 1 offers a ton of great opportunities for our Scouts throughout the year and

the Fowl Fest success is crucial to keep these activities going. We will be discussing the

details during all the coming meetings. I encourage all the parents to lend a hand too. I

would like for everyone to keep this event in your mind and start thinking about possi-

ble sponsors.

I’d like to personally congratulate John Blackman on attaining his rank of Eagle! Also,

congratulations to our new senior patrol leader, Charles Mercer and three assistant pa-

trol leaders: Seth Hilderbran, JC Price, and Will Coker.

We’re coming off a great rock climbing trip a few weeks ago at Crowder’s Mountain.

This was an activity not many of us parents were ever exposed to growing up and just

another great example of the once in a lifetime experiences Troop 1 brings to its scouts.

We will be doing some backpacking this month at Graveyard Fields in Pisgah. Since we

had a little setback at Congaree, this will be the first time the second years will be back-

packing.

We elected patrol leaders at October 27th meeting and I was pleased to see a lot of you,

who have never lead, step up and take on positions of responsibility. To those who have

not done this yet, please think about this over the coming months and make the effort to

get one of these positions. Leading is natural to all of you and the Scout Oath and Law

lay out what needs to be done to be successful leaders.

Let’s get ready for a great finish to the fall and a monumental 2009 Fowl Fest!

SCOUTMASTER NOTES

What a great outdoor season we have had so far! We started with

white water rafting on the Nantahala. Next, we had a blast on our

trip to Lake Summit. Mr. Gage is quite the host! Lastly, we were

able to put all of our seemingly boundless energy to good use on our

rock climbing trip. These trips have also been a great way to earn

some extra merit badges. On a special note, I have also been

impressed at how the first year scouts have stepped up and mixed right

in there with the rest of the troop. Good job!

Most recently, I was very proud of every scout who attended the rock

climbing weekend and also to see them accomplish what they did. Every

scout on the trip did their very best to literally climb and rappel

this 90 degree (at best) mountain face in front of them. This feat

was not for the faint of heart. We had some who started off a climb

thinking that they could only make it part of the way only to later

realize that, with some positive peer pressure, they could and would

actually make it all the way to the top. We should also thank

Kimberly Sanchez for getting us all fully primed and ready for the

real deal.

However, we are not finished. Next on the agenda is our mountain

backpacking trip, which is scheduled for November 13-15. This will be

a great opportunity take in some more great scenery and to find out

how to really enjoy the outdoors. We will have a chance to actually

use some of our cool outdoor toys.

After a little break get ready for some more adventure in 2010. Keep

an eye out for details of the ski trip in early December and remember

to sell those BBQ tickets this month so that mom and dad will be much

happier when it comes time to actually pay for the ski trip! We will be

going to Beech Mountain on January 22-24. After that trip get ready

for Caving in February, Backpacking in March, and still other spring

trips.

Important Fowl Fest Facts The 19th Annual Troop 1 BBQ Fowl Fest will take place on Saturday,

November 21. Scouts are responsible for ALL tickets issued to them-DO NOT

LOSE THEM! The Fowl Fest is our only fundraiser. It is very important for

Scouts to make selling tickets a priority. Chickens will again be seasoned by a

tasty rub. Sauce will be served on the side along with baked beans, cole slaw, a

roll, and a delicious cookie.

This year, tickets will be distributed and money collected by one adult only.

This will avoid questions about how many tickets a scout has been given or has

sold. Scouts earn $3 per ticket for the first 25 tickets sold, $4 per ticket there

after.

All Scouts must attend and bring a parent to help during their shift on

Saturday, November 21. The troop will be split into 3 shifts. The first shift will

be from 4:30am –9:30 am. The second shift will be from 6:30-11:30am, and the

third shift will be from 9:30 am –2:30p,. If you have a MAJOR conflict on

Saturday and cannot attend, there will be a mini- shift which will work on

Friday afternoon from 5:00-9:00pm helping with preparations.

Sunday tickets sales at the Advent started October 25th. When selling tickets at

the church, please remember to act maturely and responsibly. There will be a

table stationed outside in front of the Church. If you want to participate, you

may do so from the table only, before and after all three scheduled services.

Ticket sales will be split between Scouts selling from the table. Your Class A

uniform is expected and required during table sales.

Your 2009 BBQ Chairs are: Calhoun Kennedy and Jerry Setzer.
